SUMMARY:Animal Actions\, Human Reactions: Writing a Revolutionary Caribbean and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University will present “Animal Actions\, Human Reactions: Writing a Revolutionary Caribbean and Beyond\,” Friday\, April 15\, at 4 p.m. in Harris Hall 134. The free lecture will be presented by Dr. Charlton Yingling\, an assistant professor of history at the University of Louisville. \nYingling specializes in Latin American\, Caribbean\, and Atlantic history. His publications have examined race\, revolutions\, religiosity\, and animals’ influences upon human societies across the America from the sixteenth through the twentieth century. \nDr. Cicero Fain\, Marshall’s visiting diversity scholar\, says as an alum of Marshall\, Yingling is a great representation of the university. \n“Dr. Yingling makes Marshall proud\,” Fain said. “He is an accomplished historian whose research is innovative and provocative.” \nYingling’s lecture stems from a coauthored article\, “Slaves Hounds and Abolition in the Americas\,” which focuses on the role of canines in enforcing racial policies. \nHis first book\, “Siblings of Soil: Dominicans and Haitians in the Age of Revolutions” is built from extensive research in over two dozen archives in Spain\, the Dominican Republic\, Haiti\, the Vatican\, the United Kingdom and various other locations. The book is due out later this year from the University of Texas Press in Austin. \nDr. Chris White is a professor in Marshall’s Department of History. \n“Dr. Yingling’s research highlights the racialized uses of  ‘man’s best friend’ and the rise of modern capitalism\,” White said. \nYingling has a B.A. in history from Marshall in 2006\, an M.A. in Latin American studies from Vanderbilt University in 2009 and a Ph.D. in history from the University of South Carolina in 2016. \nThe lecture is sponsored by Marshall’s College of Liberal Arts\, Department of History and John Deaver Drinko Academy. The event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Japan at the Forefront of Global Demographic Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University’s Department of Modern Languages and Japanese Outreach Program will welcome Kenju Murakami\, Deputy Consul General Director of the Japan Information Center of the Consulate General of Japan in New York\, on Tuesday\, April 19. The lecture and panel discussion will begin at 4 p.m. in Drinko Library room 402 on Marshall’s Huntington campus. \nThe discussion\, titled “Japan at the Forefront of Global Demographic Challenges\,” will examine Japan’s increasing life expectancy and the good and bad demographic challenges it’s creating in Japan and around the world. Murakami and the subsequent panel discussion will focus on a number of topics including: \nHow is Japan trying to tap the potential of female workers?\nWill Japan open its labor market to foreign workers?\nAnd the latest news on Japan-U.S. relations. \nDr. Natsuki Anderson is the panel organizer and the chair of the Department of Modern Languages in the College of Liberal Arts. She says to be able to bring Murakami to campus is exciting. \n“When it comes to Japanese studies\, Marshall is a state leader\,” Anderson said. “I am thrilled to have a Japanese guest speaker from New York on Marshall’s campus again. Director Murakami gave two virtual presentations on the Japanese government and the Japan Exchange Teaching (JET) Program for MU students last year during the COVID-19 pandemic. I look forward to introducing Marshall students to him in person. The panel discussion will be exciting\, since all the Japanese faculty members from the Department of Modern Languages will be discussing the current issues of Japan’s demographic change. Please join us and take advantage of this opportunity to be able to ask intriguing questions.” \nMarshall leadership will also accompany Murakami on his visits to the West Virginia Department of Economic Development and Toyota West Virginia prior to visiting the Huntington campus. \nAnderson\, along with Dr. Zelideth Rivas\, a professor of Japanese\, and Ryan Lidster\, a Japanese instructor at Marshall\, will also be part of the discussion. The program will start at 4 p.m. with Murakami’s presentation and continue at 4:30 p.m. with the panel discussion and Q&A. For more information\, contact Anderson by e-mail at andersonn@marshall.edu.
