DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art is offering a free informational Docent Open House on Tuesday\, Sept. 2\, 2025\, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for those who are interested in becoming volunteer art and nature tour guides. Light refreshments will be served.\n\n“Docents are volunteers who share their appreciation for art and nature with visitors of all ages at the Huntington Museum of Art\, which has a nature trail system on its 52 acres\,” said HMA Director of Education Cindy Dearborn. “If giving tours of our exhibits or nature trails sounds like something that appeals to you\, then come to Docent Open House and learn more about being a volunteer docent. No previous experience in giving tours is necessary and all docents are thoroughly trained and supported by HMA staff members.”\n\nDocents gather on Monday mornings at the Huntington Museum of Art during the fall and spring for informal art training sessions with the staff members of HMA’s Education Department. “The Huntington Museum of Art is able to provide the number of tours that we do because of our docents\,” Dearborn said. “Many of our volunteers have formed lasting friendships as part of our docent program. SUMMARY:MU School of Music Ravel Concert
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University’s School of Music will present a faculty recital entitled “Happy 150th Birthday Maurice Ravel” both on and off campus. \nThe concert will feature Dr. Kamerhan Turan on piano. He is a Joan C. Edwards Distinguished Visiting Professor at Marshall and currently teaches piano and also works as the director of the School of Music at Baskent University in Ankara\, Turkey. Also performing will be Şölen Dikener on cello and Alexander Malaimare on violin. \nThey will play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday\, Sept. 3\, in Smith Recital Hall and again at noon on Thursday\, Sept. 4\, at First Presbyterian Church of Huntington\, located at 1015 Fifth Ave.\, with a slightly different program. The second performance is the first event of the School of Music’s Chamber Music Concert Series\, which continues each month during the fall and spring semesters at First Presbyterian Church. \nThe musicians will be performing Claude Debussy’s “Cello Sonata” and Ravel’s “Oiseaux Tristes & Alborada del Gracioso” for solo piano\, as well as a movement from his “Sonata for Violin and Cello” and “Piano Trio.” \n“In 2025\, many classical music organizations and educational institutions around the world are celebrating the musical genius of this French composer on the 150th anniversary of his birth\,” Dikener said. \nRavel was an integral part of Impressionism in music and the modern movement\, Dikener said. \n“He combined progressive musical techniques with the eclectic colors of exotic cultures\,” he said\, adding that Ravel’s mother came from the Basque region of Spain\, which influenced his music. \nBoth performances are free and open to all. The recitals are sponsored by the School of Music in the College of Arts and Media\, and the Chamber Music Concert Series also has sponsorship from First Presbyterian Church of Huntington\, with support from the city of Huntington.

DESCRIPTION:The Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District announces the return of The Healing Field to Spring Hill Cemetery September 8 – September 15. The Healing Field serves as a patriotic vigil to the thousands of victims of the 9/11 tragedy. \nFlags can be purchased for $35 at Spring Hill Cemetery and the proceeds will benefit the Spring Hill Cemetery Memorial Bell Tower Fund. Previously posted flags held by the owner can be re-posted for $15 and retrieved on September 15. \nPatriot Day is an annual observance on September 11 to honor the memory of the nearly 3\,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11\, 2001. \nThis year’s Patriot Day Ceremony at Spring Hill Cemetery will include local officials\, First Responders\, Veterans of the U.S. Military\, Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District Commissioners\, and patriotic music. This Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday\, September 11\, 2025\, at 6:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery. Light refreshments will be provided following the ceremony. \nFriday\, September 12th- Sunday September 14th will be set aside as Days of Reflection before the Healing Field is taken down on Monday\, September 15th. It’s time to journey through moviedom’s only begotten stepchild – Musical Comedy\, through the lens of the highs and lows revolving around a singular figure – The Song and Dance Man.\nInherited from Broadway\, perfected on screen? Watch the logic and reason of stagebound physics go completely out the window with the advent of Movie Magic.\nTo start us off\, we watch Busby Berkeley’s “Footlight Parade” (1933) starring absolute powerhouse Song and Dance Man James Cagney in his early prime as he saves Broadway with lightning fast thinking\, infinite creativity\, and energy levels sufficient to work a 500 hour work week. Be amazed\, let a little steam out from underneath your collar\, and witness expressionistic opulence from almost a century past.\nNext up\, an all too real\, all too meta portrait of the crushing nature of a life dedicated to 20th century entertainment. It’s hat and cane choreography progenitor Bob Fosse’s “All That Jazz”! With Bob himself at the director’s seat\, watch as a man deals with\, predicts\, creates? His own fate. Womanizer\, alcoholic\, Bob’s life is one long hungover dress rehearsal as years of keeping the world on the edge of its seat catches up to one of the men who taught Broadway how to dance.
