Morris is the author of Lost Girls\, a short story collection\, and Surrender\, a poetry chapbook. Her fiction has appeared in Shenandoah\, Antioch Review\, Notre Dame Review\, South Carolina Review\, Fiction Southeast\, Santa Fe Literary Review\, and Upstreet\, among other journals. \nMeredith Sue Willis is a writer and teacher and enthusiastic reader. Born and raised in West Virginia\, she is a proud member of the Appalachian Renaissance with deep roots in West Virginia and the western mountain counties of Virginia. Her books have been published by Charles Scribner’s Sons\, HarperCollins\, Ohio University Press\, Mercury House\, West Virginia University Press\, Monteymayor Press\, Teachers & Writers Press\, Hamilton Stone Editions\, and others. She teaches at New York University. \nThe “Writers Can Read” open mic night reading series takes place on the third Monday of each month (all year) from 7:00-8:30 in Huntington\, WV. This month it will again take place virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event features two award-winning\, published authors that serve as “featured readers” who begin the event each month. DESCRIPTION:Marshall University’s School of Music invites all high school band members and teachers to participate in a free online version of the Marshall University Honor Band. This year’s event will be online Friday\, March 26\, with the theme “Reconnecting.” \nThe virtual Marshall Honor Band event will feature special guest Robert W. Smith\, renowned composer and educator. Participants will rehearse Smith’s new piece\, “Portals\,” in a live\, virtual setting and attend sessions with Marshall band directors and master classes with Marshall faculty. \nStudents will then submit recordings of themselves playing “Portals.” The recordings will be edited together and premiere online in a special Marshall Bands concert that will be shared on the School of Music’s YouTube channel. \nRegistration for the Honor Band is free and can be accessed at www.marshall.edu/band/honorband. \nThe event is sponsored by the School of Music in the College of Arts and Media.

The event will have the theme “Pencil\, Paper\, Disk\, Drive: Crossing the Composing Rainbow.” \nThe keynote address will be given by Dr. Troy Hicks\, professor of literacy and technology at Central Michigan University\, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday\, March 27. He will speak on “Making Remote Learning Matter: Engaging Our Students and Building Their Digital Literacies.” Hicks focuses his work on the teaching of writing\, literacy and technology\, as well as teacher education and professional development. He blogs at Digital Writing\, Digital Teaching. \nAs we continue an academic year that will be unlike any other\, our goals for remote learning must be guided by empathy and care\, and an intentional focus on engagement\, all while building students’ digital literacies\,” Hicks said. “Throughout\, we will discuss what it is that we value about learning\, and how to translate that into meaningful remote opportunities for our students.” \nSaturday’s program will also include about 20 presentations or panel discussions from which attendees may choose\, on topics such as integrating reading and writing\, art-inspired writing or video tools. \nOn Sunday\, March 28\, the conference will feature West Virginia authors Cat Pleska\, Kathy Manley and Laura Bentley as they read aloud from their works beginning at 1 p.m. \nOn Friday\, March 26\, sessions for Marshall University undergraduate students in education will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. Elementary school preservice teachers will be led by Gregory House and middle/high school preservice teachers will be led by Abby Waldorf and Allyson Perry.
