SUMMARY:Huntington Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Kennel Club’s All Breed Dog Show Obedience and Rally Trials will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday\, July 6-7\, at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena. Admission is free both days\, and this will be the Kennel Club’s 103rd and 104th shows\, on Saturday and Sunday\, respectively. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners. 559 dogs will participate in Saturday’s show\, with 529 returning Sunday. A raffle will also take place during the dog show\, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday only\, and proceeds are donated to the Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter. Items to be raffled off include a flat screen television and gift cards. \nThe dog show will begin with males and females of each breed competing\, with winners moving onto the group competition. The groups are sporting\, hound\, working\, terrier\, toy\, non-sporting and herding groups. Eight judges will preside over the dog show.

SUMMARY:Workshop on Memoir
DESCRIPTION:A nationally known authority on memoir as a literary genre and on the writing of memoirs\, Thomas Larson of San Diego\, Calif.\, will hold two events in Huntington July 5-6.\nLarson will sign copies of his books\, “The Memoir and the Memoirst” and “Spirituality and the Writer: A Personal Inquiry” at the Red Caboose Gift Shop in Heritage Station on Memorial Drive from 2 to 5 p.m.\, Friday July 5.\nThe following morning Larson will conduct a three-hour workshop for people of all skill levels in conceptualizing\, drafting and publishing life-based stories. The workshop will be held at First Presbyterian Church\, 1015 Fifth Avenue from 9:30 am. To 12:30 p.m.\nPublishers Place\, Inc.\, a Huntington-based 501-c-3 not-for-profit publisher\, will host the memoir-writing workshop. John Patrick Grace\, executive director\, will introduce Larson and also be available to add insights.\nGrace has led 59 sessions since 2001 of The Life Writing Class\, at venues in West Virginia\, Ohio and Kentucky. Similarly Larson has led memoir-writing classes in the San Diego area for over a decade. He has also been a staff writer for The San Diego Reader for the past 20 years.\nHe also has taught nonfiction writing at San Diego City College and in the MFA program at Ashland University (Ohio).\nHe is himself the author of a work of personal recollection: “The Sanctuary of Illness: A Memoir of Heart Disease.”\nIn his workshop Larson will challenge participants to confront questions such as “Is memory reliable?” “How can one uncover the truth about one’s own self and life events?” “What makes a reader want to pick up a memoir and dive into it?”\nTo preregister or for further information contact Publishers Place at 304-617-1292 or email publishersplace@gmail.com \nWorkshop is $55 at the door or $45 if preregistered. A drum circle\, hosted by First Congregational United Church of Christ\, will welcome all-comers on the Heritage Station patio. Inside the Visitors Center\, Huntington Fiction Factory will host local author Eliot Parker who will present “Becoming the Extroverted-Introverted: Promoting Yourself and Your Work”. Sweets by Sunny will set up in the Visitors Center lobbying selling their delicious macarons. Local artists Tanessa Blankenship and Ron Haeberle will premiere solo exhibitions at Moonlight Cookies and Sip Wine & Whiskey Bar respectively. Try your own hand at art at Full Circle Gifts and Goods and create your own ceramic tile (cost is $25 per tile). Four local authors\, Sarah Dooley\, Marie Manilla\, Sheila Redling\, and Carter Taylor Seaton will showcase their other artistic endeavors at The Red Caboose. Henna Envy of Ashland will offer henna tattoos as The Haute Wick Social. Meanwhile\, crooner Alex Blankenship Music will perform on Taps at Heritage’s patio. Let’s Eat\, Sip\, Moonlight Cookies\, and Taps will be open for delicious food and beverage options.
