SUMMARY:American Paintings
DESCRIPTION:American Paintings opens at the Huntington Museum of Art September 14 and runs through February 13\, 2021 \nThe Huntington Museum of Art stands fortunate among its similarly sized peers to have developed a permanent collection wide enough in scope to offer a survey of American painting. Built across generations\, this legacy reflects the generosity of many donors and benefactors – and the cultivation and maintenance of those connections – as well as the sharp curatorial maneuverings of dedicated staff members over the years. \nAlthough every artist responds to their unique moment in history\, our creative efforts reveal larger patterns of shared cultural experience. Beginning with examples from the American colonial period and culminating with some of the latest contemporary paintings ushered into our permanent collection\, this exhibit will illustrate an evolution in style and approach to subject matter as American painters from sea to shining sea seek to establish and redefine their artistic practice. \nThis program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.

SUMMARY:Huntington Sesquicentennial Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Reception planned tentatively for Friday\, October 22\, 2021\, which is the 200th birthday of Collis P. Huntington. \nThe Huntington Museum of Art will participate in the City of Huntington’s yearlong celebration of its 150th birthday with a special exhibit and publication of a new art reference book that both feature the work of Huntington artists. \nThe Huntington Sesquicentennial Exhibit will be on view at the Huntington Museum of Art from September 18\, 2021\, through January 16\, 2022. An opening reception for this exhibit is tentatively planned for Friday\, October 22\, 2021\, which is the 200th birthday of Collis P. Huntington. \nBeginning with a bronze portrait of city founder Collis P. Huntington by famed sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington\, the exhibit will include early landscape paintings that depict the genesis of the built environment in Huntington and move forward to more contemporary representations by artists such as former Marshall University professor Stan Sporny. A selection of decorative objects that were made in Huntington will also be included\, such as pottery from the Wyllie China Company and glass from manufacturers such as Huntington Tumbler Company and Rainbow Glass Company. \nThe primary focus includes artists who have lived and worked in the city\, ranging from familiar names such as Chuck Ripper and Adele Thornton Lewis\, to former Huntington barber Billy Scott\, whose paintings depict the lives of the city’s African-American residents in bygone days. Covering the entire timespan of the city’s existence\, the show will also highlight work in a variety of media from the late 19th century to contemporary artworks by June Kilgore\, Theresa Polley-Shellcroft\, Vernon Howell\, Klaus Ihlenfeld\, Tina Williams Brewer\, and Don Pendleton. \nHMA is pleased to announce that a new biographical dictionary on all known artists who have lived in Huntington will be released during the city’s anniversary year. Titled “Eclectic Rhythms: The Artists of Huntington\, West Virginia 1871-Present\,” the book is dedicated to noted art historian Chris Petteys (1927-2006)\, who authored the groundbreaking work titled “Dictionary of Women Artists: An International Dictionary of Women Artists Born Before 1900.” \nThe new book contains nearly 600 biographies of artists of every type who made their home in the city at some point during their careers. “Editing a book about the artists of Huntington\, West Virginia\, was both a daunting and rewarding task\,” said HMA Executive Director Geoffrey K. Fleming. “Huntington has been blessed with a number of talented artists and I believe this book highlights the talents of each one of them while providing a valuable research tool for anyone interested in the city’s artistic past.” \nThis exhibit is presented with support from The Isabelle Gwynn and Robert Daine Exhibition Endowment. \nThis program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.

SUMMARY:Museum Day
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art will open its doors free of charge to all Museum Day ticketholders on Saturday\, September 18\, 2021\, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 17th annual Museum Day\, a national celebration of boundless curiosity in which participating museums emulate the free admission policy at the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based museums. \nThe annual event allows museums\, zoos and cultural centers from all 50 states to emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington\, D.C.-based facilities\, which offer free admission every day. This year’s event is sponsored by The Quaker Oats Company. \nMuseum Day goes beyond getting visitors through museum doors—it acts as a springboard to empower and help advance the hopes and ambitions of the public\, particularly school-aged children and those in underrepresented communities. It represents a national commitment to access\, equity and inclusion. \nWith many public spaces being shut down for a year or more\, Museum Day 2021 celebrates the reopening of museums after long closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s theme\, Experience America\, represents the return to\, and resurgence of\, our country’s diverse cultural experiences\, in the safest possible way. While tickets will be free of charge\, participating museums will have safety precautions in place for this year’s event so guests can safely and comfortably enjoy their experience. \n“The Huntington Museum of Art is pleased to continue its long-standing practice of participating in Museum Day\,” said HMA Executive Director Geoffrey K. Fleming. “Visitors on Museum Day will see an outstanding exhibit of American paintings from HMA’s permanent collection.” \nThe Huntington Museum of Art is a fine art museum with permanent exhibits of Near Eastern art\, antique firearms\,  Ohio Valley glass\, and West Virginia decorative arts. Located on more than 50 acres\, HMA is also home to the C. Fred Edwards Conservatory of tropical and subtropical plants. For more information\, visit hmoa.org or call (304) 529-2701. The Huntington Museum of Art is fully accessible. \nMuseum Day tickets will be available for download at Smithsonianmag.com/MuseumDay beginning August 18\, 2021. Visitors who present a Museum Day ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues on September 18\, 2021. One ticket is permitted per email address.
