SUMMARY:For the Hope of It All: Mixed Media Works by Kevin Allison
DESCRIPTION:ReCreate Appalachia presents an incredible Recovery Month exhibition featuring mixed media works by Kevin Allison.\n“For the Hope of It All” opens in the Turret Gallery of West Edge Factory during our September First Saturday Art Market. Come check out the exhibition\, then enjoy the food\, music\, and art vendors at the market!\nKevin will be on site from 2-4 pm for a meet and greet!\nArtist Statement by Kevin Allison:\nI was born and raised in the Chemical Valley of West Virginia. My father was manufacturing Agent Orange at the Monsanto plant in Nitro when I came along\, and I attended a high school with walls that sealed airtight in case of a chemical leak. Nitro and the surrounding areas are known as the “Chemical Valley” for its massive production of explosives\, chemicals\, and propellants. This was my childhood playground. It may be that my views on nature and life in general are vaguely skewed by this environmentally exciting upbringing. At the very least\, I still have a continuing love affair with the color orange.\nI’m a lifelong West Virginia resident\, and a Marshall University School of Fine Arts graduate\, with a focus in studio painting. In my brand of storytelling\, I combine multiple techniques to explore our culture. I use unconventional materials such as encaustic paint\, cold wax and found objects in my collages. In the fashion of our forebears (and other fauna)\, I cobble together a little bit of this\, and a little bit of that. Sometimes a lot more of that.\nMy assemblages explore the complexities of our Appalachian lives\, one layer at a time. I like to think I’m creating unique monuments to life in our wild and wonderful state.\nI’ve always had a sensibility for seeing beauty in decay. I’m surrounded by hollers\, relics\, and ghost towns. There’s discarded treasures all over the hard ground. I choose to utilize those discarded bits because I feel there’s a spirituality and a constant truth present in the things we choose to leave behind. I have found great inspiration in forgotten spaces.\nDuring my years of homelessness and active addiction\, I kept a journal and sketchbook. In 2023\, my recovery began\, and I utilized those items as inspiration for a new series of work.\n“For the Hope of it All” is a visual representation of my journey through homelessness and addiction.

SUMMARY:Docent Open House at Huntington Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art is offering a free informational Docent Open House on Tuesday\, Sept. 8\, 2026\, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for those who are interested in becoming volunteer art and nature tour guides. Light refreshments will be served.\n\n“If you think you would like to share your appreciation for art and nature with visitors of all ages to the Huntington Museum of Art\, then Docent Open House is for you\,” said HMA Director of Education Cindy Dearborn. “Docents give tours of our exhibits and nature trails. No previous experience in giving tours is necessary and all docents are thoroughly trained and supported by HMA staff members.”\n\nDocents gather on Monday mornings at the Huntington Museum of Art during the fall and spring for informal art training sessions with the staff members of HMA’s Education Department. “It would not be possible for the Huntington Museum of Art to provide the number of tours that we do without our docents\,” Dearborn said. “Lasting friendships have been formed by many of our volunteer docents. Being a docent is so rewarding when you see students and adults enjoying their visits to the Huntington Museum of Art.”\n\nFor questions about the docent program or other education programs at HMA\, call Dearborn at (304) 529-2701 or send her an email at cdearborn@hmoa.org.

SUMMARY:Ashley's Fiction Book Club at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:A Good Hard Look by Ann Napolitano \nForced by illness to leave behind a successful life in New York\, literary icon Flannery O’Connor has returned to her family farm in the small town of Milledgeville\, Georgia. With her health and time both limited\, all she wants is to be left alone to write. \nBut Flannery’s plans are soon upended by Melvin Whiteson\, a banker from Manhattan who has recently married the town belle. Melvin is at loose ends with his new life; though he has every opportunity\, he’s not sure where to begin. Flannery knows exactly what she wants\, but is running out of time. Through their unusual and clandestine friendship\, both will come to reflect on the decisions they have made and the paths they have chosen. \nLiterary history and fiction gracefully intersect in this emotionally charged novel of small town Southern life from one of our most beloved novelists\, which asks us all to consider how we can live our lives to the fullest.

SUMMARY:Back in My Day: Grandparents Weekend at HCM
DESCRIPTION:Huntington Children’s Museum is inviting children\, grandparents and grownups of all ages to step back in time during Back in My Day: Grandparents Weekend\, September 11–13. Admission to the Museum will be free for everyone all three days. \nThroughout the weekend\, families will encounter vintage and obsolete technology stationed around the Museum\, giving children a chance to discover objects that were once part of everyday life while encouraging grownups to share their own memories and experiences. \nChildren might discover how to dial a rotary phone\, how families watched movies before streaming\, where people found answers before Google\, or how photographs were taken before everyone carried a camera in their pocket. Tables will feature items related to communication\, entertainment\, toys and games\, daily life\, and finding information before the internet. \nBut Museum Executive Director Raine Klover says the objects themselves are only part of the experience. \n“Children are naturally curious when they encounter something they’ve never seen before\, but the real fun begins when a grownup says\, ‘Oh\, I remember this!’” said Klover. “We want these objects to spark stories. A rotary phone or VHS tape becomes an opportunity for a child to learn something about the grownups in their lives.” \nConversation prompts throughout the Museum will encourage adults to tell children about their own childhoods\, from favorite toys and television shows to how they communicated with friends and researched school projects. Families will also be invited to contribute to a collaborative Memory Garden by sharing some of the things that made their own childhoods bloom. \nThe weekend is designed to celebrate Grandparents Day while welcoming all families and generations to participate. Children do not need to attend with a grandparent to enjoy the event. \nBack in My Day: Grandparents Weekend will take place Friday\, September 11 through Sunday\, September 13\, from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. each day at Huntington Children’s Museum\, 1700 Washington Avenue in Huntington. SUMMARY:Weird Girl's Fiction Book Club at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:Motherthing by Ainslie Hogarth \nWhen Ralph and Abby Lamb move in with Ralph’s mother\, Laura\, Abby hopes it’s just what she and her mother-in-law need to finally connect. After a traumatic childhood\, Abby is desperate for a mother figure\, especially now that she and Ralph are trying to become parents themselves. Abby just has so much love to give—to Ralph\, to Laura\, and to Mrs. Bondy\, her favorite resident at the long-term care home where she works. But Laura isn’t interested in bonding with her daughter-in-law. She’s venomous and cruel\, especially to Abby\, and life with her is hellish. \nWhen Laura takes her own life\, her ghost haunts Abby and Ralph in very different ways: Ralph is plunged into depression\, and Abby is terrorized by a force intent on destroying everything she loves. To make matters worse\, Mrs. Bondy’s daughter is threatening to move Mrs. Bondy from the home\, leaving Abby totally alone. With everything on the line\, Abby comes up with a chilling plan that will allow her to keep Mrs. Bondy\, rescue Ralph from his tortured mind\, and break Laura’s hold on the family for good. All it requires is a little ingenuity\, a lot of determination\, and a unique recipe for chicken à la king…

SUMMARY:Baby Doe Screening at Foundry
DESCRIPTION:30 years ago\, Gail Ritchey\, a young woman from a conservative Christian community in rural Ohio\, gave birth alone and left her newborn in the woods. Now a mother of three\, her quiet suburban life is shattered when DNA evidence links her to “Geauga’s Child\,” and she is arrested for murder – despite saying the baby was stillborn. Facing a life sentence\, Gail leans on her family for support as she confronts the weight of societal and religious pressures. Directed by Jessica Earnshaw (Jacinta)\, BABY DOE cuts through the headlines to uncover the human complexity of Gail’s case – examining the intersection of women’s health\, justice\, and the outside forces that continue to shape stories like hers.
