Whether it’s your 1st or 50th trail event\, this course through the backwoods and foothills of Wayne County is sure to enthuse even the most seasoned trail runner.\nWe invite you to Live Wild and Wonder at the sixth annual event on Saturday\, January 29th at 9am. DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art will open a new exhibition with a focus on the Ohio River and its tributaries titled West Virginia Chamber of Commerce Presents La Belle Riviere. The exhibit will be on view at HMA from Jan. 22 through April 17\, 2022.  \n“Using a variety of artworks and objects from the Huntington Museum of Art’s permanent collection\, La Belle Riviere will evoke an appreciation for the sublime geologic beauty of one of North America’s mighty rivers\, its vast watershed and many tributaries\, and the deep undercurrents of history that swirl just beneath the water’s surface\,” said John Farley\, HMA Senior Curator and Exhibition Designer.  \nThe Ohio River’s name is derived from a Senecan word ­– ohiːyoːh – meaning “good river.” When French colonists arrived in North America in earnest during the 1600s\, they described the Ohio River as La Belle Riviere or “the beautiful river.”   \n“The Ohio River has inspired many artists\, and this exhibition will include a great selection of both beautiful and historic works of art\,” said HMA Executive Director Geoffrey K. Fleming.  \nArtists included in the exhibit include American portrait painter Charles Bird King (1785-1862); German-born artist Augustus Kollner (1812-1906); Massachusetts native Sala Bosworth (1805-1890); American Joseph Rusling Meeker (1827-1887); and former Marshall University professor Stan Sporny (1946-2008)\, among others.  \nThis exhibit is presented by the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce.  \nThis program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.  \nFor more information on exhibitions at the Huntington Museum of Art\, visit hmoa.org or call (304) 529-2701. DESCRIPTION:This month’s Writers Can Read series will feature the well-known novelist Eliot Parker and the playwright Kris Hall\, both appearing in-person\, The event is free and open to the public and will take place on Monday\, January 17 at 7 P.M. in Heritage Station at 210 11th Street in downtown Huntington. \nWiley Cash is the New York Times bestselling author of A Land More Kind Than Home. He’s been a fellow at Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony\, and he teaches fiction writing and literature at the University of North Carolina-Asheville\, where he serves as Alumni Author-in-Residence. His new novel\, When Ghosts Come Home\, arrived on September 21\, 2021. He lives in North Carolina with his wife\, photographer Mallory Cash\, and their daughters. \nEric Douglas has been a journalist and writer his entire professional career. Born and raised in West Virginia\, he learned to scuba dive in Summersville Lake before moving to California and North Carolina to work in scuba diving. He has also written about diving for several magazines\, including the ongoing Lessons for Life column for Scuba Diving Magazine. Eric’s Held Hostage novel is his 23rd book. It features diving\, adventure\, exotic locations and the environment. \nThe “Writers Can Read” open mic night reading series takes place on the third Monday of each month (all year) from 7:00-8:30 in Heritage Station at 210 11th Street in downtown Huntington\, West Virginia. The event features two award-winning\, published authors that serve as “featured readers” to begin the event each month.
