DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University Jazz Ensemble I will present its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday\, April 17\, in Smith Recital Hall on Marshall’s Huntington campus.\nFor this concert\, the ensemble will include tunes it presented on tour as well as new material the members have been working on.\n“We will present some contemporary\, large jazz ensemble music from the late\, great trumpet player Roy Hargrove\, some canonic works by Duke Ellington\, as well as some new takes on classic tunes\,” said Jeff Wolfe\, director of the MU Jazz Ensemble I.\nThe concert is free and open to the public\, with sponsorship from the School of Music in the College of Arts and Media.\nThe MU Jazz Ensemble I is the premier large jazz ensemble in the Marshall University Jazz Studies Program. Over the past year\, the MU Jazz Ensemble has performed with world-renowned drummer and band-leader Jeff Hamilton and NEA Jazz Master Jason Marsalis at the Inaugural Huntington International Jazz Festival and Ellis Marsalis International Jazz Piano Competition\, as well as with noted trumpet player and band leader Rob Parton at the 50th Annual Marshall University Winter Jazz Festival. In addition to multiple on-campus concerts each semester\, the MU Jazz Ensemble I performs frequently across West Virginia and the Tri-State area\, and at regional high schools and jazz festivals.

DESCRIPTION:Arts Night Out\, a multimedia arts experience at the Shops at Heritage Station\, will premiere on Thursday\, April 11th from 6 pm – 9 pm. The event will include three solo visual art exhibitions\, dramatic performances by Alchemy Theatre Troupe\, a short film festival\, and the introduction of a new literary event series\, Huntington Fiction Factory. Grab your friends or make it a date night. Browse the shops at Heritage Station. Check out some cool local art and chat with the artists. Indulge in your favorite adult beverages at Sip or Taps and finish up the night with some fresh treats from Moonlight Cookies.\nThe three featured artists are Benjamin Tappan\, Patty Stewart\, and Robbie Poore. Benjamin Tappan’s work will be the feature at Moonlight Cookies. Tappan graduated from the Columbus College of Art & Design in 2014 as a Bachelor of Fine Arts\, with a focus on photography and painting. His show\, titled “This is a Failed Idea I Won’t Paint Over”\, conveys the uncertainty that is an unfortunate staple for almost everybody of his generation. Sip Wine & Whiskey Bar will host Patty Stewart’s exhibition titled “Splash of Color”. Stewart is a West Virginia native and full-time artist. She is best known for her abstract paintings which are full of vibrant colors. Her primary medium is acrylic paint\, but she occasionally uses resin to make certain pieces pop. The Red Caboose will feature the work of assemblage artist Robbie Poore. Poore is an Ashland\, KY native who now lives in Huntington. He explores a wide range of themes in his work and his pieces and drawings often include pop culture and musical references\, faces and cats.\nHuntington Fiction Factory is a craft-forward lecture series taking place on the second Thursday of the month at 7 pm at Heritage Station. Each month\, a guest lecturer will present a short presentation on an element of writing craft\, expertise\, and/or business\, followed by a brief Q&A and reception. Marie Manilla is kicking off the April event with a discussion on the art of short fiction.\nArts Night Out @Heritage Station is a seasonal event held at Heritage Station on the second Thursday of the month between April and October. The event will feature art exhibition openings\, one-night-only performances and readings\, and artisan pop-ups. This long running Off Broadway absurdist comedy places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904\, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism. In his first comedy for the stage\, the popular actor and screenwriter plays fast and loose with fact\, fame\, and fortune as these two geniuses muse on the century’s achievements and prospects\, as well as other fanciful topics\, with infectious dizziness.\nTickets are $15. DESCRIPTION:Sweets for Sight is a friendly Dessert competition benefiting the Services Division at Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind. The CWAB® provides free services to the blind and visually impaired in Cabell and Wayne counties and beyond. Come for an evening of sweet entertainment and delights. Each guest can purchase tasting tickets for $1 apiece to sample various offerings from dessert vendors. Each dessert vendor is also competing for several awards such as Best Taste\, Best Display and the People’s Choice. Each guest has the power to vote for their favorite booth. SUMMARY:Chamber Choir Invitational
DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University School of Music will host a Chamber Choir Invitational on Saturday\, April 13\, in Smith Recital Hall on the Huntington campus. High school choral ensembles are encouraged to attend and will have an opportunity to perform for a panel of adjudicators who will provide comments on each selection performed.\nGuest clinician Dr. Matthew Oltman will spend time working with each ensemble to encourage the implementation of adjudicator comments. Marshall faculty members will serve as adjudicators as well\, including Dr. David Castleberry and Dr. Briana Nannen.\nOltman is music director emeritus of the Grammy award-winning male vocal ensemble Chanticleer and artistic director emeritus of the New York-based Empire City Men’s Chorus. He conducts the Conservatory Choir\, teaches courses in choral conducting and literature\, and helps lead the Shenandoah Conservatory’s dynamic choral department. He is also the associate director of CORO and leads the CORO/Simpson College summer master’s program in choral conducting.\nAs a singing member of Chanticleer\, he sang for 12 albums and toured the globe. As director\, he worked to expand the ensemble’s repertoire to attract a younger\, tech-savvy audience over the course of 300 concerts worldwide. He also helped launch the Chanticleer Live in Concert recording label and edited the Chanticleer Choral Series\, published by Hinshaw Music. He has facilitated commissions from composers as well.
