SUMMARY:She Kills Monsters
DESCRIPTION:She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister\, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook\, however\, she finds herself catapulted into a journey of discovery and action‐packed adventure in the imaginary world that was her sister’s refuge. In this high‐octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies\, nasty ogres\, and 90s pop culture\, acclaimed playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart‐pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all. \n$20 at the door | $15 for Seniors 60+ and Employees | Marshall University students admitted FREE with a valid ID.

SUMMARY:Huntington Museum of Art to Exhibit the Work of Stan Sporny
DESCRIPTION:Teach Them to Dream: The Art & Influence of Stan Sporny will be on view at the Huntington Museum of Art from Sept. 10 through Dec. 30\, 2022. A free opening reception for this exhibit takes place on Friday\, Sept. 9\, 2022\, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at HMA. \nStan Sporny (American\, 1946-2008) was an accomplished professional artist and an inspiring Marshall University professor\, passionately dedicated to helping his students achieve success. He aimed to revolutionize oil painting with his brand of non-toxic solvents and mediums: “The Sporny Solution.” \nBorn in Philadelphia\, Sporny could remember wanting to be an artist by age eleven. He attended the Philadelphia College of Art from 1964 to 1968 and the University of Pennsylvania from 1969 to 1972\, where he studied under noted artists such as Neil Welliver\, Red Grooms\, Alex Katz\, Alice Neel\, and Elaine de Kooning. During the summer of 1972\, he was sponsored by Katz to attend the prestigious Skowhegan School in Maine. That same year he received an Albright Scholarship to study in Sri Lanka\, where he resided for nine years. Sporny taught at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge from 1987 to 1988 before becoming a beloved educator at Marshall University for the rest of his life. He received a Federal Art-in-Architecture Grant in 1993 to create 12 paintings that were installed in the Veterans Hospital in Huntington\, West Virginia.

SUMMARY:USS LST-325 docked at the Port of Ashland
DESCRIPTION:The LST 325\, a 328-foot-long Landing Ship Tank\, will docked at Port of Ashland and available for individual and group tours September 15-18\, 2022 from 9 AM to 5:00  PM. \nThese ships could carry twenty Sherman tanks in the giant hold within the ship. They were the only ships ever made that could go anywhere in the world and deposit their cargo onto a hostile beach and then go get another load. On the main deck they could also carry 30-40 trucks\, tons of fuels\, ammunition or supplies and soldiers. The LSTs were used during World War II\, Korea\, and the Vietnam conflicts. This ship\, LST 325\, was in the invasion at Omaha Beach on D-Day\, June 6\, 1944. It was also at Sicily on July 10\, 1943. \nThe LST 325 was one of the first to be built and it is the only operational LST in the United States. It was built in Philadelphia\, PA by the U.S. Navy Shipyard. Other ships were built on the Illinois River at Seneca\, IL\, on the Ohio River at two shipyards in Pittsburgh\, in Jeffersonville and Evansville\, IN. Hundreds of these ships sailed on the rivers on their way to the Gulf of Mexico and to WWII. These shipyards were able to complete a ship every five days. Workers\, welders\, and equipment installers then boarded these vessels and completed the ship while it was enroute down the Mississippi River. 1\,051 LSTs were built in a little over three years. The United States never lost an invasion once the LSTs were designed\, produced\, and could land the big tanks right on the beach. \n  \nThe City of Ashland and their citizens are planning big celebrations for the entire time LST 325 will be in the area with tours of the ship by the crew as well as other festivities. This is truly a piece of United States history. \nReserve a spot HERE

SUMMARY:Rong Wang Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Rong Wang invites the community to debut art exhibition at the heritage station Huntington WV in September 16th 2022 \nRong Wang is an internationally trained artist who’s well known in Asia. She has received many awards for her artwork to include the best in show watercolor in the Asia Pacific art show in 2016. The beauty in the mist collection was inspired from a trip to West Virginia. While driving through the hills and forests she saw incredible images through the morning and evening mists. After stopping to see such beauty she felt as if she was part of a beautiful painting. She decided to use water color to record these scenes. Many of these scenes are the same area but show how with different lighting and different moods make each a unique experience. Sometimes it’s quiet and peaceful\, sometimes it’s bright and happy\, it could be dark and sad also could be enthusiasm and passion. Each painting is an incredible view but with her spirit in them. \nRong has recently moved to West Virginia to fully experience the energy and beauty that exists here. At this exhibit she is excited to share the her appreciation of what of the beauty in the mist of West Virginia. \nThe event is free to all on September 16th 12-5 at heritage station Huntington. At the end of the event we will have a gift drawing.
