SUMMARY:West by God
DESCRIPTION:The Keegan Theatre presents Brandon McCoy’s heartwarming new play\, WEST BY GOD. The play made its world premiere on September 27\, 2019 at The Keegan Theatre in Washington\, DC. WEST BY GOD will travel to West Virginia in the first ever KeeganConnects tour\, a new annual initiative designed to take original\, provocative plays to small towns and communities nationwide. The play will run at Marshall University with performances January 17th\, 18th\, 19th\, 24th\, and 25th in the Joan C. Edwards Playhouse at 7:30pm and a 2pm showing January 19. \nWEST BY GOD is a story about home. In a small town in the Appalachia region of West Virginia\, two different families grapple with issues of grief and love\, memory and identity\, and with the distance and time that both unite and divide generations. A new play by West Virginia native Brandon McCoy\, WEST BY GOD is a funny\, heartwarming\, and gut‐wrenchingly honest examination of the divide between urban and rural America\, and the kinds of prejudice and intolerance too often left unchallenged in our society. \n$10.00 Admission for all shows except January 19th which is FREE!\nFor tickets\, call (304) 696-ARTS (2787)

SUMMARY:Dr Bacon with Scroungehound
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 8 pm with music starting at 10 pm. Admission is $7 in advance and $10 at the door Ages 18+. For full band bios\, visit www.vclublive.com. \nDR. BACON is a 7 Piece touring Appalachian Funk\, Grass and Rock & Roll band. Blending incredibly diverse instrumentation with broad\, deep musical influences\, allows the band to perform a plethora of widely accessible\, danceable music.\nThe Dr. Bacon Live Experience is truly a spectacle to behold\, bringing the audience on a musical Journey that lulls and spikes in energy\, caressing ears with lush beauty and whipping crowds into a tribal romp\, shaking booties and shedding inhibitions. This manic versatility ensures that no matter what genre of music you identify with most\, you will hear something that resonates. Dr. Bacon started playing together in 2012 on King Street in Boone as a 3 piece busking with acoustic bluegrass\, folk\, and 90s pop/rock/hip-hop influenced music. Several lineup changes over the years and a move to Asheville have refined and redirected the band’s sound\, incorporating funk\, rock\, soul\, psychedelic and world music to Appalachian influences. The blending of several elements of these genres (often within the same song) along with unique instrumentation is the real Bacon flavor.

SUMMARY:Art Into Words - Craig Drennen
DESCRIPTION:For the first Art Into Words opportunity of the year\, come hear from Craig Drennen\, a WV boy who has made good in his career as a contemporary artist. While Drennen can paint like a dream\, his visual and conceptual responses to Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens have led him to integrate installation\, video\, and performance into his practice. Artist Talk\, Monday\, January 27 in VAC 209 @ 6pm. \nCraig Drennen is an artist based in Atlanta\, GA who identifies primarily as a painter even though the centrifugal force of his studio practice often propels him outside the practice of painting. Recent solo exhibitions include “Mit Zuckerstange” at Flyweight Projects in Brooklyn and at Cloaca Projects in San Francisco. Prior to that he had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Georgia in Atlanta\, Ellen de Bruijne Projects in Amsterdam\, and Samsøñ gallery in Boston. Drennen’s work has been reviewed in Artforum\, Art in America\, and the New York Times\, among other places. He has been interviewed by StoryCorps\, Art Pulse\, and New American Paintings. He teaches at Georgia State University\, served as dean of the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture\, and writes occasional art criticism. In 2018 Drennen was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in the Fine Arts. \nSince 2008 Drennen has organized his studio practice around Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens. It is considered Shakespeare’s most problematic work and is the only one of his plays not performed in his lifetime. He chose a “failed” work because the play’s obscurity creates unpoliced cultural bandwidth that he can creatively occupy. For each character in the play he produces a distinct body of work based on contemporary associations\, resulting in a collection of related pieces composed of separately considered parts. Timon of Athens allows him to build an entire imaginative universe from one discarded 17th-century play. He is represented by Hathaway Gallery in Atlanta. \nFree and Open to the Public\nFor questions\, contact sandra.reed@marshall.edu\n“Funded in part by the Joan C. Edwards Distinguished Professors in the Arts Endowment\nwith support from the College of Arts and Media\, Marshall University.”

SUMMARY:MUsic Mondays - “The B List”
DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University School of Music will continue its lecture series\, MUsic Mondays\, at 6:30 p.m. Monday\, Jan. 27\, at the Cellar Door\, 905 3rd Ave. in Huntington. The 2019-2020 series\, titled “The B List\,” is exploring composers whose surnames begin with “B\,” culminating in the fall of 2020 with an all-Beethoven series to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth. \nThe first lecture of the spring\, “Setting the Scene: Vincenzo Bellini and the Bel Canto Aria\,” will focus on the 19th-century opera composer Vincenzo Bellini and his beautiful melodies. Lead presenter Dr. Vicki Stroeher\, professor of music history at Marshall\, said Bellini was the quintessential composer of Italian bel canto opera. \n“His long\, flowing melodies possess a rarity of beauty that simultaneously displays the singer’s virtuosity and captures the character’s psychological mood\,” Stroeher said. “But\, the particular design of the scene within the opera also plays an important role in staging the aria’s emotional effect. We will look at the elements of bel canto melodies and the so-called ‘scene with aria.’” \nIn addition\, Stroeher said\, Yohan Yi\, bass member of the Metropolitan Opera Chorus\, will attend the lecture. \n“I am excited that our Joan C. Edwards Distinguished Professor in the Arts\, Yohan Yi\, bass\, of the Metropolitan Opera will be with us\,” she said. “Perhaps we can entice him to sing an aria.” \nThe spring lecture series will continue at the same time and place on the following Mondays:\n• Feb. 17\, “Seven Speakers on Love: Bernstein’s Serenade after Plato’s Symposium”\n• March 16\, “Dance ‘til you’re Baroque: Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2”\n• April 20\, “The Historiographical/Progressive Brahms: Listening Closely to His Symphony no. 4 in E minor\, Mvt. IV.” \nSeating is limited. Participants are invited to arrive early to enjoy conversation and purchase refreshments. Donations of $10\, payable at the door\, are welcomed and go to support student travel and research in the music program. Checks should be made payable to Marshall University. \nFor more information about MUsic Mondays\, call the School of Music at 304-696-3117.

SUMMARY:Stories from the Cellar: Starting Over (A StorySLAM event)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Stories From The Cellar\,” a Huntington Comedy Story Slam event! The theme of the show is “Starting Over.” \nDo you have a true story about new beginnings? Taking a leap of faith? Leaving all you know behind? We want to hear you tell it! All story tellers welcome! Come with your best 5 minute story to share with the crowd and our judges. \nJust show up\, fill out a short form\, and we’ll pick 10 contestants to tell their stories. \nGUIDELINES for telling a story: \n✔ Keep it to 5 minutes or less. A light will flash once at 4 minutes (to let you know you have 1 minute left). A light will flash twice at five minutes. Don’t go over. \n✔ Your story must be true and must have happened to you. You have to be one of the main characters of the story. \n✔ Don’t use racist\, homophobic\, sexist speech or any kind of hate speech. Foreign accents for a laugh or making someone’s identity the punchline of a joke will get you disqualified. \n✔ The story has to be related to the theme! \n✔ You can’t use any props or notes. Your story should be from memory! \nWhile the event is presented by Huntington Comedy\, your stories can be as somber or funny as you choose. Feel free to reach out with any questions!
