SUMMARY:Cat Pleska and Joel Peckham Reading
DESCRIPTION:Come for an evening of creative nonfiction with Cat Pleska and Joel Peckham reading from their new collections\, My Life in Water and Gone the Sun/Any Moonwalker Can Tell you.\n\n“Strap on a life jacket and dive into this often perilous\, at times funny\, always poignant collection bubbling with the language of water. Ever present is the danger of drowning from inattentive caregivers\, from white-water rapids or a bridge collapse into a roiling river. From fluid-filled lungs gasping with croup or pneumonia. But water also brings healing and an understanding that navigating tricky waters\, whether literal or metaphorical\, has made Cat the surest captain of her own life.”\n~Marie Manilla\, author of Patron Saint of Ugly\n\n“In Gone the Sun\, Peckham writes about his loving\, sometimes fraught history with Manitou\, a summer camp he and his father worked at for many years. As his father declines into dementia the middle-aged Peckham—still working summers at the camp between semesters as a college professor—muses upon time\, upon loss\, and the various selves we inhabit as we age. This is a beautiful\, heartbreaking book\, but heartbreaking in the most resonant\, emotionally intelligent\, and illuminating way possible.”\n~Sue William Silverman\, author\, Acetylene Torch Songs: Writing True Stories to Ignite the Soul

SUMMARY:Annual Carter G. Woodson Lecture featuring Marie E. Redd
DESCRIPTION:Annual Carter G. Woodson Lecture at Marshall University to be delivered by Burlington 37 descendant Marie E. Redd \nFormer West Virginia State Senator Marie E. Redd will present this year’s Carter G. Woodson Lecture at 4 p.m. Wednesday\, Feb. 19\, in the Shawkey Room of Marshall University’s Memorial Student Center. \nA native of Huntington\, Redd is owner of the Redd Social Security Compensation Office and a descendant of the Burlington 37 – a group of former enslaved people who were freed and relocated to Burlington\, Ohio. Redd’s presentation will focus on the Burlington 37\, who formed the first free-black community west of the Alleghany Mountains in 1849. \nRedd attended the all-black Barnett Elementary School\, formerly located at Hal Greer Boulevard and Eighth Avenue\, Oley Junior High School and Huntington High School. She earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees from Marshall. She has served as a full-time instructor of criminal justice at Marshall. Redd was inducted into the inaugural class of the Marshall University Black Alumni Hall of Fame. \nIn 1998\, Redd became the first African American elected to the West Virginia State Senate and the first female state senator elected from Cabell and Wayne counties. In 2003\, Redd advocated for and received funding for a senior citizens’ center in the Fairfield Community\, which was named the Marie Redd Senior Life Enrichment Center in her honor. West Virginia Living Magazine featured Redd as one of the West Virginia Wonder(ful) Women in 2020\, and she was inducted into the Greater Huntington Hall of Fame in 2022. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the John Deaver Drinko Academy and the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lyceum at Marshall University. \n“We are honored to have Marie Redd serve as the 2025 Carter G. Woodson Lecturer\,” said Dr. Montserrat Miller\, executive director of the Drinko Academy and a history professor. “Redd is a model citizen who has made a range of significant contributions to our community. Her presentation will advance public understanding of the historic importance of the Burlington 37 to this region and to our country.” \n“I tried for years to get Marie as a speaker. It has been difficult because of her schedule\,” said Burnis Morris\, director of the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lyceum at Marshall and a professor of journalism. “But now it’s going to happen\, and I can’t wait for this event.” \nThe Carter G. Woodson Lecture is one of Marshall’s Black History Month events this February. For more information\, visit https://www.marshall.edu/woodsonlyceum/.

SUMMARY:MU History Lecture - "Vladimir Putin and Russian Memory of WWII"
DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University Department of History will welcome Dr. Karen Petrone\, professor of history and Zantker Professor of Jewish History at the University of Kentucky\, for the 2025 Charles Hill Moffat Lecture. Petrone will present “Vladimir Putin and Russian Memory of the Second World War\,” at 5 p.m. Thursday\, April 10\, in the Shawkey Dining Room of the Memorial Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. \nPetrone’s lecture: \n· Will examine how Russia’s memory of World War II has been sacralized\, mythologized and reimagined as a central pillar of contemporary Russian nationalism. \n· She will explore how Vladimir Putin has leveraged historical narratives of the war to justify Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. \n· And how the war’s legacy continues to shape Russian state legitimacy and patriotism today. \n“Professor Petrone is an excellent resource for understanding how Russia has used historical memory to justify its actions in Ukraine and beyond\,” said Dr. Chris White\, a professor in Marshall’s history department. “Her expertise provides important historical context to those seeking a fuller understanding of the Russo-Ukraine War.” \nPetrone is the author of “Life Has Become More Joyous\, Comrades: Celebrations in the Time of Stalin and The Great War in Russian Memory.”  She is currently completing a book on war memory in Putin’s Russia and serves as co-director of the UK-JHF Holocaust Education Initiative. \n“This promises to be a dynamic and exceptionally relevant presentation\,” said Dr. Greta Rensenbrink\, chair of the history department. \nThe Charles Hill Moffat Fund and the Marshall University Department of History sponsor the lecture. For more information\, contact Rensenbrink at rensenbrink@marshall.edu.
