SUMMARY:Wheels
DESCRIPTION:Wheels opens at the Huntington Museum of Art July 3 and runs through October 3\, 2021 \nThe wheel is one of civilization’s greatest inventions. Though derived from a simple shape\, the construction of a working wheel took great ingenuity\, and it was only within the last six millennia that a wheel-and-axle combination appears in the human record. This development was a significant advancement in technology as it allowed more efficient agricultural cultivation and vastly revolutionized transportation. It also was utilized in many other applications\, such as pottery making and food processing. \nHMA will celebrate this remarkable device with an exhibition of works that feature images of wheels in use. From the creations of folk artists such as Herman Hayes’ whimsical sculpture Large Star Wheel With Four Supporting Figures and Evan Decker’s Cowboy With Bells\, Wheels\, Squirrels\, Hens to Huntington photographer Levi Holley Stone’s images of automobiles and bicycles\, a variety of wheel-themed works are included. \nPop culture is represented in original artwork for comic books and strips depicting the Batmobile and Little Orphan Annie\, while John Baeder’s Royal Diner illustrates the prevalence of the automobile in American culture. The exhibition features a wide range of mediums and will allow the viewer an opportunity to step back and look at a common object from a new perspective. \nThis exhibit is presented with support from The Isabelle Gwynn and Robert Daine Exhibition Endowment. \nThis program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.

SUMMARY:CK Alumni Band July 3
DESCRIPTION:Nothing says “return to normal” like a good\, old fashioned patriotic concert and that is just what the Ceredo-Kenova Alumni Band will deliver on July 3rd at 7pm at the Kenova Towne Square. This outstanding group of local musicians has been temporarily silenced\, like so many other things\, by the Covid=19 Pandemic.  They returned for the first performance in more than a year at the Celebration of Life held in memory of legendary coach Carl Ward on June 13th.  Now they will continue the long-standing tradition of providing a nostalgic taste of Americana by presenting their annual Patriotic concert on July 3rd.  Under the direction of Mastro Bill Galloway the every popular band will present a number of patriotic and broadway musical selections for the enjoyment of all in attendance.  Admission is free so bring your lawn chair and join us at 7pm on July 3rd at Kenova Towne Square as the every-popular Ceredo-Kenova Alumni Band once again “strikes up the band” and brings back a popular tradition.

SUMMARY:History Alive Ostenaco
DESCRIPTION:Sharing influences in West Virginia’s history at Beech Fork State Park includes History Alive! evenings throughout the summer. Join us at the park activity building for a first-person portrayal of Ostenaco. \nAbout Ostenaco: \nDuring the French and Indian War\, Ostenaco was a leader of Cherokee warriors who allied with Virginia military leaders against northern tribes fighting with the French. His leadership provided a vital alliance for the British colonial settlements in much of present West Virginia. Ostenaco’s influence contributed significantly to the expansion of English-speaking people into Western Virginia. Ostenaco is portrayed by Doug Wood of Hurricane\, WV\, at the Beech Fork State Park activity room at Beech Fork State Park Headquarters Building. Start time is 7:00 p.m. Program lasts about one hour. Family-friendly. Questions and conversation. Open to the public at no cost. \nOstenaco presentation is a History Alive! program made possible by the West Virginia Humanities Council and West Virginia State Park system interpretive programming services at Beech Fork.
