DESCRIPTION:The Opening Reception for Tri-State Arts Association Exhibition will take place on June 5\, 2022\, from 2 to 4 p.m. \nIn conjunction with the Huntington Museum of Art\, the Tri-State Arts Association presents its biennial juried exhibition\, a recurring showcase of the best artwork representing artists from West Virginia\, Ohio and Kentucky. A variety of media will be displayed\, including painting\, drawing\, photography\, ceramics\, sculpture\, glass\, wood\, textiles\, and mixed media. \nThe Tri-State Arts Association was founded in 1953 to encourage and promote the work of artists living and working in West Virginia\, Ohio and Kentucky. TSAA and HMA have enjoyed a natural partnership thanks to the organizations’ shared mission to champion the arts in our community. \nThis program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.

SUMMARY:The American Countess to Visit Huntington
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Area Convention & Visitors Bureau invites the community to welcome The American Countess Riverboat to Huntington this Friday\, June 10\, for the afternoon. The Countess is a sister ship to The American Queen that has made several stops in Huntington over recent years. \nThe fourth paddlewheel cruise ship to join the American Queen Steamboat Company (now American Queen Voyages) fleet launched on the Mississippi River at the start of the 2020 season. Built from an existing ship hull\, the American Countess underwent reconstruction\, including being lengthened by 60 feet. The new four deck American Countess accommodates 245 passengers on 6- to 15-day itineraries on the Mississippi\, Ohio and Tennessee Rivers. 175 passengers are booked on this trip. \nThe Countess will arrive sometime Friday morning. Passengers will then disembark and tour the city. This particular voyage began in Pittsburgh on June 7 and will conclude in Louisville on June 14. Other stops will include Wheeling\, WV; Marietta\, Ohio; Augusta\, KY; Cincinnati; and Madison\, Indiana. The boat will depart around 5 p.m. on Friday. \nThe CVB encourages anyone who may encounter any of the passengers to give them a warm welcome. People are welcome to come down to the riverfront to see the boat and take pictures. But due to safety regulations\, no one is permitted on the boat and tours cannot be offered.

DESCRIPTION:Marshall University will present an exhibition featuring 10 blocks from the AIDS Memorial Quilt\, a piece of art conceived in November of 1985 by longtime San Francisco gay rights activist Cleve Jones to create a memorial for those who had died of AIDS and help others understand the devastating impact of the disease. \nThe exhibition will open Friday\, June 10\, in the Charles W. and Norma C. Carroll Gallery\, inside the Visual Arts Center at 927 3rd Ave. in downtown Huntington. The public is invited to attend an unfolding ceremony at 1 p.m. on opening day\, June 10. The exhibition will be on view through July 30. \nGallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. \nThe quilt was displayed for the first time on Oct. 11\, 1987\, on the National Mall in Washington\, D.C.\, during the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. It covered a space larger than a football field and included 1\,920 panels. Volunteers unfolded the quilt at sunrise as celebrities\, politicians\, families and loved ones read the 1\,920 names of those represented in quilt. \nThe reading of names is now a tradition followed at nearly every quilt display. Half a million people came to view the quilt that first weekend\, and the unveiling was followed by a \n20-city national tour. Now\, the National AIDS Memorial works with hundreds of partners across the country to organize over 1\,000 displays in schools\, universities\, places of worship\, corporations and community centers. \nNew panels continue to be made and today\, the entire AIDS Memorial Quilt is a 54-ton tapestry with nearly 50\,000 panels dedicated to over 110\,000 individuals.
