SUMMARY:TFA 2021 Emerging Artist Fellows Exhibition and Shifting Sediments
DESCRIPTION:The TFA 2021 Emerging Artist Fellows Exhibition will be on view Aug. 23 through Sept. 17 in the Charles W. and Norma C. Carroll Gallery\, located in the Visual Arts Center at 927 3rd Ave. in downtown Huntington. \nThis exhibition features the work of six artists selected by Tamarack Foundation for the Arts (TFA) Emerging Artist Fellowships for 2021. TFA Emerging Artist Fellows are early-career artists working in West Virginia who have been awarded a year of support and mentorship based on the quality of their work\, and who have demonstrated readiness to launch a sustainable career. \nThis year’s fellows are Brandy Jefferys (Cabell County)\, Suzan Ann Morgan (Upshur County)\, Emily Prentice (Randolph County)\, Kelsie Tyson (Greenbrier County)\, Nichole Westfall (Kanawha County) and Blake Wheeler (Kanawha County). \n“The artists in this group are painters\, fiber artists\, muralists\, ceramists\, photographers\, activists and educators who are deeply committed to making positive contributions to the cultural fabric of West Virginia\,” said Gallery Director Jamie Platt of Marshall’s School of Art and Design. “Huntington residents visiting the exhibition will recognize colorful\, powerful ceramic and textile works by Marshall University alum Kelsie Tyson\, as well as Brandy Jefferys’ exuberant paintings of pepperoni rolls and sandwiches from Tudor’s Biscuit World. If not\, what are you even doing? Treat yourself to a trip to this exhibition.” \nThe public is invited to a closing reception from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Friday\, Sept. 17. The Carroll Gallery’s hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. \nAll School of Art and Design events are free and open to the public. For more information and to find out about the gallery hours\, navigate to the website https://www.marshall.edu/art-galleries/ or call the School of Art and Design at 304-696-7299. For more information about the Tamarack Foundation for the Arts\, visit them on the web at www.TamarackFoundation.org. \nDue to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic\, all events are subject to change and visitors should call the School of Art and Design or check the website for up-to-date information. All visitors\, regardless of vaccination status\, will be required to wear masks in both galleries.

SUMMARY:Shifting Sediments
DESCRIPTION:Shifting Sediments opens in the Birke Art Gallery in Smith Hall Aug. 30 and remains on view through Sept. 30. Shifting Sediments juxtaposes the artworks of Caroline Hatfield\, Andrew Needle and Kathleen Thum\, all of whom focus on the material qualities of the earth beneath our feet. \nHatfield has constructed a river of glistening coal slag that empties into the center of the gallery\, illuminated by the soft orange glow of an industrial beacon light. Nearby on surrounding walls\, Thum’s skillfully rendered drawings of coal make a powerful connection to the river of slag\, highlighting coal’s visual/material qualities amongst the myriad social/economic/political ones. Rounding out the exhibition\, Needle’s close-up paintings illuminate the colors and textures of natural forms as transformed by time and exposure to the elements. \nVisitors to this exhibition are invited into a conversation about time\, transformation\, and meaning in relation to the land. The public is invited to a closing reception at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday\, Sept. 29. \nAll School of Art and Design events are free and open to the public. For more information and to find out about the gallery hours\, navigate to the website https://www.marshall.edu/art-galleries/ or call the School of Art and Design at 304-696-7299. \nDue to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic\, all events are subject to change and visitors should call the School of Art and Design or check the website for up-to-date information. All visitors\, regardless of vaccination status\, will be required to wear masks in both galleries.

Parkman Prize of the Society of American Historians as 2007’s best book on American history. \nSmith joined Marshall’s faculty after retiring from the University of Toronto\, where he taught for 35 years.  At Marshall\, Smith served as the John Marshall Professor of Political Science and was named a Drinko Fellow. Smith earned an A. Peck (2016). \nMüller\, the Roger Williams Straus Professor of Social Sciences at Princeton University\, will discuss the import and relevance of Smith’s first and last books: The Defense of Berlin\, published in 1963 and describing events that led to the building of the Berlin Wall\, and The Liberation of Paris: How Eisenhower\, de Gaulle\, and von Choltitz Saved the City of Light\, published in 2019.  Müller’s books include Democracy Rules (2021) and What is Populism? (2016)\, which has been translated into 25 languages.  He regularly writes for The Guardian and the London Review of Books. \nThe symposium is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Labor Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University will present a Labor Film Festival at 6 p.m. Thursday\, Sept. 2\, at the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center.  It is free and open to all. \nViewers can experience labor-focused films from central Appalachia that highlight the struggles\, successes\, and daily lives of workers. This one-night Labor Film Festival is part of the Battle of Blair Mountain Centennial Events commemoration\, in partnership with the Mine Wars Museum. \n“This film festival was open to all filmmakers from central Appalachia in hopes of providing an opportunity to highlight original stories about labor from within the region\,” said Tijah Bumgarner\, assistant professor of video production in the College of Arts and Media at Marshall. \nThe evening concludes with a screening of “The Revolutionist: Eugene V. Debs” and a panel discussion with Allison Duerk\, director of the Eugene V. Debs Museum\, and historian Mark Haworth\, a Debs Museum board member.  Debs was a passionate labor leader\, progressive political figure\, and a formidable speaker in a time of great change in the United States. \nThe Battle of Blair Mountain\, which took place in August of 1921\, marked its place in history as the largest armed uprising in the United States\, other than the Civil War. The United Mine Workers of America and coal mining families in southern West Virginia rose to fight the mine owners for the injustices they had suffered as part of their employment\, which denied them many of the civil rights that were given to citizens elsewhere in the country. \nThe five-day battle took place near the border of Boone and Logan counties\, after union member miners took on the Logan County sheriff\, state police\, the state militia\, and coal company employees who had gathered to stop the miners from entering Logan County. Over 100 miners and some 20 anti-union men were killed in the battle. Learn more about the Battle of Blair Mountain at www.blair100.com. \n“Too often our stories are told from an outsider’s perspective. The Battle of Blair Mountain Centennial is an opportunity to make new connections and develop new narratives by\, with\, and for our people\,” said Kenzie New Walker\, director of the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum. “The Blair Film Festival puts these proud\, working-class stories back into the hands of Appalachians and front-and-center.” \nFor the centennial commemoration\, representatives from the Mine Wars Museum and community organizations across West Virginia and Appalachia\, along with committed individual volunteers\, have developed a series of interactive and interpretive activities to be held throughout 2021 in counties across West Virginia. The culmination is a main event over Labor Day Weekend\, Sept. 4-6\, 2021. A schedule of events can be found on the official website at www.blair100.com/events. \nThe film festival event is sponsored by the Marshall’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications and Video Production Program in the College of Arts and Media\, the Mine Wars Museum\, and the Battle of Blair Mountain Centennial\, with support from the West Virginia Humanities Council. \nMasks will be required for the event.
