DESCRIPTION:This month’s Writers Can Read series will feature novelists Joanie Ward Smith and Lee Martin. The event is free and open to the public and will take place on Monday\, January 16 at 7 P.M. in Heritage Station at 210 11th Street in downtown Huntington. \nJoanie Ward Smith is an avid genealogy researcher who doesn’t stop until she uncovers the truth. In addition to her research and writing five books\, she is involved in community projects and artisan shows. Her latest novel is Whatever Happened to Uncle Henry? She lives in Huntington\, West Virginia with her husband\, Gabe\, and their little dog\, Sophie. \nLee Martin is the author of The Bright Forever\, a finalist for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction\, and six other novels. His latest is The Glassmaker’s Wife. He has also published four memoirs in addition to two short story collections. His fiction and nonfiction have appeared in many distinguished literary journals and anthologies. He is the winner of the Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Ohio Arts Council. He teaches in the MFA Program at The Ohio State University\, where he is a College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of English. \nThe “Writers Can Read” open mic night reading series takes place on the third Monday of each month (all year) from 7:00-8:30 in Heritage Station at 210 11th Street in downtown Huntington\, West Virginia. The event features two award-winning\, published authors that serve as “featured readers” to begin the event each month. Previous featured readers have included: Marc Harshman\, Denise Giardina\, Crystal Wilkinson\, Jonathan Corcoran\, Doug Van Gundy\, Robert Gipe\, Nick White\, and others. Afterwards\, the mic is open to anyone in the audience that would like to share a creative work. \n

DESCRIPTION:Friday night starting at 6pm enjoy “Short Attention Span Theater.” This fast\, fun night of theater will take audiences from the tender to the thrilling to the downright absurd. The audience will have the opportunity to give feedback to the authors\, as well as enjoying delicious tapas and drink specials from The Cellar Door. Featuring staged readings of original short works by Tyson Compton\, Audrey Stanton-Smith\, Eric Fritzius\, Nadia Legros\, Allison Fradkin\, Ian Nolte\, and the theater class of Huntington High. \nSaturday night starting at 6pm\, enjoy the short comedy\, “The Excursion” by Audrey Stanton-Smith followed by the premier reading of an original full length play\, “One Night in Venice” written by local authors Sheila Redling and Lulu Smith. The Cellar Door will have specialty themed cocktails for the evening as well as their full menu. \nFor the aspiring stage and screenwriters in the community\, there will be four free stage/screenwriting workshops on Saturday\, January 21 from noon to four pm at Heritage Station\, 210 11th Street\, Huntington. DESCRIPTION:Tone-Loc and Color Me Badd\nSaturday\, January 28\, 2023 | Doors 7pm | Show 8pm\nParamount Arts Center | Ashland\, KY\nTone-Loc (born Anthony Smith) soared from obscurity into pop stardom in 1989 when his hoarse voice and unmistakable delivery made the song “Wild Thing” (using a sample from Van Halen’s “Jamie’s Cryin'”) a massive hit. The song was co-written by Marvin Young\, better known as Young MC\, as was the second single smash\, “Funky Cold Medina.” The album Loc-ed After Dark became the second rap release ever to top the pop charts. Tone-Loc expanded his horizons into acting in 1992 and 1993\, appearing a\nfew times on the Fox sitcom Roc. He was also in the films Posse and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective\, and in 1991 returned to recording with Cool Hand Loc.\nColor Me Badd is an American contemporary R&B group that was formed in 1985 in Oklahoma City\, Oklahoma by Mark Calderon (born September 27\, 1970)\, Bryan Abrams (born November 16\, 1969)\, second tenor second tenor Sam Watters (born July 23\, 1970) and baritone Kevin Thornton (born June 17\, 1969). Color Me Badd broke up in 1998 before reuniting in 2010\, with various lineups since.
