SUMMARY:Huntington Museum of Art - Fine Art Sale
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art has announced that it will conduct a special Fine Art Sale of pastels by the noted American artist Leon Dolice (1892-1960). An online sale goes live on Aug. 4\, 2021\, at 11 a.m. at: THE DOLICE SALE. Works not sold beforehand will be available for viewing and purchase at the Huntington Museum of Art on Aug. 6\, 7 and 8\, 2021. Works will be sold on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nTo purchase one of the works shown online\, buyers should send an email to gfleming@hmoa.org with the number and title of the work or works that they wish to purchase. \n“The Huntington Museum of Art is pleased to present this collection of more than 20 works by New York artist Leon Dolice\, who is known for his striking New York cityscapes\,” said Geoffrey K. Fleming\, HMA’s Executive Director. “And one of the extraordinary things about this grouping is the large size of each work\, with the pastels coming in at approximately 12 x 19 inches each.” \nLeon Dolice was born in Vienna\, Austria in 1892\, and went on to study art in Europe. He immigrated to the United States in 1920\, finding a retreat in the European Bohemianism of Greenwich Village\, where he picked the streets of this landmark neighborhood as his first subjects. Though he originally concentrated on etching\, as that medium declined\, he focused almost exclusively on pastels depicting New York City\, devoting all his time to chronicling the architecture\, back streets\, dock scenes and other nostalgia that was fast disappearing from the face of Manhattan. He won numerous accolades for his work\, and although he traveled the East Coast recording landmarks in other cities including Washington\, D.C.\, Baltimore\, Chicago and Philadelphia\, he always returned to his new home of New York. \nDolice’s works are included in the Museum of the City of New York; The New York Public Library; The New York Historical Society; Georgetown University Lauinger Library; and The Print Club of Philadelphia\, among others. \n“We are pleased to feature these works which come with sterling provenance\,” continued Fleming\, “the group having originally been part of the famed collection assembled by the noted Spanierman Gallery of New York City. Owned and operated by the respected art dealer Ira Spanierman\, the collection features some of the finest examples of works by Dolice that have ever surfaced on the market.” \nThe works included in this special sale depict soft and misty views of Manhattan’s coastline and shipyards as well as its soaring skyscrapers and bridges. \nA significant portion of proceeds from the Fine Art Sale of Leon Dolice pastels will benefit the Huntington Museum of Art. Works will be sold on a first-come\, first-served basis. Shipping is available at the purchaser’s expense through the UPS Store in Ashland\, Ky. \nIn the past few years\, the Huntington Museum of Art has conducted fine art sales featuring the work of Chuck Ripper\, 2016; Wolf Kahn\, 2017; Don Pendleton\, 2018; Adele Thornton Lewis\, 2019; and Stan Sporny\, 2020. \nFor more information on events at HMA\, call (304) 529-2701 or visit www.hmoa.org. HMA is fully accessible. \nWest Virginia residents may obtain a summary of the registration and financial documents from the Secretary of State\, State Capitol\, Charleston\, WV 25305. Registration does not imply endorsement.

SUMMARY:The Artistic Legacy of the Sarah Wheeler Charitable Trust
DESCRIPTION:The Artistic Legacy of the Sarah Wheeler Charitable Trust opens at the Huntington Museum of Art August 7 and runs through October 31\, 2021 \nThe Huntington Museum of Art has enjoyed a rich history during its lifespan of nearly seven decades\, thanks in large part to the wide support it has received from the local community. In addition to the generous gifts of land and art that were made by museum founder Herbert Fitzpatrick before its opening in 1952\, there have been a multitude of supporters who have stepped up to provide financial assistance and make gifts of artwork to the museum. One of the most impactful gifts in terms of the museum’s collection has been the Sarah Wheeler Charitable Trust\, which provides funds for art purchases in memory of Sarah Slack Wheeler and her husband\, Steve Wheeler. \nSarah Wheeler was born in Huntington in 1917\, the daughter of Elizabeth and Frank Slack. She led an adventurous life\, especially after her marriage to Steve Wheeler\, whose work as a mining engineer took the couple on travels around the world. They lived overseas for lengthy periods of time\, with extended residential stays in Paris\, Venice\, Monaco and Beirut. Her travels gave her access to a wide range of cultural experiences\, including visits to some of the world’s most important museums. \nBoth Steve and Sarah were practicing artists as well\, so the arts were deeply ingrained in their lives. The couple lived out their retirement years in Huntington\, where members of Sarah’s extended family still resided. Following Steve’s passing\, Sarah made plans to establish a trust to support three institutions that she felt were vital to the well-being of Huntington: Marshall University\, the Cabell County Public Library\, and the Huntington Museum of Art. The museum’s funds are dedicated to the purchase of paintings that were created in the year 1940 and earlier. \nAmong the key works that have been purchased with the funds include paintings by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot\, Thomas Doughty\, Henry Ossawa Tanner\, Guy Wiggins\, Edith Wilkinson\, Blanche Lazzell\, Thomas Hart Benton\, and John Frederick Peto. A selection of the works purchased with funds from the Wheeler bequest will be showcased in the Museum’s Switzer Gallery\, a space that was named in honor of former Huntington Mayor Rufus Switzer\, whose own trust has provided key funds for the operation of the Museum since its founding. \nThis exhibit is presented with support from The Katherine & Herman Pugh Exhibitions Endowment. \nThis exhibit is presented with support from The Isabelle Gwynn and Robert Daine Exhibition Endowment. \nThis program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.

After losing the rights to some of his early animated characters\, he finally struck Hollywood gold with the creation of Mickey Mouse and received Academy Awards for two short films in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s. His ambitions in animation were finally realized with the 1937 release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs\, which became\, in its day\, the highest grossing sound film of all time! Join us at 7:00 p.m. in the Beech Fork State Park activities building. The program is free to attend and open to the public. History Alive! is made possible by the West Virginia Humanities Council and the West Virginia State Park system.
