Carroll Gallery\, located in the Visual Arts Center at 927 3rd Ave. The exhibition breathes new life into discarded denim\, with which Arendt has created portraits exploring the intersections of labor\, industry and human narratives.  \n“Arendt’s unique ability to transform an everyday\, accessible fabric into extraordinary portraits challenges our perceptions of material and leaves us with a desire to know more about the people portrayed in the works\,” Gallery Director Courtney Chapman said. \nArendt is an associate professor of visual arts and gallery director at Coastal Carolina University. He received his master’s in fine arts from the University of Carolina and continues to exhibit his work nationally and internationally.

SUMMARY:The American Countess to Visit Huntington
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Area Convention & Visitors Bureau invites the community to welcome The American Countess Riverboat to Huntington on Friday\, August 18\, for the afternoon. This will be the third and final visit for this year. \nChristened in 2020\, the sternwheeler takes the best features of a riverboat paddle wheeler in a contemporary design. The fourth paddlewheel cruise ship to join the American Queen Steamboat Company (now American Queen Voyages) fleet launched on the Mississippi River at the start of the 2020 season. Built from an existing ship hull\, the American Countess underwent reconstruction\, including being lengthened by 60 feet. \nThe Countess will arrive around 10:30 to 11 am Friday morning. This particular voyage will begin in Pittsburgh and conclude in Louisville. Other stops will include Wheeling\, WV; Marietta\, Ohio; Augusta\, KY; Cincinnati; and Madison\, Indiana. \nThe boat will depart around 5 p.m. that same day. \nCompton encourages anyone who may encounter any of the passengers to give them a warm welcome. He also noted that people are welcome to come down to the riverfront to see the boat and take pictures.

DESCRIPTION:The Hilltop Book Fair will take place on Saturday\, Aug. 19\, 2023\, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday\, Aug. 20\, 2023\, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Huntington Museum of Art. Hilltop Book Fair is a fundraiser for the Huntington Museum of Art. Admission is $5 on Saturday\, Aug. 19\, and free on Sunday\, Aug. 20. \nVolunteers and HMA staff members sort and arrange the used books by categories prior to Hilltop Book Fair. Book prices on Saturday\, Aug. 19\, will be $2 for each paperback book and $3 for each hardcover book. On Sunday\, Aug. 20\, from noon to 5 p.m. you can fill a box with books for $10. HMA will provide the boxes for this special deal. \n
