DESCRIPTION:Throughout the year Huntington’s Spring Hill Cemetery provides a beautiful setting for reflection\,\nwhich brings comfort to visitors. The sense of healing created is heightened each September as 3\,000 U.S. flags fly in solemn formation to honor the lives sacrificed in the terrorist attacks of September 11th of 2001. \nGreater Huntington’s Park and Recreation District administers the cemetery\, and its renown has spread beyond its Tri-State area\, and the United States’ First Lady\, Melania Trump\, recently visited Ritter Park where 453 U.S. flags that are part of Spring Hill’s annual Field of Honor® display flew to recognize the number of children in Huntington’s foster care resulting from parental addiction to opioids. \nSeptember’s annual Field of Honor® display also remembers the loss of student athletes\, coaches\, officials and supporters of Marshall University’s football team when their chartered plane crashed while returning to Huntington after a game. \nA bell tower pays respect to 9/11 victims\, being purchased with proceeds of the annual Field of Honor® event\, has joined a touching memorial honoring those lost in Marshall University’s unforgettable tragedy. With these memorials and the Field of Honor® massive display of the Stars and Stripes\, Spring Hill Cemetery reaches out to the larger Huntington community offering the opportunity to remember\, reflect and find comfort. \nAdditionally\, the annual theme of Huntington’s Field of Honor® honors individuals those currently serving in the armed forces\, first responders and those killed defending our nation and serving our local community. \nThe Huntington Healing Field® display is a gift to the community made possible through donations\, sponsorships and the efforts of many dedicated volunteers. SUMMARY:Patriot Day Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District announces the return of The Healing Field to Spring Hill Cemetery September 6 – September 12. The Healing Field serves as a patriotic vigil to the thousands of victims of the 9/11 tragedy\, recognizes the lives lost in the 1970 Marshall Plane Crash\, memorializes Veterans of the Armed Forces and lost loved ones. Flags can be purchased for $35 at Spring Hill Cemetery and proceeds will benefit the Spring Hill Cemetery Memorial Bell Tower Fund. Previously posted flags held by the owner can be re-posted for $15 and retrieved on September 13. \nThe Marshall March of Remembrance will take place on September 11\, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. A Procession of Marshall Students will carry 75 flags from the Marshall Rec Center on 5th Avenue\, south on 20th Street\, to Spring Hill Cemetery. The students will place 75 flags in The Healing Field inside Spring Hill Cemetery before joining the Patriot Day Ceremony. \nPatriot Day is an annual observance on September 11 to honor the memory of the nearly 3\,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11\, 2001. This year’s Patriot Day Ceremony at Spring Hill Cemetery will include local officials\, First Responders\, Veterans of the U.S. Military\, Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District Executive Director Kevin Brady\, and patriotic music from local singers. This Ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday\, September 11\, 2019\, at 6:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery. Light refreshments will be provided following the ceremony. \nThursday\, September 12 will be set aside as a Day of Reflection before the Healing Field is taken down on Friday\, September 13. The Healing Field participants are asked to retrieve their flags on September 13 before 4:00 p.m. \nPlease join the Park District as we come together as a community during this week to pay our respects\, reflect and look forward together. \nThese events are sponsored by the Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District and Spring Hill Cemetery. DESCRIPTION:Huntington’s arts scene comes alive on Thursday\, September 12th at Arts Night Out at Heritage Station. The evening will kick off with a drum circle led by First Congregational United Church of Christ and end with the raucous and raunchy comedians of Huntington Comedy. In between you can learn about the art of writing about weaponry with Michael Connick\, enjoy three visual arts exhibitions\, carve a spooky ceramic tile at Full Circle Gifts and Goods\, watch a documentary about a local farming family\, all while exploring all that Heritage Station has to offer. \nArts Night Out is proud to present the documentary film Farmsteaders on September 12th at 8 pm at the Visitors Center at Heritage Station\, 210 11th Street\, Huntington. Director Shaena Mallett’s film follows the Nolan family and their Gallipolis dairy farm\, Laurel Valley Creamery. Members of the Nolan family will be on hand and will serve up some delicious dishes created using their signature cheeses. This event is a collaboration with POV\, the award-winning independent nonfiction film series on PBS. (www.pbs.org/pov) This screening is free and open to the public. \nFarmsteaders points an honest and tender lens at the beauty and hardship of everyday life\, as the Nolans work to balance their fears and hopes with so much at stake. For the Nolans only three things remain certain: family is everything\, nothing ever stays the same\, and the land holds it all together.” (from Farmsteaders.com). \nArtists Laura Moul and Kelsi Boyd will open solo visual arts exhibitions at Sip Wine and Whiskey Bar and The Red Caboose respectively. Laura’s exhibition showcases her extensive travels throughout Europe while Kelsi’s work casts a spotlight on the beauty of her hometown Point Pleasant. PAX Cafe will host an exhibition by Michelle’s Geekery\, a family of collaborative artists. \nElinore Taylor was a rebel with many causes. Aside from teaching\, fighting for human\, civil\, and environmental rights\, she was a playwright. Elinore’s niece\, Carter Taylor Seaton\, has published five of her plays\, all of which deal with politics\, or power\, or the misuse of both. Speak to Carter and get a sneak peek of the new book inside the Visitors Center. \nTaps at Heritage will host Huntington Comedy on their deck. Nate Cesco is headlining this flight of Huntington comedy along with host Alex Runyon\, guest performer Hilary Brewster\, and featured performer Ryan Clagg. \nAs always\, The Haute Wick Social will host an adoptable canine friend from Little Victories Animal Rescue Shelter for the evening. Last month’s dog\, Buttermilk (now Luna)\, found her forever home that evening and we hope to duplicate that magic. \nArts Night Out is a multidisciplinary arts event that occurs at Heritage Station in the heart of downtown Huntington the second Thursday of every month.
