Generally exhibition

October 22, 2022 @ 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

Generally walks into the life of an Appalachian food desert — with elements of a home and the grocery store. A combination of written stories by journalist Xena Bunton and artwork by Appalachian creatives share conversations of poverty, food insecurity, traditions, and acceptance in Appalachia.

The immersive exhibition, funded by New Media Advocacy Project’s Appalachia Reframed cohort, promotes sustainable journalism with recycled grocery items to showcase photographs and stories of Appalachians impacted from a food desert. A pop of yellow from a dollar store bag outlines experiences from real stories in the secluded areas of the region.

Suzan Ann Morgan’s “affordable?” hand-dyed quilt is screen printed cotton with embroidery floss that features the five “dollar stores” within 20 minutes of her home. Questioning the ability to afford such hidden yet frequent stops, artist Kelsie Tyson also addresses the comfort of feeding others with “J’eat yet?” fuzzy wall poem. Local potter Meghann Ferguson provides hope with functional fortune cookies that have inspired Appalachians to share what they want people to know about the region.
