SUMMARY:May Day: A Redneck Reclamation at WestEdge
DESCRIPTION:Join us at West Edge Factory on Friday\, May 1st for May Day: A Redneck Reclamation!\nMay Day will feature twelve digital paintings of key figures of the WV Mine Wars by Sassa Wilkes. These works will serve as references for a large-scale community-created mural called SOLIDARITY to be completed throughout 2026.\nCommunity members are welcome to view the works\, participate in painting mural sections on polytab mural fabric\, and enjoy a poetry reading\, an artist talk by Sassa\, and a talk about the history of May Day by Kenzie New Walker\, Executive Director of the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum. The night will include live music by Thomas Jude and Matt Mullins\, as well as a special performance by Huntington’s own community marching band\, Hoot & Holler!\nThis event is free and open to people of all ages. Refreshments will be served. Bring your friends and family out for a beautiful community celebration!\nMore about SOLIDARITY:\nSOLIDARITY is a large-scale\, year-long community mural project in Huntington\, West Virginia that centers the history and legacy of the West Virginia Mine Wars. Through portraiture\, historical imagery\, and community storytelling\, the project educates West Virginians about this pivotal labor movement while inviting participants to re-envision Appalachian identity through solidarity\, resistance\, and collective power.\nThe mural will be painted on polytab mural fabric and permanently installed on a 120-foot wall at the West Edge Factory. Polytab allows sections of the mural to be painted off-site and later adhered to the wall\, making it possible for community members of all ages and skill levels to contribute directly. The project’s goal is to engage 1\,000 community members\, ensuring the mural is a truly collective work rather than a single-artist narrative.\nThe visual content of SOLIDARITY draws from the West Virginia Mine Wars as both historical event and living legacy. Portraits of key figures from the Mine Wars will be woven together with symbolic imagery and contemporary community contributions. The mural reclaims the term “redneck” in its original labor context—miners wearing red bandanas as a sign of unity—and challenges harmful stereotypes about Appalachia by centering dignity\, courage\, and collective action.\nCommunity participation is central to the project. Contributors will be invited not only to paint sections of the mural\, but also to share personal and family stories connected to labor\, mining\, or Appalachian identity. These stories will inform the imagery and themes of the mural\, reinforcing the idea that the Mine Wars are not distant history\, but part of an ongoing Appalachian story.\nA major public activation of the project will take place on May 1\, 2026\, with a special exhibition titled MAY DAY in the Turret Gallery at the West Edge Factory. The event will include an educational talk by Kenzie New-Walker\, Executive Director of the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum\, an exhibition of mural sections in progress\, and an open community paint-in where attendees can contribute directly to the mural. Appalachian music will accompany the event\, and May Day will be celebrated as the original Labor Day.\nOnce installed\, SOLIDARITY will stand as a permanent public artwork and educational landmark in Huntington—honoring the West Virginia Mine Wars\, amplifying community voices\, and affirming Appalachian identity as one rooted in solidarity\, resistance\, and care for one another.

SUMMARY:Sundy Best at The Paramount - Ashland\, KY
DESCRIPTION:Sundy Best was formed by two friends since elementary school\, Nick Jamerson and Kris Bentley\, from Prestonsburg in Eastern Kentucky. Both were athletes in college\, with Jamerson playing football while at University of Pikeville where he studied history\, and Bentley played basketball at Centre College in Danville where he studied English. They formed a duo after college\, and moved to Lexington\, Kentucky in August 2010. Jamerson performed as the lead vocalist and played the guitar\, with Bentley on the cajón drum. Their name referred to the way they pronounce “Sunday best”\, their best clothing worn in church where they began playing music together on Sundays during their senior year in high school. \n“For those of you who may not know\, Sundy Best is a duo out of Prestonsburg\, Kentucky composed of Nicholas Jamerson and Kris Lee Bentley. Between then and 2018\, Sundy Best wrote\, recorded\, and toured in a prolific manner\, releasing three more albums\, a live album\, and several singles following that debut record\, for a total of nearly 100 songs in just over four years. As a result\, they quickly gained a massive following and rose to the top of the regional country scene\, experiencing quite a bit of national success as well. Known for songs like “Painted Blue\,” “Hindman\,” and “I Wanna Go Home\,” the duo found themselves in a position of Appalachian country music royalty and one of America’s national non-mainstream up and comers.”

SUMMARY:Alabama with The Marshall Tucker Band in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Over 50 years ago\, Jeff Cook\, Teddy Gentry and Randy Owen left the cotton farms of Fort Payne\, Alabama to spend the summer playing music in a Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina bar called The Bowery. It took them six long  years of tip jars and word-of-mouth to earn the major label deal they’d been dreaming of. Then\, seemingly no time at all to change the face of country music. ALABAMA\, country music’s first band\, was inducted into the  Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005. The group is known for hit songs including “Mountain Music\,” “Roll On\,” “Dixieland Delight” and “If You’re Gonna Play In Texas (You Gotta Have A Fiddle In The Band).” From humble beginnings picking cotton in the fields\, to international stars\, ALABAMA went on to sell 80 million albums and charted 43 No.1 hits\, becoming the most successful band in the history of country music. In November 2022\, ALABAMA co-founder Jeff Cook passed following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. With his prior encouragement and wishes\, ALABAMA continues touring on a limited basis\, keeping the iconic music they\ncreated alive for the current and future generation of fans. For more information on ALABAMA\, visit thealabamaband.com.
