SUMMARY:Ashley's Fiction Book Club at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:This month’s title: Let’s Call Her Barbie by Renee Rosen \nWhen Ruth Handler walks into the boardroom of the toy company she co-founded and pitches her idea for a doll unlike any other\, she knows what she’s setting in motion. It might just take the world a moment to catch up. \nIn 1956\, the only dolls on the market for little girls let them pretend to be mothers. Ruth’s vision for a doll shaped like a grown woman and outfitted in an enviable wardrobe will let them dream they can be anything. \nAs Ruth assembles her team of creative rebels—head engineer Jack Ryan who hides his deepest secrets behind his genius and designers Charlotte Johnson and Stevie Klein\, whose hopes and dreams rest on the success of Barbie’s fashion—she knows they’re working against a ticking clock to get this wild idea off the ground. \nIn the decades to come—through soaring heights and devastating personal lows\, public scandals and private tensions— each of them will have to decide how tightly to hold on to their creation. Because Barbie has never been just a doll—she’s a legacy.

SUMMARY:Amy's Romance Book Club at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:This month: Axes and O’s by Kayla Grosse \nAfter rage-quitting his soul-sucking job\, Nathan Clark wants nothing more than a relaxing trip to the mountain town of Starlight Haven. But fate has other plans\, and a snowstorm leaves him stranded and fighting for his life. Only\, he’s not alone … \nWhen he wakes in a nearby cabin\, Nathan discovers he’s been rescued by two married\, tattooed loggers who look like they’ve stepped straight out of a flannel fever dream. Fox is a towering man made of rough edges while Morgan is all soft curves with a bite of sass. And they’re eyeing him like he’s the perfect tree to climb. \nWith just one step into the unknown\, Nathan’s about to learn that some people are meant to be straitlaced … and others are meant to be chased down and made to beg for more.

SUMMARY:Eden Crowe Author Event at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:Eden Crowe\, aka The Moth Ma’am\, likes to write wild and wonderful romance about cozy monsters with carnal urges. As a native Appalachian\, she enjoys writing strong characters who find pride in who they are and who they love. Eden believes that there’s no greater romance than a good book\, a strong cup of coffee\, and maybe a cryptid or two for company. Photos of Eden are never quite in focus\, but she invites you to live\, laugh\, and lurk with her on her various corners of the creepy\, crawly web.\n\nMingling with Mothman Book Description:\nThere are a million reasons why Mayor Clay Carlile should never fall for his gorgeous and curvy new social media intern\, but the biggest reason of all might just be her father. In nearly twenty years of political tenure\, he’s been Clay’s only opponent\, and his distaste for all of the monsters who call Mistwood\, WV\, home is more than well known. Not to mention\, a scathing letter he sent to the tabloids trying to out Clay as the state’s most notorious cryptid has an uncomfortable amount of eyes focusing on this mothy mayoral candidate just in time for election season. But how is Clay supposed to resist a woman who shines so bright?\nAva Pratt is nothing like the man who raised her\, and she’s lived her life abroad proving just that. Despite it all\, she can’t help but believe there’s still some good left in her father and is determined to help him see reason. She hasn’t been back to Mistwood in two decades\, but when a job posting from her hometown slides into her inbox\, it seems like the perfect political strategy to take the temporary office position playing intern to her father’s biggest enemy\, if only to help them both understand one another better. But the last thing Ava expects is to find herself falling for her new boss.\nA work trip goes awry when a sudden snow storm leaves the pair stranded at a no-tell motel. This single-bed-situation seems prime for media scandal\, but when Clay reveals more than just his true form\, the two must face the forbidden nature of their budding romance and decide whether it’s best to stay hidden\, waiting in the wings\, or find a way to face the public – and Ava’s father. Can the pair sort through all the legends and lore to learn that seeing is believing? And will their love find a way to show others the light?

SUMMARY:Julie Flippin at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:Divinely Seasoned is a luminous and deeply honest book for women who have ever wondered if aging might make them invisible. Julie Flippin gently turns that cultural myth on its head and reminds us that our aging is not a diminishing but a ripening. Her writing is wise\, poetic and beautifully vulnerable through stories of loss\, healing\, courage and joy. The book feels like time spent with a trusted friend who offers truth and warmth and grace.

SUMMARY:Fight Book Club at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:Nowhere Burning by Catriona Ward \nA refuge for lost children may also be their prison. \nIn the middle of the night\, Riley pulls her younger brother Oliver out of bed\, and the two run away from home. Riley is intent on joining a group of teenagers squatting in the abandoned ruins of an infamous movie star’s ranch\, Nowhere. For actor Leaf Winham\, Nowhere was a place to hide from his fame\, and to hide his crimes―until a fire ravaged his home and exposed him as a murderer. \nIt is rumored that the ranch nestled in the peaks of the Rocky Mountains is now home to group of feral children\, a place where adults cannot enter\, and Riley hopes to find a new family there. But the Nowhere Kids are fierce in defending their turf and their clan\, and Riley quickly realizes that while she and Oliver may have left the devil they knew\, this group is a new type of diabolical. \nFor something dark lives in the burned shell of Nowhere\, something which asks a terrible price for sanctuary… \n

SUMMARY:Dude Book Club at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams \nIt’s an ordinary Thursday morning for Arthur Dent . . . until his house gets demolished. The Earth follows shortly after to make way for a new hyperspace express route\, and Arthur’s best friend has just announced that he’s an alien. \nAfter that\, things get much\, much worse. \nWith just a towel\, a small yellow fish\, and a book\, Arthur has to navigate through a very hostile universe in the company of a gang of unreliable aliens. Luckily the fish is quite good at languages. And the book is The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy . . . which helpfully has the words DON’T PANIC inscribed in large\, friendly letters on its cover. \nDouglas Adams’s mega-selling pop-culture classic sends logic into orbit\, plays havoc with both time and physics\, offers up pithy commentary on such things as ballpoint pens\, potted plants\, and digital watches . . . and\, most important\, reveals the ultimate answer to life\, the universe\, and everything. \nNow\, if you could only figure out the question. . . . \n

SUMMARY:Ashley's Book Club at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:People of Means by Nancy Johnson \nIn the fall of 1959\, Freda Gilroy arrives on the campus of Fisk University full of hope\, carrying a suitcase and the voice of her father telling her she’s part of a family legacy of Black excellence. Soon\, the ugliness of the Jim Crow South intrudes\, and Freda\, reluctant to get involved\, is torn between a soon-to-be doctor and an audacious young activist. Freda must decide how much she’s willing to risk in the name of justice. \nIn 1992 Chicago\, Freda’s daughter\, Tulip\, is an ambitious PR professional on track for an exciting career\, if workplace politics and racial microaggressions don’t get in her way. But with the ruling in the Rodney King trial weighing heavily on her\, Tulip feels called to action and must choose\, just like her mother had three decades prior\, what her role will be in the story of America’s quest for equality. \nInsightful\, evocative\, and richly imagined with historical details\, People of Means is an emotional tour de force about the lasting legacy of family bonds and the far-reaching ways the past shapes our present.

SUMMARY:Amy's Romance Book Club at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:The Kiss Countdown by Etta Easton \nRisk-averse event planner Amerie Price is jobless\, newly single\, and about to lose her apartment. With no choice but to gamble on her shaky start-up\, the last thing she needed was to run into her smug ex and his new\, less complicated girlfriend at Amerie’s favorite coffee shop. Panicked\, she pretends to be dating the annoyingly sexy man she met by spilling Americano all over his abs. He plays along—for a price. \nHalf the single men in Houston claim to be astronauts\, but Vincent Rogers turns out to be the real deal. What started as a one-off lie morphs into a plan: for the three months leading up to his mission\, Amerie will play Vincent’s doting partner in front of his loving but overly invested family. In exchange\, she gets a rent-free room in his house and can put every penny toward her struggling business. \nWhat Amerie doesn’t plan for is Vincent’s gravitational pull. While her mind tells her a future with this astronaut is too unpredictable\, her heart says he’s exactly what she needs. As their time together counts down\, Amerie must decide if she’ll settle for the safe life—or shoot for the stars. \n

SUMMARY:Fright Book Club at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:Shesheshen is a shapeshifter\, who happily resides as an amorphous lump at the bottom of a ruined manor. When her rest is interrupted by impolite monster hunters\, she constructs a body from the remains of past meals: a metal chain for a backbone\, borrowed bones for limbs\, and a bear trap as an extra mouth. \nBadly hurt by the hunters\, Shesheshen’s nursed back to health by Homily\, a warm-hearted human. Homily is kind and would make a great co-parent: an ideal place to lay Shesheshen’s eggs so their young can devour Homily from the inside out. But as they grow close\, Shesheshen realizes that eating her girlfriend isn’t an option. \nJust as Shesheshen’s about to confess her identity\, Homily reveals something else: she’s hunting a shapeshifting monster that supposedly cursed her family. Has Shesheshen seen it anywhere? \nShesheshen didn’t curse anyone\, so now she has to figure out why Homily’s twisted family thinks she did. As Shesheshen’s hunt for the monster becomes increasingly deadly\, the bigger challenge remains: learning how to build a life with\, rather than in\, the woman she loves.

SUMMARY:Dude Book Club - The Princess Bride
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who lived through the 1980s may find it impossible—inconceivable\, even—to equate The Princess Bride with anything other than the sweet\, celluloid romance of Westley and Buttercup\, but the film is only a fraction of the ingenious storytelling you’ll find in these pages. Rich in character and satire\, the novel is set in 1941 and framed cleverly as an “abridged” retelling of a centuries-old tale set in the fabled country of Florin that’s home to “Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passions

SUMMARY:Fright Club at Booktenders: Snake-Eater
DESCRIPTION:From New York Times bestselling and Hugo Award–winning author T. Kingfisher comes an enthralling contemporary fantasy seeped in horror about a woman trying to escape her past by moving to the remote US desert—only to find herself beholden to the wrath of a vengeful god. \nWith only a few dollars to her name and her beloved dog Copper by her side\, Selena flees her past in the city to claim her late aunt’s house in the desert town of Quartz Creek. The scorpions and spiders are better than what she left behind. \nBecause in Quartz Creek\, there’s a strange beauty to everything\, from the landscape to new friends\, and more blue sky than Selena’s ever seen. But something lurks beneath the surface. Like the desert gods and spirits lingering outside Selena’s house at night\, keeping watch. Mostly benevolent\, says her neighbor Grandma Billy. That doesn’t ease the prickly sense that one of them watches too closely and wants something from Selena she can’t begin to imagine. And when Selena’s search for answers leads her to journal entries that her aunt left behind\, she discovers a sinister truth about her new home: It’s the haunting grounds of an ancient god known simply as “Snake-Eater\,” who her late aunt made a promise to that remains unfulfilled. \nSnake-Eater has taken a liking to Selena\, an obsession of sorts that turns sinister. And now that Selena is the new owner of his home\, he’s hell-bent on collecting everything he’s owed.

SUMMARY:Dude Book Club at Booktenders: Warbreaker
DESCRIPTION:After bursting onto the fantasy scene with his acclaimed debut novel\, Elantris\, and following up with his blockbuster Mistborn trilogy\, Brandon Sanderson proves again that he is today’s leading master of what Tolkien called “secondary creation\,” the invention of whole worlds\, complete with magics and myths all their own. \nWarbreaker is the story of two sisters\, who happen to be princesses\, the God King one of them has to marry\, the lesser god who doesn’t like his job\, and the immortal who’s still trying to undo the mistakes he made hundreds of years ago. \nTheir world is one in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren’s capital city and where a power known as BioChromatic magic is based on an essence known as breath that can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people. \nBy using breath and drawing upon the color in everyday objects\, all manner of miracles and mischief can be accomplished. It will take considerable quantities of each to resolve all the challenges facing Vivenna and Siri\, princesses of Idris; Susebron the God King; Lightsong\, reluctant god of bravery\, and mysterious Vasher\, the Warbreaker.

SUMMARY:Ashley's Fiction Book Club at Booktenders: The Fox Wife
DESCRIPTION:Manchuria\, 1908.\nIn the last years of the dying Qing Empire\, a courtesan is found frozen in a doorway. Her death is clouded by rumors of foxes\, which are believed to lure people by transforming themselves into beautiful women and handsome men. Bao\, a detective with an uncanny ability to sniff out the truth\, is hired to uncover the dead woman’s identity. Since childhood\, Bao has been intrigued by the fox gods\, yet they’ve remained tantalizingly out of reach—until\, perhaps\, now. \nMeanwhile\, a family who owns a famous Chinese medicine shop can cure ailments but can’t escape the curse that afflicts them—their eldest sons die before their twenty-fourth birthdays. When a disruptively winsome servant named Snow enters their household\, the family’s luck seems to change—or does it? \nSnow is a creature of many secrets\, but most of all she’s a mother seeking vengeance for her lost child. Hunting a murderer\, she will follow the trail from northern China to Japan\, while Bao follows doggedly behind. Navigating the myths and misconceptions of fox spirits\, both Snow and Bao will encounter old friends and new foes\, even as more deaths occur.

SUMMARY:Dude Book Club: Slaughterhouse Five at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:Slaughterhouse-Five\, an American classic\, is one of the world’s great antiwar books. Centering on the infamous World War II firebombing of Dresden\, the novel is the result of what Kurt Vonnegut described as a twenty-three-year struggle to write a book about what he had witnessed as an American prisoner of war. It combines historical fiction\, science fiction\, autobiography\, and satire in an account of the life of Billy Pilgrim\, a barber’s son turned draftee turned optometrist turned alien abductee. As Vonnegut had\, Billy experiences the destruction of Dresden as a POW. Unlike Vonnegut\, he experiences time travel\, or coming “unstuck in time.”\nAn instant bestseller\, Slaughterhouse-Five made Kurt Vonnegut a cult hero in American literature\, a reputation that only strengthened over time\, despite his being banned and censored by some libraries and schools for content and language. But it was precisely those elements of Vonnegut’s writing—the political edginess\, the genre-bending inventiveness\, the frank violence\, the transgressive wit—that have inspired generations of readers not just to look differently at the world around them but to find the confidence to say something about it.\nFifty years after its initial publication at the height of the Vietnam War\, Vonnegut’s portrayal of political disillusionment\, PTSD\, and postwar anxiety feels as relevant\, darkly humorous\, and profoundly affecting as ever\, an enduring beacon through our own era’s uncertainties
