Create Huntington will be hosting a music and fun-filled fundraiser to help re-fuel funds for its mini-grant program.\nFounded in 2008\, Create Huntington has\, through ideas sparked at its Chat ‘n’ Chew events\, been involved in propelling forward projects ranging from the creation of the West Virginia 5K to the opening of Gallery 842 in downtown Huntington\, planning for a dog park and planting trees around the city.\nAnd they’ve put money where their mouth is distributing nearly $20\,000 in matching micro grants to help fuel citizen-started projects throughout the city\nThe fundraiser will feature live music from FIVE Huntington-based and regionally-traveling eclectic live music acts – Madison Lewis\, Sean Whiting\, BASIE\, Short & Company\, and The Tangled Roots. Live music will start at 6:00 p.m.\nThere will also be raffles and there will be a donation taken at the door to help fuel Create Huntington. All of the money raised will directly help in funding a multitude of projects\, events\, and people; all of which have the common goal of making Huntington a better place.\nDoors open at 5pm. Yonder is a quintessential ensemble honing its craft night after night on the road\, and the fans are there to experience it in real time. The result is music that doesn’t stand still\, it’s always progressing and breaking unprecedented ground.\nWith their latest album\, Black Sheep\, Yonder Mountain String Band begins a new era. The first YMSB release produced by the band itself\, Black Sheep is\, by any measure\, a triumph\, perhaps the most mesmeric of their career. Yonder has its roots in the year 1998\, when the original quartet came together in Colorado. Songs like “Chasing My Tail” and “Alison” are rooted in tradition but as current as tomorrow\, animated by electrifying performance\, vivid production\, and the modernist power that has made Yonder one of the most popular live bands of their generation. Yonder founding members Aijala\, banjo player Dave Johnston\, and bassist Ben Kaufmann reconfigured Yonder Mountain String Band as a traditional bluegrass instrumental five-piece in 2014 with the recruitment of new players Allie Kral (violin) and Jacob Jolliff (mandolin). DESCRIPTION:The B’nai Sholom Synagogue\, 949 10th Ave.\, will host a special concert called “Music from Theresienstadt” at 3 p.m. Sunday\, Feb. 11\, featuring Marshall University professor of music and concertmaster for the Huntington Symphony Orchestra Elizabeth Reed Smith\, violist Bernard Di Gregorio\, cellist Andrea Di Gregorio from West Virginia Symphony’s Montclaire Quartet and mezzo-soprano Emily Capece\, artistic director of womanSong chorale. The concert will feature music composed by Gideon Klein\, Zigmund Schul\, Viktor Ullmann\, Hans Krasa and Ilse Weber who all died in the Holocaust.\n\n\nThe music was composed in Theresienstadt\, also called by its Czech name Terezin\, a Nazi ghetto in Czechoslovakia where prominent Jews\, including artists\, musicians and writers were sent from November 1941 to May 1945. Although there were no gas chambers in Theresienstadt\, the ghetto served as a way station for Jews who were eventually deported to death camps and forced labor camps. It was also used as a propaganda tool by the Nazis\, who allowed the prisoners to present performances and made a film of their activities. Many musical compositions survived\, as did artwork and writings.\n\nPresented by the Marshall University College of Arts and Media\, the Birke Fine Arts Symposium is made possible by the generosity of Helen Birke and her daughter\, Julie\, through the Birke Fine Arts Symposium Endowment.\nAll events are free and open to the public.
