SUMMARY:Dude Book Club at Booktenders: Warbreaker
DESCRIPTION:After bursting onto the fantasy scene with his acclaimed debut novel\, Elantris\, and following up with his blockbuster Mistborn trilogy\, Brandon Sanderson proves again that he is today’s leading master of what Tolkien called “secondary creation\,” the invention of whole worlds\, complete with magics and myths all their own. \nWarbreaker is the story of two sisters\, who happen to be princesses\, the God King one of them has to marry\, the lesser god who doesn’t like his job\, and the immortal who’s still trying to undo the mistakes he made hundreds of years ago. \nTheir world is one in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren’s capital city and where a power known as BioChromatic magic is based on an essence known as breath that can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people. \nBy using breath and drawing upon the color in everyday objects\, all manner of miracles and mischief can be accomplished. It will take considerable quantities of each to resolve all the challenges facing Vivenna and Siri\, princesses of Idris; Susebron the God King; Lightsong\, reluctant god of bravery\, and mysterious Vasher\, the Warbreaker.

SUMMARY:Fright Club at Booktenders: Snake-Eater
DESCRIPTION:From New York Times bestselling and Hugo Award–winning author T. Kingfisher comes an enthralling contemporary fantasy seeped in horror about a woman trying to escape her past by moving to the remote US desert—only to find herself beholden to the wrath of a vengeful god. \nWith only a few dollars to her name and her beloved dog Copper by her side\, Selena flees her past in the city to claim her late aunt’s house in the desert town of Quartz Creek. The scorpions and spiders are better than what she left behind. \nBecause in Quartz Creek\, there’s a strange beauty to everything\, from the landscape to new friends\, and more blue sky than Selena’s ever seen. But something lurks beneath the surface. Like the desert gods and spirits lingering outside Selena’s house at night\, keeping watch. Mostly benevolent\, says her neighbor Grandma Billy. That doesn’t ease the prickly sense that one of them watches too closely and wants something from Selena she can’t begin to imagine. And when Selena’s search for answers leads her to journal entries that her aunt left behind\, she discovers a sinister truth about her new home: It’s the haunting grounds of an ancient god known simply as “Snake-Eater\,” who her late aunt made a promise to that remains unfulfilled. \nSnake-Eater has taken a liking to Selena\, an obsession of sorts that turns sinister. And now that Selena is the new owner of his home\, he’s hell-bent on collecting everything he’s owed.

SUMMARY:A.E. Stringer Visiting Writers Series - Anna Rollins
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University’s Department of English will continue the A.E. Stringer Visiting Writers Series in February\, with a reading by author Anna Rollins\, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5\, in the Drinko Atrium\, located on the third floor of Drinko Library. The event is free and open to the public. \nRollins is the author of “Famished: On Food\, Sex\, and Growing Up as a Good Girl\,” published in December of 2025. Her debut memoir examines the rhyming scripts of diet culture and purity culture\, both of which direct women to fear their own bodies and appetites. Her writing has appeared in outlets like The New York Times\, Slate\, Electric Literature\, Salon\, Joyland\, and more. She’s also written scholarly articles about composition and writing center studies. \nRollins is also an award-winning instructor who taught English at Marshall University for nearly 15 years. A lifelong Appalachian\, she lives with her husband in West Virginia\, where they’re raising their three small children. \n“I cannot overstate how excited we are to host Anna as our debut spring visiting author\,” said Sara Henning\, assistant professor of English and coordinator of the A.E. Stringer Visiting Writers Series. “She is beyond remarkable: A powerhouse writer\, Marshall alumna and beloved former colleague of the English department. She’s an inspiration\, and we are so proud of her.” \nThe event is sponsored by Marshall University with support from the Department of English.

SUMMARY:Earth & Blood Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:West Edge Factory is so excited to welcome everyone to join us at the Turret Gallery for ceramic artist Josh Perry’s first solo exhibition!\nJosh’s work uses clay\, sculpture\, and installation to explore how people are shaped by the systems around them—such as war\, belief\, disability\, and social expectations. His pieces reflect on harm and healing\, asking how we carry our past experiences and how change becomes possible. The work is grounded\, physical\, and honest\, inviting viewers to slow down and spend time with each object.\nAccessibility and adaptation are central to Perry’s practice\, influencing both how the work is made and how it is experienced. His art considers memory\, trauma\, and resilience without offering easy answers\, instead creating space for reflection and conversation.\nThe opening reception will be held Friday\, February 6 from 6–9 PM\, with the gallery open for viewing throughout the evening.\nThe event will also include a poetry reading from 6–7 PM and live music by Sam Eplin.\nLight refreshments will be provided.\nThis event is free and open to the public\, and all are welcome.
