SUMMARY:HMA to Present Joyful Spirits: Haitian Art from The Winslow Anderson Collection
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art will present the exhibit titled Joyful Spirits: Haitian Art from The Winslow Anderson Collection from Aug. 16 through Feb. 8\, 2026. The Opening Reception for this exhibit will take place at HMA on Aug. 26\, 2025\, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission to this 4th Tuesday Tour Series event is free.\n\nArtists with work featured in the exhibit include Gabriel Alix\, Montas Antoine\, Rigaud Benoit\, Préfète Duffaut\, and Hector Hyppolite\, among others.\n\nWinslow Anderson was a longtime supporter of the Huntington Museum of Art and the first full-time glass designer at Blenko Glass Company in Milton\, West Virginia.\n\n“Winslow Anderson was moved by the colorful\, joyous\, and expressive nature of Haitian art\, and from 1948 until about 1989\, he made annual trips to the Haitian capital city of Port-au-Prince\,” said HMA Curator John Farley. “In Port-au-Prince\, Winslow developed a lifelong friendship with DeWitt Peters\, who had helped establish Le Centre d’Art\, which is now among the oldest surviving cultural institutions in the Caribbean.”\n\nAnderson amassed an impressive collection of Haitian art that he bequeathed to the Huntington Museum of Art. “Winslow was a discerning collector. During these trips\, he purchased many Haitian artworks\, considering each an inspiration to his own creative spirit. Upon his passing in 2007\, the Museum received a bequest of 160 works of Haitian art and a generous endowment that primarily supports the expansion and conservation of this important Haitian art collection\,” Farley said.\n\nThis exhibit is presented with support from The Isabelle Gwynn and Robert Daine Exhibition Endowment.\n\nThis program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.

SUMMARY:Huntington Museum of Art Docent Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art is offering a free informational Docent Open House on Tuesday\, Sept. 2\, 2025\, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for those who are interested in becoming volunteer art and nature tour guides. Light refreshments will be served.\n\n“Docents are volunteers who share their appreciation for art and nature with visitors of all ages at the Huntington Museum of Art\, which has a nature trail system on its 52 acres\,” said HMA Director of Education Cindy Dearborn. “If giving tours of our exhibits or nature trails sounds like something that appeals to you\, then come to Docent Open House and learn more about being a volunteer docent. No previous experience in giving tours is necessary and all docents are thoroughly trained and supported by HMA staff members.”\n\nDocents gather on Monday mornings at the Huntington Museum of Art during the fall and spring for informal art training sessions with the staff members of HMA’s Education Department. “The Huntington Museum of Art is able to provide the number of tours that we do because of our docents\,” Dearborn said. “Many of our volunteers have formed lasting friendships as part of our docent program. Being part of our docent program is very rewarding when you see students and adults enjoying their visits to the Huntington Museum of Art.”\n\nFor questions about the docent program or other education programs at HMA\, call Dearborn at (304) 529-2701 or send her an email at cdearborn@hmoa.org.

SUMMARY:Found and Fabricated Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University’s School of Art & Design proudly presents Found and Fabricated\, a two-person exhibition by Asha Cabaca and Molly Davis. The exhibition brings together practices that explore transformation\, utility\, and material relationships. Cabaca’s sculptural forms contrast found natural elements with fabricated steel structures that mimic and subvert natural movement. Davis’s installations and prints elevate overlooked industrial and domestic objects\, emphasizing their physical qualities and material histories. Together\, their works create a dialogue between labor and play\, permanence and impermanence\, and the space between the organized and the constructed.

SUMMARY:Darkness Shall Cover Me by Katherine Akey Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University’s School of Art & Design proudly presents Darkness Shall Cover Me\, a solo exhibition by San Francisco-based artist Katherine Akey. The exhibition explores the human dimensions of strategic bombing in World War I through cyanotype\, quilted fiber works\, and paper sculptures informed by archaeological methods. Drawing from archival materials and personal reflections\, Akey examines how memory and material intersect. With historically resonant media and a subdued palette\, the exhibition invites reflection on the lived experiences of early bomber pilots and the lasting impact of aerial warfare.

SUMMARY:HACkS Potluck and Film Screening: Gunda
DESCRIPTION:Join HACkS (Huntington Arts Collective and Studios) for another free vegan potluck featuring a screening of the 2020 film Gunda by Victor Kossakowsky. Come early to grab a plate and stay for the movie at 5:45pm! \n“Experiential cinema in its purest form\, GUNDA chronicles the unfiltered lives of a mother pig\, a flock of chickens\, and a herd of cows with masterful intimacy. Using stark\, transcendent black and white cinematography and the farm’s ambient soundtrack\, Master director Victor Kossakowsky invites the audience to slow down and experience life as his subjects do\, taking in their world with a magical patience and an other worldly perspective. GUNDA asks us to meditate on the mystery of animal consciousness\, and reckon with the role humanity plays in it.”
