SUMMARY:Thousands of Origami Cranes
DESCRIPTION:A project titled “Thousands of Origami Cranes” will be on display at the Huntington Museum of Art starting Saturday\, March 26\, and running through Sunday\, June 26. \nThe story says Sadako Sasaki was only two years old on Aug. 6\, 1945\, when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Sasaki began to show symptoms of leukemia\, was admitted to the hospital shortly afterward and passed away at the age of 12. Folklore says that a crane can live for a thousand years and a person who folds an origami crane will have their wish granted. Every day\, until her very last day\, Sasaki folded cranes\, 1\,300 to be exact. Now the cranes symbolize the peace that she wished for. \n“A lot of uncertainties are going on in the world\,” Akiko Praylow\, Japanese outreach coordinator at Marshall University\, said. “I thought about what I as a Japanese can do. The things we can do to the world might be small\, but what is important is to take an action. This project is open for everyone in the community. You do not need to know how to fold an origami crane. We can always learn together.” \nThe Japanese Outreach program at Marshall University\, housed in the Marshall University Research Corporation\, will display origami cranes at the museum throughout the spring. Praylow started folding the cranes with the hope of illustrating peace. She and Marshall students made many of the cranes at Marshall’s International Festival last year and others were made by the community at the Clay Center in Charleston during an origami workshop in February. \nThe number of cranes continued to grow when Japanese families from the West Virginia International School got involved. The number reached into the thousands\, thus the name of the project\, “Thousands of Origami Cranes.” The cranes will be part of the exhibit\, “E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation Presents East to West: Japanese Prints from the Burkart Collection.” \nFor more information on Museum of Art hours when the exhibition can be viewed\, visit hmoa.org. For more information about the Japanese Outreach Program or the virtual classrooms\, Praylow can be reached at akiko.praylow@marshall.edu.

SUMMARY:Whose Castle?: The Weaponization of Self-Defense
DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University Department of History will present the 2022 Charles Hill Moffat Lecture\, featuring Dr. Caroline Light\, director of undergraduate studies and senior lecturer at the Program in Studies of Women\, Gender and Sexuality at Harvard University. \nThe lecture\, “Whose Castle?: The Weaponization of Self-Defense\,” will take place Monday\, March 28\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Shawkey Dining Room of the Memorial Student Center on Marshall’s Huntington campus. \nThe lecture will draw from Light’s 2018 book\, Stand Your Ground. Dr. Greta Rensenbrink\, the chair of Marshall’s  Department of History\, says Light’s insights help to place the difficult issue of gun violence into historical context. \n“Her brilliant book has gotten a lot of attention because it addresses issues of gun violence and lethal self-defense that we can’t ignore today\,” Rensenbrink said.  “It’s a great example of how history can help up address current problems.” \nRensenbrink says she is glad that Light’s appearance on Marshall University’s campus is finally coming to fruition after being cancelled in the spring of 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. \n“It’s long awaited\, but maybe even more relevant today\,” Rensenbrink said. \nLight is also the author of That Pride of Race and Character: The Roots of Jewish Benevolence in the Jim Crow South. The book illustrates the experiences of southern Jewish assimilation. Light’s research explores histories of citizenship and belonging. \nThe lecture is free and open to the public and a reception will follow the lecture.

SUMMARY:HarmoniCollege #9\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:HarmoniCollege #9\, 2022 will be\nFriday April 1st & Saturday April 2nd 2022\n(no April’s fool\, this is real)\nat Heritage Farm\, Huntington\, WV.\nAfter a long COVID delay\, HarmoniCollege will return.\nOur ‘professor’ will be Sandy Weltman\nHere is the ‘syllabus’ of what Sandy will be teaching on Saturday\, from 9 to 5.\n=====================================================\nLeaning to Play in “Minor” Positions\nIn this class we will learn how to play minor music (as opposed to major) in five different positions (keys) on one harmonica. We’ll learn to understand when\, why and how to choose a particular position for any particular minor song. We’ll also learn a minor song(melody) and a solo in these 5 positions.\nA Pentatonic Approach For The Harmonica\nI like to tell my students that if they learn nothing else but the pentatonic and blues scale along with some associated licks and patterns\, they will probably be able to jam along very competently on any folk\, rock\, blues or bluegrass song or jam session that they encounter. In this class we are going to dig into the five note pentatonic scale for the harmonica. We will learn licks\, patterns and approaches to jamming with this simple yet profound scale.\nThe Blues Scale\nPatterns\, exercises\, and licks will be taught to help assimilate these all important six notes into all of your playing.\n12th Position\nWhat is it? When and how to use it. Patterns \,licks and exercises to help you get going. We will also learn a swingy version of a harmonica standard using this position.\nLearning To Play in 1st Position (you’ve got to be kidding… I did that years ago when I first started)\nNot kidding. We’ll learn way more than you thought possible in this position\, including blues\, jazz/swing\, bluegrass and even some ethnic music.\nApproaching Jazz and Swing\nThis class will focus on an approach to learning\, understanding and playing one of the most crucial components to playing jazz/swing on the harmonica\, the 2-5-1 progression. Specifically\, 2-5-1 licks and patterns in a few different positions.\nOverblowing\nWhat is it? How to do it? How to use it? …along with assorted overblow licks in assorted positions.\n========================================================\nIt all happens at Heritage Farm\, Huntington\, WV.\nThe cost is $100. That covers :\nFriday night meet\, eat\, and greet jam from 6pm to 11pm. (food provided)\nSaturday classes from 9 to 5. Breakfast \, lunch\, and dinner provided.\nSaturday night jam from 7 to 11.\nAll the ‘on campus’ rooms have been reserved. There are local rooms available within 15 minutes driving time.\nWe hope you will join us for our 9th session.\nTo reserve a spot email jrumbaug@live.marshall.edu\nJim Rumbaugh\nThe Harmonica Club of Huntington\, WV

SUMMARY:Keep the Light: Green Gardens & Growing Things
DESCRIPTION:Keep the Light: Green Gardens & Growing Things features iconic works from the Huntington Museum of Art permanent collection that focus on horticulture and agriculture. \nAmong those iconic works in this exhibit are “The Garden Wall” by Winslow Homer; “Young Woman in a Landscape” by Pierre-Auguste Renoir; “The Harvester” by Julien Dupre; and “Love Tokens” by Jules Breton. “The works in this exhibit are all tied together by focusing on flowers\, gardens\, and other growing things\,” said HMA Senior Curator/Exhibition Designer John Farley. “We will present works that express enjoyment of the sublime beauty of our world\, as well as examples that reflect efforts to harness its life-giving elements. Sustenance of body\, mind\, and spirit is a common denominator. I hope that these themes will be uplifting for our visitors as we emerge from winter and look forward to the promise of spring.” \nThis exhibit will also include a new Huntington Museum of Art acquisition of a very rare and unusual color monoprint by West Virginia artist Blanche Lazzell. “We are pleased to showcase this new gift to HMA of art by trailblazing artist and teacher Blanche Lazzell titled ‘Hibiscus\,’ ” Farley said. “We thank John A. Webb and Lazzelle W. Parker for this gift given in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus G. Lazzell.” Blanche Lazzell is considered one of the most important women artists of 20th century\, having been an early adopter of modernism and cubism in her work\, which can often be seen in her print-work. It was Lazzell who once remarked that “Originality\, Simplicity\, Freedom of Expression\, and above all Sincerity\, with a clean cut block\, are characteristics of a good wood block print.” \nOther works included in this exhibit include lithographs by Salvador Dali and Romare Bearden\, and an oil painting by Herbert Meyer titled “Three Poppies\,” which is part of HMA’s renowned Daywood Collection. \nIn conjunction with this exhibit\, a Gardening for Pollinators Presentation by HMA Conservatory Director Dr. Mike Beck takes place on May 28\, 2022\, at HMA beginning at 10 a.m. Call (304) 529-2701 for more information. \nThis exhibit is presented with support from The Isabelle Gwynn and Robert Daine Exhibition Endowment. \nThis program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.

SUMMARY:Abby Hamilton at The Loud with Ally Fletcher and Scott T. Smith
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve spent any time exploring Kentucky’s booming music scene\, chances are you’ve heard somebody say\, “You’ve really got to hear Abby Hamilton.” The Kentucky singer-songwriter has garnered a reputation as a can’t-miss live performer\, opening for acts like Wynonna Judd\, Shakey Graves\, Kelsey Waldon\, Valley Queen\, Arlo McKinley\, and Justin Wells\, as well as singing at festivals including Railbird and Masters Musicians. With influences ranging from the classic country divas to Bruce Springsteen\, she wins over audiences with her clever lyrics and entrancing vocals. \n\nHer long-anticipated second EP\, “Afraid of the Dark\,” is bound to appease Hamilton’s avid fan base\, perfectly encapsulating her unique sound that feels just as comfortable in the Appalachian mountains as it does in a whiskey-soaked bar room in the city. She spent months in a hollow in Prestonsburg\, Ky.\, crafting songs that tell stories inspired by true events about hope\, home\, and young love. It’s a genre-bending folk-rock experience that cements her place as one of the region’s most interesting young and up-and-coming songwriters. \nDoor opens at 8pm\, show starts at 9pm.\n$10 at the door.
