SUMMARY:Hard Hats and Heroes
DESCRIPTION:he Junior League of Huntington invites families with children of all ages on for a socially distant scavenger hunt Saturday\, April 24\, 2021.\nThe Junior League of Huntington’s interactive Hard Hats and Heroes event has become a signature event\, but after much consideration regarding public health\, hosting the event in its traditional form didn’t seem appropriate. However\, the Junior League of Huntington’s Board was unanimous in wanting to host an event that highlighted the work that our frontline heroes do and the important way they are working to ensure the safety of the Greater Huntington community.\n“The Junior League of Huntington presents this event as a Thank You to our Community Heroes and Frontline workers – police\, fire\, EMS\, doctors\, nurses and medical workers\, the water and sanitation departments… the list goes on\,” said President\, Christy Houvouras. “While we want to offer an activity for the children of the community to participate in\, we also want to shine light on the work – and workers – that make our community such a great place to live.”\nFamilies will participate in an outdoor scavenger hunt across the Greater Huntington Area to visit different community service\, civic\, and private organizations which help to keep our communities running. At a drive-thru pickup point\, families can purchase their ticket\, including an activity book and a passport for the event. Families will be encouraged to take their own route based on clues to each location where truck operators will be on hand to demonstrate how their vehicles work and explain what they do. Check out a fire engine\, sanitation truck\, aerial bucket truck\, dump truck\, and much more! Find out why they are such an important part of our community.\nThe Junior League of Huntington is empowering women by building better communities. It is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism\, developing the potential of women\, and improving communities through the effective action\, education\, and leadership of trained volunteers. We serve the community through projects aimed at fighting human trafficking\, helping women gain selfsufficiency\, and providing free healthcare for the uninsured and underinsured. SUMMARY:The Bodice Project
DESCRIPTION:The Bodice Project opens at the Huntington Museum of Art April 24 and runs through July 25\, 2021 \nThe Bodice Project is a traveling sculpture exhibition about breast cancer survivors and their emotional healing post breast cancer. \nAfter breast cancer every person asks the question: “Who am I now?” Breast cancer has pushed and pulled on the physical and emotional aspects of each individual\, and they are left with physical and emotional scars. \nThe goal of The Bodice Project is to aid in the emotional healing of those women and men facing the challenges of breast cancer and to open the eyes and hearts of others. Nearly everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way. The Bodice Project sheds light on the unique and individual stories of their journeys through the healing power of art. \nIt is a project that brings together artists\, breast cancer survivors\, patients and the public in a unique and meaningful way. Artists from the Mid-Atlantic area have created torso sculptures of breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomies or reconstructive surgery. When presented to the public\, these beautiful works evoke a range of emotion\, from empathy to solace. \nThis exhibit is presented with support from The Katherine & Herman Pugh Exhibitions Endowment. \nThis exhibit is presented with support from The Isabelle Gwynn and Robert Daine Exhibition Endowment. \nAdditional support provided by Women 2 Women of the Huntington Regional Chamber of Commerce. \nThis program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts. \n
