SUMMARY:MU History Lecture - "Vladimir Putin and Russian Memory of WWII"
DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University Department of History will welcome Dr. Karen Petrone\, professor of history and Zantker Professor of Jewish History at the University of Kentucky\, for the 2025 Charles Hill Moffat Lecture. Petrone will present “Vladimir Putin and Russian Memory of the Second World War\,” at 5 p.m. Thursday\, April 10\, in the Shawkey Dining Room of the Memorial Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. \nPetrone’s lecture: \n· Will examine how Russia’s memory of World War II has been sacralized\, mythologized and reimagined as a central pillar of contemporary Russian nationalism. \n· She will explore how Vladimir Putin has leveraged historical narratives of the war to justify Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. \n· And how the war’s legacy continues to shape Russian state legitimacy and patriotism today. \n“Professor Petrone is an excellent resource for understanding how Russia has used historical memory to justify its actions in Ukraine and beyond\,” said Dr. Chris White\, a professor in Marshall’s history department. “Her expertise provides important historical context to those seeking a fuller understanding of the Russo-Ukraine War.” \nPetrone is the author of “Life Has Become More Joyous\, Comrades: Celebrations in the Time of Stalin and The Great War in Russian Memory.”  She is currently completing a book on war memory in Putin’s Russia and serves as co-director of the UK-JHF Holocaust Education Initiative. \n“This promises to be a dynamic and exceptionally relevant presentation\,” said Dr. Greta Rensenbrink\, chair of the history department. \nThe Charles Hill Moffat Fund and the Marshall University Department of History sponsor the lecture. For more information\, contact Rensenbrink at rensenbrink@marshall.edu.

SUMMARY:Word on the Block #3
DESCRIPTION:The mic is live on the block\, the knowledge is deep\, and the music is original. Word on the Block #3 is back—bringing the community together in an intergenerational\, interdisciplinary celebration of what it means to gather with purpose. \nSet on 8th Avenue between Hal Greer Boulevard and 17th Street\, this electrifying live event blends scholarship\, storytelling\, podcasting\, and music into one unforgettable afternoon. \nLaunched in 2021 with funding from the West Virginia Humanities Council as part of the Biden Administration’s COVID-19 relief efforts\, Word on the Block was born as a healing space to help neighbors reconnect after the isolation of the pandemic. Now\, with national backing from the National Endowment for the Arts’ Arts HERE program\, the vision expands: deeper conversations\, stronger performances\, and a bigger platform for community truth-telling. \nAt its heart\, Word on the Block is about putting the mic where the people are—and this year’s scholar lineup delivers powerful truths. Speakers include: \n\nDr. Phil Carter (Professor)\nCrystal Good (Poet and Publisher)\nSean Hornbuckle (Financial Advisor\, WV Delegate)\nDr. Gregory Breeden\n\nDr. Georgiana Logan\n\nStaysha Quintrell (Midwife)\nJason Tartt (Farmer)\n\nTogether\, these voices will explore farming\, civics\, midwifery\, Black men’s health\, social justice\, human rights\, publishing\, and the evolution of DEI from the civil rights movement to the present. \nComplementing the scholarship is a genre-defying roster of live performers\, including: Gardenn\, NeeNee Incognita\, AC\, Bernard Craighead\, Se7en\, Deano Mission\, Angela Linthicum\, Scantag \nOriginal compositions from these MCs\, R&B vocalists\, and producers will range from urban eclectic to street rap\, with sonic guidance from co-producing partner Duke Johnson of Thyrd World Music. \nWord on the Block #3 is executive produced by All Here Together Productions and the Positive People Association (PPA)—two regional powerhouses in creative collaboration. For four years\, PPA has led youth and family programming at the J.W. Scott Center\, with Word on the Block as one of its signature projects. \n“Word on the Block is my heart\,” says Carmen-Mitzi Sinnott\, internationally acclaimed artist and event co-producer.  “It’s what I know we are when we come together for the greater good. When Duke\, Norman\, and I first built the idea\, their willingness to experiment made it all possible. Now\, here we are—nationally funded and stronger than ever.” \nThe event kicks off with a live recording of The Biz Podcast\, hosted by Leah Brown-Branch and Norman Branch\, who will explore historical and cultural topics with the scholars. But the real magic happens when the audience joins in—Word on the Block doesn’t just perform to the people\, it passes the mic.

DESCRIPTION: WV FILM OFFICE and the WEST VIRGINIA FILMMAKERS GUILD in association with APPALACHIAN FILM FESTIVAL present A Wunderbar Social\n\nWe are coming to Huntington! Our mission is quite simple. We need to build a network of film industry professionals within the state. Productions are eyeing West Virginia and the interest continues to grow. It’s important that we give it our best foot forward\, connect\, and build our network as soon as possible.\nAs part of the 2025 WVFG state meet and greet tour\, we are calling all filmmakers\, storytellers\, and creatives to join us. The WV Film Office and West Virginia Filmmakers Guild are joining with the Appalachian Film Festival to make this gathering a unique opportunity to connect with fellow filmmakers in the area\, exchange ideas\, and build our network.\n\nThis is not just for filmmakers! We are looking for real estate agents to help secure locations\, electricians\, carpenters\, drivers\, and yes\, actors interested in background work. It takes a village to make a film. For those that are curious\, you are more than welcome to attend.\n\nGUEST SPEAKERS\n* David Lavender from the WV Film Office – the latest updates on the WV film industry.\n*Tijah Baumgardner from the Marshall Film Program – for the aspiring filmmakers\, there’s a program available right here in your backyard!\n\nWe hope that all those in the area can stop by and say hello. You Charleston folks aren’t too far away and that goes for the Kentucky peeps as well.\nMake a weekend out of it! The Appalachian Film Festival will be active all day Saturday\, April 26\, at the Foundry Theatre. Catch some of the latest films out of WV and don’t forget to swing by our booth and say hey. Carpe diem. Rain or shine\, there shall be snacks.

SUMMARY:Ellie Schaul Artist Talk: Zeitgeist Houses
DESCRIPTION:An absolute must-see highlight of our Tiny Art Exhibit at West Edge Factory is a collection of three “Zeitgeist Houses” by artist Ellie Schaul.\nThe Zeitgeist House Project began in 1984 with the acquisition of a handcrafted dollhouse at a church yard sale. Ellie invited artists she had collaborated with through the years as Director of The Art Store in Charleston to contribute tiny original works for the house\, and by 2014 the house became a miniature museum. She later added two more houses\, one built from scratch and another as a re-worked dollhouse.\nTogether the three Zeitgeist houses contain nearly one hundred tiny pieces of art.\nEllie Schaul is one of West Virginia’s most enduring artists. We are so pleased to have her work on display in the Turret Gallery at West Edge Factory\, and extremely excited to host her for an artist talk about these unique and breathtaking miniature museums.\nJoin us for an artist talk at 1:00 pm on Saturday\, July 19!\nSee Ellie’s work along with the work of 17 other artists in our Tiny Art Show and enjoy the mini art market taking place in the large room adjacent to the gallery that same day from 11-4.\nThis talk is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Javier Zamora
DESCRIPTION:In his debut memoir\, the New York Times Bestseller\, Solito\, Salvadoran poet Javier Zamora retells his nine-week odyssey across Guatemala\, Mexico\, and the Sonoran Desert before reuniting with his parents in California. \nAccompanied only by strangers and a hired “coyote\,” Zamora left his beloved aunt and grandparents to reunite with his mother and father in the United States. The three-thousand-mile journey\, only expected to last two weeks until he was abandoned in Oaxaca\, stretched into two life-altering months spent among strangers turned guardians as he traveled from El Salvador to Guatemala and then Mexico before arriving in the United States. Narrated by his nine-year-old self\, Zamora’s memoir\, Solito\, provides an intimate account of his near-impossible journey and the unexpected moments of kindness\, love\, and joy scattered across perilous boat trips\, desert treks\, arrests\, and betrayals. \n“The magic of this book lies not only in the beguiling voice of young Javier\, or the harrowing journey and immense bravery of the migrants\, or in the built-in hero’s journey of this narrative. It’s hard to reconcile the fact that this book hasn’t always been with us. How can something so essential and fundamental to the American story not already be part of our canon?” —San Francisco Chronicle. \nConversation moderated by Dr. Avinandan “Avi” Mukherjee\, Dr. Montserrat Miller\, and Tim Irr.

SUMMARY:Alys Smith Symposium on Women Professionals
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University will host the seventh Alys Smith Symposium on Women Professionals at 7 p.m. Wednesday\, Nov. 12\, in the Shawkey Dining Room of the Memorial Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. \nThe symposium will feature a keynote address by Melanie Hall\, president and CEO of Hospice of Huntington. After the keynote\, a panel of local women professionals in the health care field will include a physician\, two registered nurses\, a radiation physicist and a physician assistant. \nHilary Brewster is the director of the Women’s\, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program. \n“I cannot believe we are hosting our seventh symposium already\,” Brewster said. “These events have become informational and networking resources for students and the community alike. I’ve seen internships develop out of casual conversations. Everyone is welcome — students thinking about a career in the medical field\, maybe someone in the community considering a career pivot. Learning from experts is a key component to consider when choosing a professional path.” \nThe Alys Smith Symposium is sponsored by the Women’s\, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program and the Office of the President. It celebrates and highlights the achievements and contributions of women in various professional fields. \n“Health care is a key component of our society\, and these women are contributing to our health and wellness in varied\, important ways\,” Brewster said. “I am especially interested to hear Hall’s keynote address. Hospice might be the closest thing we have to angels on earth.” \nFor more information\, contact Hilary Brewster at brewsterh@marshall.edu.
