SUMMARY:Songs of Pangea
DESCRIPTION:The Pangean mountains are an extensive mountain range spanning the Scottish Highlands to the Appalachian Mountains. Once\, these mountains were one landmass (Pangean mountain)\, now they are divided and located on different continents.\nIn this recital\, Dr. Alexander Lee\, Dr. Henning Vauth\, and Dr. Júlio Alves\, will perform music from different regions. The program will include Benjamin Britten’s Folksong arrangements (Scottish\, Ireland\, and England)\, Kenneth Frazelle’s Appalachian Folksong arrangements\, Johannes Brahms’s Folksong arrangements\, Heitor Villa-Lobos’s art songs\, and Moses Hogan’s Spiritual arrangements.\nThis program came from Dr. Lee’s desire to express our need for unity through troubling times. Our world is divided politically\, ideologically\, religiously\, racially\, and ethnically. However\, like all continents and lands were once one\, it is essential to remember the root of all people and countries are identical.\nIt is Alexander Lee’s desire that this program reminds audiences that although everything seems divided\, we all share the same origin and root. Like these songs from different areas (and land) came from one ancient mountain family (Central Pangean Mountain)\, we are all from one family.\nDr. Alexander Lee\, tenor\nDr. Júlio Alves\, guitar\nDr. Henning Vauth\, piano \n\nProgram\n15 obras para voz e violão\nHeitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959)\nQue Lindos Olhos\nÁria\nfrom Bachianas Brasileiras\, No. 5\nLundú da Marquesa de Santos \n\nAppalachian Songbook\nKenneth Frazelle (b. 1955)\nCharmin’ Birdie\nIn East Virginny\nOld Joe Clark\nBonnie Blue Eyes \n\nThree Folk Songs from Deutsche Volkslieder\nJohannes Brahms (1833-1897)\nArr. Allen Krantz (b. 1962)\nDa unten im Tale\nFeinsliebchen\nSchwesterlein \n\nFolksong Arrangements: Vol. 6 – England\nBenjamin Britten (1913-1976)\nI will give my love an apple\nSailor-boy\nThe Shooting of his Dear \n\nThe Crocodile\nfrom Tom Bowling and Other Song Arrangements (1913-1976)\nThe Last Rose of Summer\nfrom Folk Song Arrangements\, Vol. 4\, “Moore’s Irish Melodies” \n\nArr. SUMMARY:Thousands of Origami Cranes
DESCRIPTION:A project titled “Thousands of Origami Cranes” will be on display at the Huntington Museum of Art starting Saturday\, March 26\, and running through Sunday\, June 26. \nThe story says Sadako Sasaki was only two years old on Aug. 6\, 1945\, when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Sasaki began to show symptoms of leukemia\, was admitted to the hospital shortly afterward and passed away at the age of 12. Folklore says that a crane can live for a thousand years and a person who folds an origami crane will have their wish granted. Every day\, until her very last day\, Sasaki folded cranes\, 1\,300 to be exact. Now the cranes symbolize the peace that she wished for. \n“A lot of uncertainties are going on in the world\,” Akiko Praylow\, Japanese outreach coordinator at Marshall University\, said. “I thought about what I as a Japanese can do. The things we can do to the world might be small\, but what is important is to take an action. This project is open for everyone in the community. You do not need to know how to fold an origami crane. We can always learn together.” \nThe Japanese Outreach program at Marshall University\, housed in the Marshall University Research Corporation\, will display origami cranes at the museum throughout the spring. Praylow started folding the cranes with the hope of illustrating peace. She and Marshall students made many of the cranes at Marshall’s International Festival last year and others were made by the community at the Clay Center in Charleston during an origami workshop in February. \nThe number of cranes continued to grow when Japanese families from the West Virginia International School got involved. The number reached into the thousands\, thus the name of the project\, “Thousands of Origami Cranes.” The cranes will be part of the exhibit\, “E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation Presents East to West: Japanese Prints from the Burkart Collection.” \nFor more information on Museum of Art hours when the exhibition can be viewed\, visit hmoa.org. For more information about the Japanese Outreach Program or the virtual classrooms\, Praylow can be reached at akiko.praylow@marshall.edu.

SUMMARY:Whose Castle?: The Weaponization of Self-Defense
DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University Department of History will present the 2022 Charles Hill Moffat Lecture\, featuring Dr. Caroline Light\, director of undergraduate studies and senior lecturer at the Program in Studies of Women\, Gender and Sexuality at Harvard University. \nThe lecture\, “Whose Castle?: The Weaponization of Self-Defense\,” will take place Monday\, March 28\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Shawkey Dining Room of the Memorial Student Center on Marshall’s Huntington campus. \nThe lecture will draw from Light’s 2018 book\, Stand Your Ground. Dr. Greta Rensenbrink\, the chair of Marshall’s  Department of History\, says Light’s insights help to place the difficult issue of gun violence into historical context. \n“Her brilliant book has gotten a lot of attention because it addresses issues of gun violence and lethal self-defense that we can’t ignore today\,” Rensenbrink said.  “It’s a great example of how history can help up address current problems.” \nRensenbrink says she is glad that Light’s appearance on Marshall University’s campus is finally coming to fruition after being cancelled in the spring of 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. \n“It’s long awaited\, but maybe even more relevant today\,” Rensenbrink said. \nLight is also the author of That Pride of Race and Character: The Roots of Jewish Benevolence in the Jim Crow South. The book illustrates the experiences of southern Jewish assimilation. Light’s research explores histories of citizenship and belonging. \nThe lecture is free and open to the public and a reception will follow the lecture.
