SUMMARY:Chemical Valley Documentary
DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University film studies program will present a screening of the documentary Chemical Valley\, which delves into issues experienced during the 1980s in the Kanawha Valley\, related to industry’s impact on the environment and community. \nThe screening will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday\, Feb. 4\, in the Joan C. Edwards Playhouse\, and it will be followed by a Q&A session with director Mimi Pickering. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. \nCreated in 1991\, “Chemical Valley” explores issues such as job blackmail\, racism and citizens’ right to know in the 1980s in the region once dubbed by residents “the chemical capital of the world.” \nPickering is an award-winning filmmaker and director of Appalshop’s Community Media Initiative. Located in the Kentucky coalfields\, Appalshop is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year as a center for cultural organizing and place-based media\, arts and education to advance social justice\, environmental sustainability and economic equity. \n“Although Chemical Valley is nearly 20 years old\, Mimi Pickering’s documentary remains relevant today\,” said Dr. Walter Squire\, director of Marshall University’s film studies program. “The 2014 Elk River chemical spill demonstrates the need for continued environmental vigilance. Being able to speak with one of Appalachia’s premier documentarians can benefit not only filmmakers and other producers of media but also individuals concerned with various social justice issues facing their communities.” \nThis screening is supported by the West Virginia Humanities Council\, the Marshall University film studies program\, the Honors College\, the Graduate Humanities program\, and the Department of English.

SUMMARY:Jason Boland & The Stragglers
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 7 pm with music starting at 8 pm. Admission is $20 in advance and $25 at the door Ages 18+. For full band bios\, visit www.vclublive.com. \nMusic is having a moment. Listeners are crying out for something true–some meaty songs that’ll give us some comfort\, even as they cut closer to the bone.\nEveryone is finally ready for the gritty\, thundering country Jason Boland and the Stragglers have sharpened over almost 20+ years’ worth of selling out roomy venues and commanding stages across the nation.\n“We’re just trying to make something that we’re proud of\,” lead songwriter and vocalist Boland says. “If any more people want to take notice of it\, they’re welcome.”\nSince coming together in Stillwater\, Oklahoma\, Boland and his tight knit crew have sold more than half a million albums independently and earned a devoted following that’s swelled far beyond the band’s red dirt roots. At a Stragglers show\, oil patch roughnecks\, hippies\, college kids\, and intelligentsia all sway side-by-side like a traveling reincarnation of Austin’s Armadillo World Headquarters in its cosmic cowboy\, Willie Nelson heyday.\nWhile the Stragglers draw from rock and folk\, make no mistake: they traffic in unfiltered\, unfettered honky-tonk\, raw and lean.\nFor 2020\, the band is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of their debut album Pearl Snaps with a nationwide tour where the band will play the record front to back along with favorites from their extensive catalog. The legendary record was recorded with famed producer Lloyd Maines and behind the success of songs like “Pearl Snaps” “Somewhere Down in Texas” “Proud Souls” and others it quickly became a beloved classic and still continues to be named as a major influence for many of the top artists coming out of the Texas/Oklahoma country music scene.\nhttp://www.thestragglers.com

It focuses on two couples\, Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Benjamin and Phyllis Rogers Stone\, who are attending the reunion. Sally and Phyllis were showgirls in the Follies. Both couples are deeply unhappy with their marriages. Buddy\, a traveling salesman\, is having an affair with a girl on the road; Sally is still as much in love with Ben as she was years ago; and Ben is so self-absorbed that Phyllis feels emotionally abandoned. Several of the former showgirls perform their old numbers\, sometimes accompanied by the ghosts of their former selves. The musical numbers in the show have been interpreted as pastiches of the styles of the leading Broadway composers of the 1920s and ’30s\, and sometimes as parodies of specific songs. \nThe Broadway production opened on April 4\, 1971\, directed by Harold Prince and Michael Bennett\, and with choreography by Bennett. The musical was nominated for eleven Tony Awards and won seven. The original production ran for over 500 performances. The musical has had a number of major revivals\, and several of its songs have become standards\, including “Broadway Baby”\, “I’m Still Here”\, “Too Many Mornings”\, “Could I Leave You?”\, and “Losing My Mind”.
