Writers Can Read Open Mic Night

Empire Books and News at Pullman Square at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, host the Writers Can Read monthly author showcase featuring one of the nation's greatest biographers.

Smith, who has been called "today's foremost biographer of formidable figures in American history," is the John Marshall Professor of Political Science at Marshall University. The author of critically acclaimed biographies on U.S. presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and George W. Bush (his latest book released in July 2016), Smith is also known for his books about America's first chief justice of the Supreme Court, and Marshall's namesake, John Marshall.

Also reading Monday will be Frankfort, Kentucky-based poet and environmentalist Victor Depta. He has published multiple books and has been featured on Garrison Keillor's "The Writer's Almanac."

Anyone attending is invited to share a 10-minute piece of a completed work or a work in progress with the audience during the "open mic" portion of the program following the featured readers' presentations. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.
