Tables will feature items related to communication\, entertainment\, toys and games\, daily life\, and finding information before the internet. \nBut Museum Executive Director Raine Klover says the objects themselves are only part of the experience. \n“Children are naturally curious when they encounter something they’ve never seen before\, but the real fun begins when a grownup says\, ‘Oh\, I remember this!’” said Klover. “We want these objects to spark stories. A rotary phone or VHS tape becomes an opportunity for a child to learn something about the grownups in their lives.” \nConversation prompts throughout the Museum will encourage adults to tell children about their own childhoods\, from favorite toys and television shows to how they communicated with friends and researched school projects. DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art is offering a free informational Docent Open House on Tuesday\, Sept. 8\, 2026\, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for those who are interested in becoming volunteer art and nature tour guides. Light refreshments will be served.\n\n“If you think you would like to share your appreciation for art and nature with visitors of all ages to the Huntington Museum of Art\, then Docent Open House is for you\,” said HMA Director of Education Cindy Dearborn. “Docents give tours of our exhibits and nature trails. No previous experience in giving tours is necessary and all docents are thoroughly trained and supported by HMA staff members.”\n\nDocents gather on Monday mornings at the Huntington Museum of Art during the fall and spring for informal art training sessions with the staff members of HMA’s Education Department. “It would not be possible for the Huntington Museum of Art to provide the number of tours that we do without our docents\,” Dearborn said. “Lasting friendships have been formed by many of our volunteer docents. DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art will host an indoor Garden Party on August 25\, 2026\, from 6 to 8 p.m. as part of its 4th Tuesday Tour Series. To add to the fun of the event\, guests are welcome to dress in tea party attire inspired by fashions worn during America’s Gilded Age or London Regency\, Edwardian or Victorian times. Admission is free. \n“In honor of the 30th Anniversary of the C. Fred Edwards Conservatory this year\, we will be hosting our 2nd annual indoor Garden Party\,” said HMA Director of Education Cindy Dearborn\, who plans the 4th Tuesday Tour Series at HMA. “People will have access to the C. Fred Edwards Conservatory of tropical and subtropical plants and can enjoy Garden Party refreshments in the air-conditioned comfort of HMA’s Virginia Van Zandt Great Hall.” \nThe event will include an art activity. Members of HMA’s Docent Corps will be available to discuss selected works from “The Daywood Collection” exhibit\, which continues on view at HMA through Feb. 14\, 2027. \n“The Daywood Collection features some of HMA’s most beloved American and European paintings by such artists as Robert Henri\, Frank Weston Benson\, Frederick Childe Hassam\, and many others\,” Dearborn said. \nThe Garden Party is part of “A Season of Celebrating the C. Fred Edwards Conservatory Presented by Leslie Petteys in Memory of Fannie Christner.” \nThis exhibit is presented with support from The Isabelle Gwynn and Robert Daine Exhibition Endowment. \nThis project is supported with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts\, with approval of the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.

Community organizations will also be on hand to share resources and information for local families. \nThanks to the generous support of Uptown Musik and Fine Arts\, admission to the Huntington Children’s Museum will be free from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, giving families the opportunity to enjoy the museum’s interactive exhibits before\, during\, and after the event. \n“Events like Back-to-School with Daniel Tiger bring together learning\, play\, and community in a way that helps children feel excited and confident about the school year ahead\,” said Raine Klover\, Executive Director of the Huntington Children’s Museum. “We’re grateful to partner with West Virginia Public Broadcasting\, the SMART529 Plan\, and Uptown Musik and Fine Arts to make this experience available free of charge for local families.” \nThe event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Join us at West Edge Factory on Friday\, May 1st for May Day: A Redneck Reclamation!\nMay Day will feature twelve digital paintings of key figures of the WV Mine Wars by Sassa Wilkes. These works will serve as references for a large-scale community-created mural called SOLIDARITY to be completed throughout 2026.\nCommunity members are welcome to view the works\, participate in painting mural sections on polytab mural fabric\, and enjoy a poetry reading\, an artist talk by Sassa\, and a talk about the history of May Day by Kenzie New Walker\, Executive Director of the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum. The night will include live music by Thomas Jude and Matt Mullins\, as well as a special performance by Huntington’s own community marching band\, Hoot & Holler!\nThis event is free and open to people of all ages. Refreshments will be served. Bring your friends and family out for a beautiful community celebration!\nMore about SOLIDARITY:\nSOLIDARITY is a large-scale\, year-long community mural project in Huntington\, West Virginia that centers the history and legacy of the West Virginia Mine Wars. Through portraiture\, historical imagery\, and community storytelling\, the project educates West Virginians about this pivotal labor movement while inviting participants to re-envision Appalachian identity through solidarity\, resistance\, and collective power.\nThe mural will be painted on polytab mural fabric and permanently installed on a 120-foot wall at the West Edge Factory. Polytab allows sections of the mural to be painted off-site and later adhered to the wall\, making it possible for community members of all ages and skill levels to contribute directly. The project’s goal is to engage 1\,000 community members\, ensuring the mural is a truly collective work rather than a single-artist narrative.\nThe visual content of SOLIDARITY draws from the West Virginia Mine Wars as both historical event and living legacy. Portraits of key figures from the Mine Wars will be woven together with symbolic imagery and contemporary community contributions. The mural reclaims the term “redneck” in its original labor context—miners wearing red bandanas as a sign of unity—and challenges harmful stereotypes about Appalachia by centering dignity\, courage\, and collective action.\nCommunity participation is central to the project. Contributors will be invited not only to paint sections of the mural\, but also to share personal and family stories connected to labor\, mining\, or Appalachian identity. These stories will inform the imagery and themes of the mural\, reinforcing the idea that the Mine Wars are not distant history\, but part of an ongoing Appalachian story.\nA major public activation of the project will take place on May 1\, 2026\, with a special exhibition titled MAY DAY in the Turret Gallery at the West Edge Factory. The event will include an educational talk by Kenzie New-Walker\, Executive Director of the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum\, an exhibition of mural sections in progress\, and an open community paint-in where attendees can contribute directly to the mural. Appalachian music will accompany the event\, and May Day will be celebrated as the original Labor Day.\nOnce installed\, SOLIDARITY will stand as a permanent public artwork and educational landmark in Huntington—honoring the West Virginia Mine Wars\, amplifying community voices\, and affirming Appalachian identity as one rooted in solidarity\, resistance\, and care for one another.

DESCRIPTION:Following the success of last year’s inaugural event\, the Huntington Children’s Museum (HCM) is bringing back Dueling Pianos Night on Saturday\, April 11 from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the West Edge Factory\, 1040 Vernon Street. The evening will feature engaging live entertainment\, community connection\, and meaningful impact. Tickets are available at givebutter.com/wvduelingpianos. \nThis year’s event proudly features all homegrown West Virginia talent\, celebrating the creativity and energy of the region. The evening will open with a live performance by The Wax Shadows\, followed by high-energy\, interactive entertainment from Dueling Pianos WV\, where audience members help shape the show by requesting their favorite songs. \nGuests will enjoy an open beer and wine bar along with dinner provided by Ceredo favorite Rocco’s Ristorante. Attendees are encouraged to let their favorite song or musician inspire their attire—whether that means casual\, business casual\, dress to impress\, or fully “dressed to your own tune.” Organizers also recommend bringing cash to request songs and keep the energy high throughout the night. \n“This event is one of our favorites because it brings people together in such a fun and joyful way\,” said Executive Director Raine Klover. “And every moment is helping create opportunities for children in our community to learn and grow through play.” \nProceeds from the evening directly support the Huntington Children’s Museum’s mission to foster intentional play and create inclusive\, child-centered spaces that inspire curiosity\, connection\, and lifelong learning.
