Bring your family and friends for this all-ages event\, featuring live music\, poetry reading\, visual art exhibition\, art sales\, and fun for all! \nThe Winner Arts Fest is a happy hour pop-up art gallery festival that highlights the talents of local arts community. The Winter Arts Fest is set in the historic Central City District at 14th St West with more than six locations featuring special activities including local artists\, live music\, and poetry. The locations include Sloane Square Gallery\, Village Antique Mall & Central City Museum\, Cicada Books and Coffee\, The Wild Ramp\, Hosey’s Building above Thistle Patch Vintage Garden and Antiques\, and hallway outside West End Tattoo Club. \nThe Winter Arts Fest will feature 17 local artists\, including 14 visual artists\, 2 poetry authors\, and 1 musician. (Suggest a quote from Jamie about the work). \nVillage Antique Mall & Central City Museum: 610 14 STW \nVillage Antique Mall will host live music 5 pm – 6:30 pm featuring Keyamo Onage. Meet the artist Larry Sumpter in the Central City Museum area where his mural depicting life in early Central City is installed. \nIn addition\, the works of abstract artist Patty Stewart is on display in the balcony Village Antique Mall.  There you will see several works on canvas\, as well as other original smaller pieces.  All of Patty’s paintings are available to purchase. Patty Stewart will return to Village Antique Mall on March 19th for a special event featuring a sale on works of canvas and artful everyday items. \nHosey’s Art Upstairs: 1444 Adams Ave \nHattie and Nan’s will sponsor a pop-up gallery show featuring local artists at Art Upstairs\, located in the Hosey’s Building on Adams Ave and 14th St. W. The Art Upstairs show will feature a collection of works from Poochie Myers and Nancy Polan from Hattie’s Vault and local artists including Don McDowell\, Patti Del Checcolo\, Kathryn Thompson\, and Marianne Henning. \nThe Wild Ramp: 555 14th STW & The Wild Ramp Online Food Hub: 518 14 STW \nThe Wild Ramp will host Linda Childers watercolor artist and creator of the Wild and Wonderful West Virginia Puzzle Project. The Wild Ramp is well known for local food\, but also features a wide variety of handmade and artisan products! \nSusan Maslowski\, of Mud River Pottery\, will be the featured artisan at The Wild Ramp’s new Online Food Hub location (518 14th St. W). There will also be food samples from local producers including ScagglePop Kettlecorn and Skinny Piggy Kombucha. \nThe West Huntington Public Library Branch will distribute free take home tiny art kits in celebration of National Youth Art Month. The kits will include all the supplies to make a tiny work of art work that can be returned by March 26 to the West Huntington Library for their Tiny Art Show.  The West Huntington Public Library will award prizes after a week of voting starting March 28th. \nCicada Books & Coffee: 604 14th STW \nCicada Books and Coffee will host a poetry reading by Ron Houchin and Jeff Tigchelaar beginning at 5:30 p.m. Ron Houchin is a retired public school teacher of thirty years and is the author of eleven books. His latest poetry collection\, Talking to Shadows\, came out in 2020 from LSU Press.  Jeff Tigchelaar is the author of the collection Certain Streets at an Uncertain Hour\, winner of the Kansas Authors Club Nelson Poetry Book Award and Jeff is the recipient of a poetry fellowship from the Ohio Arts Council. \nRe-Vital Multi-Media Show: 720 14STW \nArtists Sa-Rai Robinette and Megan Osborne will display original collaborative works combining photography and print making. The Re-Vital Show will utilize nostalgic Huntington landmarks with a vision for the future from the prospective of these artists. \nWe hope you enjoy the Winter Arts Fest and stay tuned for more events in the Central City District @ 14 STW.

DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University A.E. Stringer Visiting Writers Series will host bestselling essayist Melissa Febos and acclaimed poet Donika Kelly\, Thursday\, March 3\, at 7:30 p.m. in the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center. \nKelly is the author of two poetry collections: Bestiary (Graywolf 2016)\, winner of the Cave Canem Poetry Prize\, a Hurston Wright Legacy award and the Kate Tufts Discovery Award; and The Renunciations (Graywolf 2021)\, recently shortlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award in poetry. Kelly’s works have been published in The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, The Paris Review\, and Foglifter. She’s a professor of creative writing at the University of Iowa. \nFebos is the author of the memoir Whip Smart and three essay collections. Febos’s Girlhood\, is a national best-seller and National Book Critics Circle finalist. Febos is the recipient of the Jeanne Córdova Nonfiction Award from LAMBDA Literary. Her works have appeared in The Paris Review\, The Believer\, The Sun\, New York Review of Books and The New York Times Magazine. Febos teaches at the University of Iowa in the nonfiction writing program. \nDr. Rachael Peckham\, professor of English and coordinator of the Stringer Visiting Writers Series at Marshall\, organized the reading event. \n“Donika Kelly and Melissa Febos are some of the biggest\, best-selling names in contemporary poetry and creative nonfiction\,” Peckham said. “I am overjoyed that our campus and Huntington will get to hear them read live\, especially considering that Kelly and Febos were recently named finalists for the National Book Critics Circle Award. For them to both receive this prestigious honor simultaneously is remarkable.” \nThis event is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts\, the Office of Intercultural Affairs\, the John Deaver Drinko Academy and with support of a mini-grant from the West Virginia Humanities Council.  Any views\, findings\, conclusions\, or recommendations expressed in this reading do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities. \nThe reading is free and open to the public and can be streamed at www.marshall.edu/livestream. DESCRIPTION:Marshall University’s 36th Annual Juried Student Exhibition will be on view March 8-31 in the Birke Art Gallery\, located in Smith Hall on the Huntington campus. The exhibit features students’ best artworks from throughout the past two years\, as selected by an outside juror. \n“For students in the School of Art and Design\, (the Annual Juried Student Exhibition) is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year\,” Gallery Director Jamie Platt said. “This show is a unique opportunity for student artists. Testing their artwork in an arena of their peers outside of an assignment is something many of these students have not had a chance to do yet. It is exciting to watch them practicing the skill of public presentation that will be a big part of their professional lives.” \nEight of the artworks will be awarded cash prizes totaling $3\,000. This year’s juror is artist and educator Danielle Riede\, who grew up in the United States and Iceland\, received her Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University and studied with Daniel Buren at the Kunstakademie Duesseldorf. \nRiede’s international exhibition record includes galleries and museums in Mexico City\, Athens\, Berlin\, New York\, and many other cities. Riede is the recipient of numerous awards\, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship\, the Virginia Commission for the Arts Fellowship in Sculpture and a New Frontiers Grant from Indiana University. She is currently the Randolph H. Deer Professor of Painting at Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI (Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis). \nThe public is invited to a reception from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday\, March 23. SUMMARY:Indeterminacy and the Measurement Problem Reception and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Indeterminacy and the Measurement Problem by artist Gabe Michael Kenney will be on view Feb. 28-March 17 in the Charles W. and Norma C. Carroll Gallery\, located in the Visual Arts Center on 3rd Avenue in downtown Huntington. \nThe Indeterminacy and the Measurement Problem exhibit in the Carroll Gallery features the works of Kenney of Columbus\, Ohio\, in a cerebral\, mixed-media installation combining printmaking\, sculpture and performance. Kenney is a conceptual artist interested in the role of consciousness in day-to-day perception. His artworks are inspired by research into “the Observer Effect\,” the disturbance of an observed system by the act of observation. \nThe public is invited to a reception for Indeterminacy and the Measurement Problem\, where visitors to the gallery will have an opportunity to engage with the artist. The reception will be from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday\, March 9. Kenney will stage a performance during the reception\, and immediately following the reception\, he will give a talk about his work in Room 209 of the Visual Arts Center.
