SUMMARY:Writers Can Read: Tribute to Carter Taylor Seaton
DESCRIPTION:Carter Taylor Seaton was one of the most influential and gifted writers to come not only from Huntington\, but from the entire state of West Virginia. Writers Can Read would not exist without her\, and many of us who have found success in this field owe our paths to her guidance. Even though it has been a year and a half since her passing\, the void she left is still felt across the tri-state area. But  this will not be a somber evening! It will be a celebration of one of the most remarkable people to ever grace our lives. Please join us as Bonnie Proudfoot\, Amber Koch\, and M. Lynn Squires headline the evening\, keeping Carter’s spirit shining as bright as it ever did.

SUMMARY:Arsenic & Old Lace at Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:ALCHEMY THEATRE PRESENTS the classic comedy of the American theatre – ARSENIC & OLD LACE by Joseph Kesselring!\n\nPoisoners never go out of style – this timeless hit tells the story of two otherwise charming elderly ladies determined to get rid of all their lonely lodgers in the name of mercy.\nDrama critic Mortimer Brewster’s engagement announcement is upended when he discovers a corpse in his elderly aunts’ window seat. Mortimer rushes to tell Abby and Martha before they stumble upon the body themselves\, only to learn that the two old women aren’t just aware of the dead man in their parlor\, they killed him! Between his aunts’ penchant for poisoning wine\, a brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt\, and another brother using plastic surgery to hide from the police – not to mention Mortimer’s own hesitancy about marriage – it’ll be a miracle if Mortimer makes it to his wedding. Arsenic and Old Lace is a classic dark comedy about the only thing more deadly than poison: family.\n\nArsenic and Old Lace premiered on Broadway at the Fulton Theatre on January 10\, 1941. It was produced by the renowned duo of Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse\, and directed by Bretaigne Windust. The original Broadway cast included Jean Adair\, Josephine Hull\, Allyn Joslyn and Boris Karloff. Frank Capra’s 1944 film adaptation of the play starred Cary Grant\, with Adair and Hull reprising their performances as Mortimer’s murderous aunts.\n\n**OPENING NIGHT!** – Stay afterward as our guest for our opening night champagne toast!\n\nAll seating is limited and general admission. SUMMARY:For the Hope of It All: Mixed Media Works by Kevin Allison
DESCRIPTION:ReCreate Appalachia presents an incredible Recovery Month exhibition featuring mixed media works by Kevin Allison.\n“For the Hope of It All” opens in the Turret Gallery of West Edge Factory during our September First Saturday Art Market. Come check out the exhibition\, then enjoy the food\, music\, and art vendors at the market!\nKevin will be on site from 2-4 pm for a meet and greet!\nArtist Statement by Kevin Allison:\nI was born and raised in the Chemical Valley of West Virginia. My father was manufacturing Agent Orange at the Monsanto plant in Nitro when I came along\, and I attended a high school with walls that sealed airtight in case of a chemical leak. Nitro and the surrounding areas are known as the “Chemical Valley” for its massive production of explosives\, chemicals\, and propellants. This was my childhood playground. It may be that my views on nature and life in general are vaguely skewed by this environmentally exciting upbringing. At the very least\, I still have a continuing love affair with the color orange.\nI’m a lifelong West Virginia resident\, and a Marshall University School of Fine Arts graduate\, with a focus in studio painting. In my brand of storytelling\, I combine multiple techniques to explore our culture. I use unconventional materials such as encaustic paint\, cold wax and found objects in my collages. In the fashion of our forebears (and other fauna)\, I cobble together a little bit of this\, and a little bit of that. Sometimes a lot more of that.\nMy assemblages explore the complexities of our Appalachian lives\, one layer at a time. I like to think I’m creating unique monuments to life in our wild and wonderful state.\nI’ve always had a sensibility for seeing beauty in decay. I’m surrounded by hollers\, relics\, and ghost towns. There’s discarded treasures all over the hard ground. I choose to utilize those discarded bits because I feel there’s a spirituality and a constant truth present in the things we choose to leave behind. I have found great inspiration in forgotten spaces.\nDuring my years of homelessness and active addiction\, I kept a journal and sketchbook. In 2023\, my recovery began\, and I utilized those items as inspiration for a new series of work.\n“For the Hope of it All” is a visual representation of my journey through homelessness and addiction.

SUMMARY:Docent Open House at Huntington Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art is offering a free informational Docent Open House on Tuesday\, Sept. 8\, 2026\, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for those who are interested in becoming volunteer art and nature tour guides. Light refreshments will be served.\n\n“If you think you would like to share your appreciation for art and nature with visitors of all ages to the Huntington Museum of Art\, then Docent Open House is for you\,” said HMA Director of Education Cindy Dearborn. “Docents give tours of our exhibits and nature trails. No previous experience in giving tours is necessary and all docents are thoroughly trained and supported by HMA staff members.”\n\nDocents gather on Monday mornings at the Huntington Museum of Art during the fall and spring for informal art training sessions with the staff members of HMA’s Education Department. “It would not be possible for the Huntington Museum of Art to provide the number of tours that we do without our docents\,” Dearborn said. “Lasting friendships have been formed by many of our volunteer docents. Being a docent is so rewarding when you see students and adults enjoying their visits to the Huntington Museum of Art.”\n\nFor questions about the docent program or other education programs at HMA\, call Dearborn at (304) 529-2701 or send her an email at cdearborn@hmoa.org.

SUMMARY:Ashley's Fiction Book Club at Booktenders
DESCRIPTION:A Good Hard Look by Ann Napolitano \nForced by illness to leave behind a successful life in New York\, literary icon Flannery O’Connor has returned to her family farm in the small town of Milledgeville\, Georgia. With her health and time both limited\, all she wants is to be left alone to write. \nBut Flannery’s plans are soon upended by Melvin Whiteson\, a banker from Manhattan who has recently married the town belle. Melvin is at loose ends with his new life; though he has every opportunity\, he’s not sure where to begin. Flannery knows exactly what she wants\, but is running out of time. Through their unusual and clandestine friendship\, both will come to reflect on the decisions they have made and the paths they have chosen. \nLiterary history and fiction gracefully intersect in this emotionally charged novel of small town Southern life from one of our most beloved novelists\, which asks us all to consider how we can live our lives to the fullest.
