SUMMARY:Senses - An Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Can machines be taught to see\, hear\, speak? What is lost? What might be found? These questions coil in the roots of this exhibition by artists Christiana Caro and Kimberly Lyle. Caro was employed by Google to teach an intelligent camera about seeing. Lyle is reimagining old technology designed to gather auditory sensory data and question the logic within these systems. Both reflect on the interface of the body with technology to imagine forms that might allow us to uncover other ways of knowing. \nThe reception will be held Thursday\, October 13 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. \nBIRKE ART GALLERY\nLocated in Smith Hall on the corner of\nHal Greer Boulevard and Third Avenue\nHuntington\, WV 25755 | 304-696-4312\nFor gallery hours call or visit the website: marshall.edu/art-galleries \nAll events are free and open to the public

SUMMARY:The Red Clay Strays - The Loud
DESCRIPTION:Broadberry Entertainment Group presents:\n𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐬 at The Loud\nOctober 14\, 2022\nDoors 8pm / Show 9pm\n$15 ADV / $20 DOS\nTickets HERE\n—\n𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐘 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐘𝐒\nWith a sound as classic as the crackling of a Sun Records vinyl still spinning somewhere in Memphis\, yet as fresh as the musical stylings of the 21st century\, The Red Clay Strays are busy making waves with their spellbinding and genre-bending brand of tunes. Reminiscent of the vibrant heyday of southern music\, the band finds their origins in the styles of classic country\, rockabilly\, and gospel-fed soul all the while ushering a new era of rock-and-roll that is as distinctive as the men who form it. Born and bred in the red dirty clay of South Alabama\, Brandon Coleman (lead vocals/guitar)\, Drew Nix (vocals/electric guitar/harmonica)\, Zach Rishel (electric guitar)\, Andrew Bishop (bass)\, and John Hall (drums)\, blended their unique individualities and influences together to create a band with a rare sincerity that isn’t often seen in today’s industry. After spending the past fiver years cutting their teeth in the Gulf Coast music scene while simultaneously running the roads discovering who they are and where they belong in the world\, The Red Clay Strays are prepared to take the world by storm as they reveal their “Moment of Truth” in the spring of 2022. So…How ‘Bout You Come On and join the ride?

SUMMARY:Generally exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Generally walks into the life of an Appalachian food desert — with elements of a home and the grocery store. A combination of written stories by journalist Xena Bunton and artwork by Appalachian creatives share conversations of poverty\, food insecurity\, traditions\, and acceptance in Appalachia. \nThe immersive exhibition\, funded by New Media Advocacy Project’s Appalachia Reframed cohort\, promotes sustainable journalism with recycled grocery items to showcase photographs and stories of Appalachians impacted from a food desert. A pop of yellow from a dollar store bag outlines experiences from real stories in the secluded areas of the region. \nSuzan Ann Morgan’s “affordable?” hand-dyed quilt is screen printed cotton with embroidery floss that features the five “dollar stores” within 20 minutes of her home. Questioning the ability to afford such hidden yet frequent stops\, artist Kelsie Tyson also addresses the comfort of feeding others with “J’eat yet?” fuzzy wall poem. Local potter Meghann Ferguson provides hope with functional fortune cookies that have inspired Appalachians to share what they want people to know about the region. \nDate/Time: Reception Saturday\, Oct. 22 1:45 – 4 p.m. \nExhibition Oct. 24-27 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
