SUMMARY:Music from the Era of John Marshall
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University’s School of Music will celebrate music from the time of John Marshall during a trio recital performed by faculty at 7:30 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 31\, in Studio 143 of Smith Music Hall.\nThe recital is free and open to the public.\nPerforming will be Dr. Wendell Dobbs playing flute\, Dr. Stephen Lawson playing horn and Dr. Kay Lawson playing bassoon.  They’ll present music from the 18th century using historical instruments and performance techniques. The recital will include works by F. J. Haydn\, Carl Stamitz\, Adam Emmert and Anton Reicha.\n“Performing music on instruments for which they were written allows performers and their audience a window into realizing how music sounded in the time of a composer\,” Stephen Lawson\, who is coordinator of Graduate Studies in the School of Music\, said. “As Marshall University endeavors to appreciate the contributions of John Marshall\, we seek to realize music composed and performed during his lifetime (1755-1835).”\nThe trio has been performing together on 18th century instruments in orchestra\, woodwind quintets\, quartets and now trios for several years.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Keller Williams
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 8 pm with show starting at 10 pm. Admission is $22 in advance and $25 at the door Ages 18+. For full band bios\, visit www.vclublive.com.\nWilliams’ solo live shows–and his ability to improvise to his determinedly quirky tunes despite the absence of an actual band–quickly became the stuff of legend\, and his audience grew exponentially when word spread about this exciting\, unpredictable performer. Once he began releasing recordings\, starting with 1994’s FREEK\, Williams was embraced by an even wider community of music fans\, particularly the jam band crowd. While his live gigs have largely been solo affairs\, Williams has nearly always used his albums as a forum for collaborations with fellow musicians. An alliance with The String Cheese Incident on 1999’s BREATHE marked Williams’ first release on the band’s label SCI Fidelity Records\, DREAM\, Keller’s 2007 release\, found him in the company of such iconic musicians as the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir\, banjo master Béla Fleck\, bass great Victor Wooten\, American musician/poet Michael Franti and many others.

SUMMARY:Creat(i've) Made Poetry
DESCRIPTION:These workshops are intended to help encourage pre-teens & teens to tell their story\, not for an audience\, but for individual self expression and reflection. Harnessing creative literary techniques\, we will use short stories\, poetry\, or simple scattered words to share our hearts on paper. The goal isn’t to create something that is perceived as “pretty”\, but rather to build our strengths\, giving life and light to the emotions and sensations that we are often conditioned to hide inside of ourselves.\nWorkshops are organized and lead by West Virginia native poet and writer\, Melissa Clark.\nSliding scale in effect\, suggested donation of $12 per child. Parental attendance is optional. Light snacks provided.\nFor questions and more information please call (304) 710-1143
