SUMMARY:West Virginia Pumpkin Festival
DESCRIPTION:Since 1986 West Virginia Pumpkin Park in Milton has celebrated the glory of autumn and  the harvest with the West Virginia Pumpkin Festival\, which has turned into one of the state’s largest fests. The festival was designed to help farmers with the raising and selling of pumpkins. Located in Milton\, WV\, between the two cities of Huntington and Charleston\, along the I-64 corridor\, the festival attracts attention from throughout the region.  Each October\, more than 50\,000 people travel to Milton to participate in our celebration of the pumpkin harvest.\nThe festival hosts a cultural array of activities for the entire family to enjoy.  In addition to over 100 skilled artisans who display juried crafts\, numerous special exhibits and demonstrations are presented throughout the festival.  Master craftsmen share their expertise in areas such as blacksmithing\, pottery making\, quilting and woodworking\, a mountain men encampment\, and lots of old-time demonstrations like sorghum making\, and much more\, along with many business booths.\nFestival dates are Oct 4th\, 5th\, & 6th from 9am – 9pm\, and Oct 7th from 9am – 6pm. DESCRIPTION:Since 1986 West Virginia Pumpkin Park in Milton has celebrated the glory of autumn and  the harvest with the West Virginia Pumpkin Festival\, which has turned into one of the state’s largest fests. The festival was designed to help farmers with the raising and selling of pumpkins. Located in Milton\, WV\, between the two cities of Huntington and Charleston\, along the I-64 corridor\, the festival attracts attention from throughout the region.  Each October\, more than 50\,000 people travel to Milton to participate in our celebration of the pumpkin harvest.\nThe festival hosts a cultural array of activities for the entire family to enjoy.  In addition to over 100 skilled artisans who display juried crafts\, numerous special exhibits and demonstrations are presented throughout the festival.  Master craftsmen share their expertise in areas such as blacksmithing\, pottery making\, quilting and woodworking\, a mountain men encampment\, and lots of old-time demonstrations like sorghum making\, and much more\, along with many business booths.\nFestival dates are Oct 4th\, 5th\, & 6th from 9am – 9pm\, and Oct 7th from 9am – 6pm. Learn”\nPARKING: Parking will be prohibited on 4th Avenue between 7th Street and Hal Greer Boulevard from 5 p.m. until after the parade.\nROAD CLOSURES: 4th Avenue between 7th Street and Hal Greer Boulevard will be closed from 5 p.m. until after the parade. \n\nPARADE LINEUP: Parade participants will be asked to line up beginning at 6 p.m. between 12th Street and Hal Greer Boulevard.\nPARADE ROUTE: The parade will begin at 7 p.m. at 12th Street and 4th Avenue and proceed west on 4th Avenue to 8th Street.\nRULES: In the interest of safety\, parade participants will be prohibited from throwing candy. However\, a representative for each parade participant will be allowed to walk along the sides of the street and hand out candy to children.

DESCRIPTION:Marshall University’s Amicus Curiae Lecture Series will continue its Fall 2018 series with a presentation by veteran investigative journalist Charles Lewis\, speaking on the topic of “Twist and Shout: Public Discourse\, Political Dysfunction and Democracy in America.” He will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday\, Oct. 9\, at Brad D. Smith Foundation Hall on Marshall’s Huntington campus. Lewis will discuss the importance of having an informed American public to maintain a healthy democracy\, and the challenges that arise when so many facts are considered debatable or matters of opinion.\nLewis is a tenured professor of journalism and founding executive director of the Investigative Reporting Workshop at the American University School of Communication in Washington. He is a former producer for ABC News and CBS News 60 Minutes and founder of two Pulitzer Prize-winning news organizations\, the Center for Public Integrity\, which has earned more than 30 national journalism awards\, and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists\, a global network of leading investigative reporters developing online pieces that cross borders.\nLewis also is the author of 935 Lies: The Future of Truth and the Decline of America’s Moral Integrity. He received the MacArthur Fellowship in 2004 and\, in 2018\, was the recipient of the I.F. Stone Medal of Independence in Journalism from Harvard University’s Nieman Foundation.\nThe Amicus Curiae Lecture Series is free and open to the public\, with sponsorship from the Simon Perry Center for Constitutional Democracy and additional support from the West Virginia Humanities Council.
