Stemming from a profound need to create\, “Stratification” highlights DeLuca’s deep engagement with materials\, offering a visual exploration of emotions and the complexities of the human condition. \nIn addition to the exhibit\, there will be an artist talk held on Thursday\, Oct. 24 from 5 to 6 p.m. in VAC 209\, where DeLuca will discuss his creative process. DESCRIPTION:Join the Cabell County Public Library as they host Claire Tryon from the WV Division of Arts\, Culture\, and History. Green Books were guidebooks for African-American travelers\, allowing them to safely navigate their way across a segregated and violent mid-century United States. The history of the Green Book in West Virginia was an integral part of the people and buildings that composed the vibrant African-American community within the state. This presentation also examines these historically significant sites in the present\, particularly\, their alterations and demolitions\, and the ongoing efforts of organizations on a state and local level to combat the loss of these historic regions.

DESCRIPTION:Annual Carter G. Woodson Lecture at Marshall University to be delivered by Burlington 37 descendant Marie E. Redd \nFormer West Virginia State Senator Marie E. Redd will present this year’s Carter G. Woodson Lecture at 4 p.m. Wednesday\, Feb. 19\, in the Shawkey Room of Marshall University’s Memorial Student Center. \nA native of Huntington\, Redd is owner of the Redd Social Security Compensation Office and a descendant of the Burlington 37 – a group of former enslaved people who were freed and relocated to Burlington\, Ohio. Redd’s presentation will focus on the Burlington 37\, who formed the first free-black community west of the Alleghany Mountains in 1849. \nRedd attended the all-black Barnett Elementary School\, formerly located at Hal Greer Boulevard and Eighth Avenue\, Oley Junior High School and Huntington High School. She earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees from Marshall. She has served as a full-time instructor of criminal justice at Marshall. Redd was inducted into the inaugural class of the Marshall University Black Alumni Hall of Fame. \nIn 1998\, Redd became the first African American elected to the West Virginia State Senate and the first female state senator elected from Cabell and Wayne counties. In 2003\, Redd advocated for and received funding for a senior citizens’ center in the Fairfield Community\, which was named the Marie Redd Senior Life Enrichment Center in her honor. West Virginia Living Magazine featured Redd as one of the West Virginia Wonder(ful) Women in 2020\, and she was inducted into the Greater Huntington Hall of Fame in 2022. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the John Deaver Drinko Academy and the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lyceum at Marshall University. \n“We are honored to have Marie Redd serve as the 2025 Carter G. Woodson Lecturer\,” said Dr. Montserrat Miller\, executive director of the Drinko Academy and a history professor. “Redd is a model citizen who has made a range of significant contributions to our community. Her presentation will advance public understanding of the historic importance of the Burlington 37 to this region and to our country.” \n“I tried for years to get Marie as a speaker. It has been difficult because of her schedule\,” said Burnis Morris\, director of the Dr. Carter G. DESCRIPTION:Marshall University’s A.E. Stringer Visiting Writer Series will present a reading with author Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday\, March 26\, in the Drinko Library Atrium\, located on the library’s third floor. The reading is free and open to the public. \nClapsaddle is an enrolled citizen of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and resides in Qualla\, North Carolina. She holds degrees from Yale University and the College of William and Mary. She is author of Even As We Breathe\, a finalist for the Weatherford Award\, named one of NPR’s Best Books of 2020. In 2021\, it was the recipient of the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award. \nHer first novel manuscript\, Going to Water\, is winner of the Morning Star Award for Creative Writing from the Native American Literature Symposium (2012) and a finalist for the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction (2014). \nClapsaddle’s work has appeared in Yes! Magazine\, Lit Hub\, Salvation South\, South Writ Large\, Our State Magazine\, Bon Appétit\, Travel + Leisure Magazine\, and The Atlantic. She has served as executive director of the Cherokee Preservation Foundation and as a teacher at Swain County High School. Clapsaddle is also a former co-editor of the Journal of Cherokee Studies\, and she serves on the Museum of the Cherokee People Board of Directors. She also is president of the Board of Trustees for the North Carolina Writers Network. In 2022\, Clapsaddle established Bird Words LLC\, working as an independent contractor and consultant. She also helped launch Confluence: An Indigenous Writers’ Workshop Series\, to bring indigenous writers to the Qualla Boundary in North Carolina to work with aspiring writers. \n“I am beyond excited for Annette Clapsaddle’s visit\,” said Dr. Sara Henning\, who coordinates the Stringer Visiting Writers Series at Marshall and organized the reading event. “As both a novelist and educator\, Clapsaddle’s work not only occupies a crucial space in the canon of Indigenous Appalachian literature\, but she joins writers such as Louise Erdrich\, N. Scott Momaday\, and Leslie Marmon Silko as a powerful Indigenous voice on the national stage.” \nAll are welcome to the event\, which is presented by Marshall with support from the Department of English\, the College of Liberal Arts and University Libraries.
