SUMMARY:Charlotte Schmidlapp Distinguished Lecture in Women's Studies: Joan Quigley
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University will present the 2020 Charlotte Schmidlapp Distinguished Lecture in Women’s Studies\, featuring author Joan Quigley\, author of Just Another Southern Town: Mary Church Terrell and the Struggle for Racial Justice in the Nation’s Capital. Quigley’s lecture\, “Until Full and Final Victory: Mary Church Terrell and the Battle for Equality\,” will be Friday\, March 6\, at Foundation Hall. A reception begins beforehand at 6:30 p.m.\, with the lecture beginning at 7 p.m. Books will be available for purchase. \n“Mary Church Terrell was an educator and a writer who championed both civil rights and women’s suffrage\,” said Laura Michele Diener\, director of the Women’s and Gender Studies program at Marshall. “As Joan Quigley will discuss\, Terrell’s life’s work illuminates the complexity of American activism and the need to keep advocating for justice for all people. As we celebrate 100 years of women’s constitutional right to vote in 2020\, we remember her story and honor her legacy.” \nThe presentation is free and open to the public\, with the support of the Schmidlapp family\, Fifth Third Bank\, Intercultural Affairs\, the Simon Perry Center for Constitutional Democracy and the John Deaver Drinko Academy.

It focuses on two couples\, Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Benjamin and Phyllis Rogers Stone\, who are attending the reunion. Sally and Phyllis were showgirls in the Follies. Both couples are deeply unhappy with their marriages. Buddy\, a traveling salesman\, is having an affair with a girl on the road; Sally is still as much in love with Ben as she was years ago; and Ben is so self-absorbed that Phyllis feels emotionally abandoned. Several of the former showgirls perform their old numbers\, sometimes accompanied by the ghosts of their former selves. The musical numbers in the show have been interpreted as pastiches of the styles of the leading Broadway composers of the 1920s and ’30s\, and sometimes as parodies of specific songs. \nThe Broadway production opened on April 4\, 1971\, directed by Harold Prince and Michael Bennett\, and with choreography by Bennett. The musical was nominated for eleven Tony Awards and won seven. The original production ran for over 500 performances. The musical has had a number of major revivals\, and several of its songs have become standards\, including “Broadway Baby”\, “I’m Still Here”\, “Too Many Mornings”\, “Could I Leave You?”\, and “Losing My Mind”.

SUMMARY:New Music Series #5 - Kuzu
DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University School of Music presents Central City New Music Series #5 \nKUZU\n(brilliant sax-guitar-drums trio from Chicago/Asheville)\n(Dave Rempis / Tashi Dorji / Tyler Damon)\nhttps://www.daverempis.com/kuzu\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPAAue0L3Oo \nKUZU is a hard-charging but patient trio that came together in the fall of 2017\, after saxophonist Dave Rempis\, a stalwart of the Chicago improvised music scene\, worked with both Tashi Dorji (guitar) and Tyler Damon (drums) individually as part of a lengthy solo tour of the U.S. that he undertook in the spring of that year.  Dorji and Damon’s work as a guitar/percussion duo has become well-known\, a highly refined and specific language developed through relentless touring and recording over the last few years\, with a sound that straddles improvised music\, rock\, and any number of as-yet-undefined territories.  These two provide an incredibly fresh take on the possibilities inherent to spontaneous composition.  Superimposing Rempis into this mix was a logical next step after the relationships they’d forged individually.  The trio’s debut record Hiljaisuus (“silence” in Finnish…) was released on LP by the well-known label Astral Spirits in summer 2018\, and on cd by Aerophonic Records in January 2019. The band plans two new releases in early 2020 on the same labels\, using material recorded live on tour in October 2018. They also plan tours of the US and Europe in 2020. \nMusically\, these three create a highly focused pallet of sounds. At times\, spacious gestures carve up the canvas with the austerity of a calligrapher\, while at others those sparse gestures build into an unstoppable tsunami of energy. Those waves are never impulsive or impetuous though\, they ebb and flow logically and patiently out of simple and clearly defined sources. Rempis’ penchant for pentatonic melodies and rough and tumble timbres combines seamlessly with Dorji’s thick\, raw sound and singular approach to intonation\, buttressed by Damon’s rapid-fire yet powerful stickwork\, to produce a music that’s exquisitely detailed at any one point in time\, yet carries the narrative arc of their often set-length explorations without ever losing its coordinates. In this music you can hear the many hours together in a van roaming the hills of Tennessee and Pennsylvania\, the plains of Texas and Illinois\, and the forests of North Carolina and New England\, trading playlists ranging from jazz icons like Pharaoh Sanders and Yusef Lateef to Scandinavian black metal bands like Craft and Darkthrone. While this isn’t a new thing in creative music – broad ears are a trademark of musicians in this world – what makes the pairing so unique is the truly organic way in which they string these influences together into a coherent sound. This isn’t a Frankenstein pastiche of bits and pieces held together with duct tape and glue\, and a paper-thin conception. This is an emotionally deep and sincere effort to join genuinely disparate influences arrived at only through patient toil. When we ask if Rempis is channeling Coltrane\, or a Turkish clarinet player; does Dorji sound like a Delta bluesman\, or a southeast Asian rocker from the 70’s; is that Art Blakey or John Bonham rolling out through Damon’s toms; the answer is undoubtedly all of the above. And yet\, despite the breadth of the trio’s inspirations\, their music never collapses under the weight of its aspirations\, fearlessly carving out a new corner in the broader sonic landscape. \n

SUMMARY:Casting Crowns “Only Jesus” Tour
DESCRIPTION:Describing the members of CCM powerhouse Casting Crowns as “heroes of faith” feels like an understatement. The band has produced mega-hits like “Praise You In This Storm\,” “East to West\,” “Who Am I\,” and “Just Be Held\,” broken sales records\, sold out arenas\, won prestigious awards and traveled the world singing songs of redemption. There’s not much within the realm of Christian music the band hasn’t accomplished. The impact of Casting Crowns is incalculable\, the fingerprint of their songs forever imprinted onto the hearts of millions of people. \nBut for Mark Hall\, lead singer and primary songwriter\, describing the band’s trajectory as any sort of heroic effort is entirely wrong. When discussing the band’s latest project\, Only Jesus\, Hall takes great pains to shift the focus off the band\, off himself\, and solely onto the one they sing about. Only Jesus personifies the band’s mission to help people understand the nature of God’s love and Jesus’s sacrifice\, digging deep into the who and the why\, inviting the listener on a heart-journey of foundational faith\, immovable trust and ultimately\, freedom in Christ. “I want people to see that God is the author and the finisher of our faith\,” Hall shares. “He starts the work and He finishes the work. If we could just rest in the fact that He saved us\, that He’s got us\, we can rest in what He’s doing now and strive for what’s ahead.” It’s a timeless message\, and one that’s still changing lives today. For Casting Crowns\, there’s one thing they hope people will take away after listening to the new album —only Jesus.Describing the members of CCM powerhouse Casting Crowns as “heroes of faith” feels like an understatement.
