SUMMARY:Underground Railroad Historian Chris Saunders
DESCRIPTION:Underground Railroad Historian Chris Saunders will discuss the critical history of our region in The Underground Railroad\, the Civil War and our contributions to abolition and reconstruction. . Saunders is researching Ceredo’s connections with Underground Railroad conductors and safe houses in Burlington and South Point\, Ohio. He will also display some of his Underground Railroad and Civil War artifacts\, including some specifically related to slavery and the Underground Railroad. Saunders is the co-author of the article “Burlington 37 Cemetery” in Tri-State Living (2012). Saunders was contacted by PBS to help research the family history of nine-time Grammy winning R&B singer John Legend for the show Finding Your Roots\, which led him to the Polley family\, who after legally obtaining their freedom were kidnapped and held captive in Wayne County\, Virginia. After the show aired\, his research helped obtain a retroactive finding of freedom for the Polley children in the Wayne County (West Virginia) Circuit Court after 162 years\, a legal conclusion to the longest active fugitive slave case in U.S. history.\nHe has portrayed Underground Railroad conductor Jim Ditcher in the Ironton Woodland Cemetery Ghost Walk. He also has made presentations at The WV Cultural Center and to local schools\, historical societies\, and other groups. Free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:The Sarah Denman Faces of Appalachia Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating Tijah Bumgarner’s work! \nAbout:\nNaming and narratives have mapped the region of Appalachia as a place apart\, but as the physical landscape shifts away from coal\,\nso too does the cultural landscape. The diverse stories of black\, queer and other identity cultures have been here all along\, but what can hopefully happen within the economic\, cultural shift\, will be these narratives taking center stage\, as opposed to the minimal side\nstory throughout Appalachia’s past. What are the stories that students can tell? How can they tell them? What does it mean for them to tell their stories? In the economic\, cultural shift\, this gap remains a space to not necessarily rewrite history\, but to discuss the ways in which this history is taken up and reevaluated in the present.

It focuses on two couples\, Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Benjamin and Phyllis Rogers Stone\, who are attending the reunion. Sally and Phyllis were showgirls in the Follies. Both couples are deeply unhappy with their marriages. Buddy\, a traveling salesman\, is having an affair with a girl on the road; Sally is still as much in love with Ben as she was years ago; and Ben is so self-absorbed that Phyllis feels emotionally abandoned. Several of the former showgirls perform their old numbers\, sometimes accompanied by the ghosts of their former selves. The musical numbers in the show have been interpreted as pastiches of the styles of the leading Broadway composers of the 1920s and ’30s\, and sometimes as parodies of specific songs. \nThe Broadway production opened on April 4\, 1971\, directed by Harold Prince and Michael Bennett\, and with choreography by Bennett. The musical was nominated for eleven Tony Awards and won seven. The original production ran for over 500 performances. The musical has had a number of major revivals\, and several of its songs have become standards\, including “Broadway Baby”\, “I’m Still Here”\, “Too Many Mornings”\, “Could I Leave You?”\, and “Losing My Mind”.
