SUMMARY:Marshall Alumni Reading for Facing Hunger Foodbank
DESCRIPTION:The A.E. Stringer Visiting Writers Series at Marshall University will host a reading to support Facing Hunger Foodbank at 7 p.m. Thursday\, Sept. 26\, in Room 154 of Smith Hall. \nIt will feature readings\, a Q&A session\, and book signing with Marshall alumni Jordan Farmer and Rajia Hassib. This event is free and open to the public. \nJordan Farmer is the author of The Pallbearer (Skyhorse Publishing\, 2018) and the forthcoming The Poison Flood (G. P. Putnam’s Sons\, 2020). A West Virginia native\, he earned his master’s degree from Marshall University and his Ph.D. at The University of Nebraska-Lincoln. \nIn the words of Smith Henderson\, author of Fourth of July Creek\, The Pallbearer is a “feat of sustained tension and deep humanity. With trenchant insight into the way young men are primed to make disastrous choices\, Farmer’s moving debut gripped me from the first page and did not let go or disappoint. Get acquainted with Farmer’s work now – you’re going to be hearing about him for a long time.” \nRajia Hassib was born and raised in Egypt and moved to the United States when she was 23. Her first novel\, In the Language of Miracles (Penguin Random House\, 2015)\, was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and received an honorable mention from the Arab American Book Award. Her second novel\, A Pure Heart (Penguin Random House)\, was released in August 2019. She holds a master’s degree in Creative Writing from Marshall University. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times Book Review\, The New Yorker online\, and Literary Hub. She lives in Charleston with her husband and two children. \nLaila Lalami\, author of Pulitzer Prize finalist The Moor’s Account found A Pure Heart\, “A captivating novel about family\, love\, and home. Hassib masterfully excavates the secret loyalties that drive women to make fateful choices and\, in so doing\, explores important themes of guilt and responsibility\, shame and forgiveness.” \nThe event is sponsored by the Department of English and the College of Liberal Arts. \nA suggested donation of two or three nonperishable food items would be appreciated for admission. For more information\, contact at Cody Lumpkin at lumpkinb@marshall.edu or Wendi Kozma at kozma@marshall.edu.

SUMMARY:The 2nd Annual Bill Hill Memorial Duathlon
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, Harmony House hosted the very first Bill Hill Memorial Duathlon in honor of one of our community\’s greatest supporters. Not only was he an avid cyclist\, but he was a huge advocate for those experiencing homelessness. He organized collections for Harmony House and was hands on with the homeless veteran\’s center. \nThis combined with the great turnout from last year is why we are bringing back the duathlon for a second year in a row. Help us continue Bill\’s legacy by registering today. Registration can be completed at https://aptiming.com/race/953. \nDay of registration and check in will begin at 7:00 am with the races starting promptly at 8:00 am. \nNot a cyclist? That\’s okay! You can register for just the 5k portion of the duathlon and still participate. Can\’t make it? You can also make donations to Harmony House through the link above or by visiting our website at www.harmonyhousewv.com. See you on race day!

SUMMARY:West Virginia Pumpkin Festival
DESCRIPTION:Since 1986 West Virginia Pumpkin Park in Milton has celebrated the glory of autumn and  the harvest with the West Virginia Pumpkin Festival\, which has turned into one of the state’s largest fests. The festival was designed to help farmers with the raising and selling of pumpkins. Located in Milton\, WV\, between the two cities of Huntington and Charleston\, along the I-64 corridor\, the festival attracts attention from throughout the region.  Each October\, more than 50\,000 people travel to Milton to participate in our celebration of the pumpkin harvest. \nThe festival hosts a cultural array of activities for the entire family to enjoy.  In addition to over 100 skilled artisans who display juried crafts\, numerous special exhibits and demonstrations are presented throughout the festival.  Master craftsmen share their expertise in areas such as blacksmithing\, pottery making\, quilting and woodworking\, a mountain men encampment\, and lots of old-time demonstrations like sorghum making\, and much more\, along with many business booths. \nFestival dates are Oct 3rd\, 4th\, & 5th from 9am – 9pm\, and Oct 6th from 9am – 6pm.
