DESCRIPTION:Marshall University invites the community to a Herd Holiday throughout the month of December. The event\, which is usually hosted at Marshall University’s Memorial Student Center\, will be hosted virtually via Marshall’s website this year. \nThe annual event features contests\, performances\, book readings\, recipes\, Marshall University Athletics challenges\, Marco’s Favorite Things\, a 24-day giveaway and more. The event is sponsored by Marshall’s Office of University Communications. \n“This year we had to look at things a little differently making Herd Holiday a virtual event\,” said Mallory Jarrell\, director of branding and trademarks at Marshall. “We hope that the Marshall family can enjoy these fun activities from the comfort of their own homes to get into the holiday spirit.” \nHerd Holiday is hosted via www.marshall.edu/herdholiday and is available from Tuesday\, Dec. 1\, until Thursday\, Dec. 31. \nOnce on the website\, users can navigate tabs\, which include a holiday book reading by Marshall University President Jerome Gilbert\, recipes\, holiday craft tutorials\, performances by local dance and musical groups\, Herd Men’s Basketball activities and contests to win prizes\, such as an exclusive socially-distanced holiday photography session with Marshall mascot\, Marco. \nVisitors can also download customizable holiday greeting cards and cast a vote in the campus gingerbread decorating contest\, sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs. \nFor more information and to participate in this year’s virtual Herd Holiday\, visit www.marshall.edu/herdholiday.

DESCRIPTION:The Village of Lights will open to the public Thursday\, December 3rd at 6 PM. The driving tour will be open from 6 PM to 10 PM every Thursday through Sunday in the month of December!  \nPlease note the following traffic patterns that we will be following: \n\n\n\n-All traffic will enter the park from the main entrance\, which is accessed from College Ave. The GPS address is 491 Park Road.\n-Traffic will continue along Park Road just past the Little League complex\, and then turn right onto Deer Run Road.\n-Traffic will continue along Deer Run Road all the way to the Soccer Complex. Traffic will cross the bridge and take a right at the stop sign. At the second stop sign\, all the traffic will be exiting onto 4H Camp Road.\n-Traffic will be one way only for the entire light tour.

DESCRIPTION:This Monday\, December 21 at 7 P.M\, Writers Can Read will host its fifth virtual reading event held during the current COVID-19 pandemic. It will feature Appalachian writers Carter Sickles and Charles Lloyd reading selections from their work\, and an open mic session for anyone who would like to share their prose or poetry with the audience or ask questions of the authors. This virtual event will be hosted on Zoom and the event ID and password information will be made available at https://www.facebook.com/WritersCanRead immediately prior to the event. \nCarter Sickles is the author of the novel The Prettiest Star\, published by Hub City Press (2020). His debut novel The Evening Hour (Bloomsbury 2012)\, an Oregon Book Award finalist and a Lambda Literary Award finalist\, was adapted into a feature film that premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Carter is the recipient of the 2013 Lambda Literary Emerging Writer Award\, and earned fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, and MacDowell. \nCharles Lloyd is a retired Classics professor emeritus at Marshall University who has published on ancient Greek “sexuality” and rural and urban attitudes in ancient Greek literature\, and on the poets Euripedes and Vergil. He is also a pianist and singer who performs at special events in various venues. He co-authored the biography of a 1920s pop singer Ruth Etting: America’s Forgotten Sweetheart (2010). The Walls of Sparta\, is his first novel. \nThe “Writers Can Read” open mic night reading series takes place on the third Monday of each month (all year) from 7:00-8:30 in Huntington\, WV. This month it will again take place virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event features two award-winning\, published authors that serve as “featured readers” who begin the event each month. Previous featured readers have included: Marc Harshman\, Denise Giardina\, Crystal Wilkinson\, Jonathan Corcoran\, Doug Van Gundy\, Robert Gipe\, Nick White\, and others. DESCRIPTION:Huntington area churches are uniting and inviting members of our community to enjoy an outdoor celebration of Christmas. The citywide ONE Tour (Outdoor Nativity Exhibits) will feature scenes that will be sure to get your family into the spirit of the season. \n\nThe displays will showcase various images in celebration of the birth of the Christ Child during Advent season.
