SUMMARY:The Harlan Renaissance Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University will host a presentation by sociologist Dr. William H. Turner\, in recognition of Black History Month and in conjunction with the Great Voices Speaker’s Series and the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Quality Initiative. The presentation will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday\, Jan. 31\, in the Drinko Library Atrium\, located on the third floor. \nTurner\, who is based near Houston\, Texas\, will speak on his book\, “The Harlan Renaissance: Stories of Black Life in Appalachian Coal Towns.”  Among other accolades\, his book was named the winner of the 2023 Kentucky Historical Society Governor’s Award and the Weatherford Award for Non-Fiction. \n“Bill Turner’s intellectual brilliance is clear\,” said Dr. Cicero Fain\, assistant provost of Inclusive Excellence and Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion fellow at Marshall. “In the last 50 years\, this native son of Lynch\, Kentucky\, has done more to research\, chronicle\, and elevate the lives\, stories\, and diverse experiences of Black Appalachians than anyone. Yet\, it is his generosity of spirit that makes him truly special.” \nTurner formerly served as dean of Arts and Sciences and interim president of Kentucky State University; vice president for Multicultural Affairs at the University of Kentucky; distinguished professor of Appalachian Studies and Regional Ambassador at Berea College; and research scientist leader at the Prairie View A&M University College of Agriculture and Human Sciences.  He received a lifetime of service award from the Appalachian Studies Association in 2009\, which joined other career highlights that include induction into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame. \nHis presentation at Marshall will be free and open to all. Refreshments will be provided.  The event is sponsored by the Center for Economic & Community Development in Black Appalachia and Isolated Communities\, the Carter G. Woodson Lyceum\, the John Deaver Drinko Academy\, and Academic Affairs. \nAll members of the campus community are encouraged to attend. Turner will sign copies of his book\, which will be available for purchase during the event.

SUMMARY:Beyond Waste Student Summit Marshall University
DESCRIPTION:The Beyond Waste Student Summits bring together students to understand the systemic impact of waste\, from extraction to disposal. This full-day leadership intensives invite students from all levels of experience and interest to co-create a collaborative and justice-oriented space. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to collaborate on simulated campaigns that range from building zero waste campus infrastructure to standing in solidarity with frontline communities. These spaces provide students with the opportunity to work on a project from start to finish\, allowing for mistakes and questions\, and giving students the opportunity to grow as leaders. \nIn the Beyond Waste Summits Series\, we will be offering different project simulations\, each focusing on getting a project off the ground and running on Emergence University\, your simulated campus for the day! The project simulation highlighted in this event will be: \nBreak Free From Plastic: Fighting for a Plastic-Free Campus \n\nGetting your campus president to commit to stopping the use of single-use plastics is a big step for any campus trying to achieve zero waste\, but how do you get there? In this simulation\, students will work on rallying interest from among the campus community\, and hosting a signing ceremony that works to hold your campus and president accountable.

The series features interviews with notable names including Dionne Warwick\, U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock\, Rev. We’re blessed to have such outstanding partners in delivering this series and concert at a time in our nation when the need for Gospel’s transcendent\, healing powers is so great.”

SUMMARY:King Coal Screening
DESCRIPTION:The Reuse Corridor and West Virginia Rivers are hosting a screening and discussion for King Coal\, the much-anticipated film from West Virginia’s Elaine McMillion Sheldon. Part documentary\, part art film\, King Coal explores the complex history and future of the coal industry\, the communities it has shaped\, and the myths it has created. Emerging from the long shadows of the coal mines\, King Coal uses McMillion’s personal experience to untangle the pain from the beauty and illuminates the innately human capacity for change.\n\n\n\nA short discussion will follow the film\, along with a collaborative reuse art project where community members can share their dreams for West Virginia’s future. Mark Buchanan with the Cabell County Solid Waste Authority will make a few remarks at the start of the event about how to better steward the environment around us\, as the film encourages us to do.\n\n\nPopcorn and drinks will be provided!\n\n\n\nEntry is free\, though you need to RSVP at this link to guarantee your spot: http://tinyurl.com/2pc74r7e.
