DESCRIPTION:Join us as we continue work to restore the historic Bethel Memorial Park Cemetery in Huntington\, WV. We’re excited to be returning to Bethel again for our third year and we hope you will join us! Please RSVP and share with your friends.\n About Bethel Memorial Park CemeteryFounded in 1927\, Bethel Memorial Park Cemetery served as the primary burial ground for Huntington’s Black community during an era of segregation\, providing a dignified resting place for community leaders\, veterans\, and families. The site remained active until 1974. Among the approximately 800 individuals interred\, around 60 are military veterans who served in the Spanish American War\, World War I\, World War II\, and the Korean War. In recent decades\, the cemetery has experienced neglect and overgrowth\, with many grave markers in disrepair. Continued community support is essential to preserve this site for future generations.\nThanks to the efforts of many volunteers in the past few years\, Bethel Memorial Park was accepted in April to the National Register of Historic Places. SUMMARY:2nd Annual Bethel Cemetery Restoration & Veterans Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, November 9th\, as we work to restore the historic Bethel Memorial Park Cemetery in Huntington\, WV\, a significant burial site for the city’s Black community from 1927 to 1974. After years of neglect\, the Mountwest Principles of Marketing class\, in collaboration with the Bethel Preservation Society\, is leading efforts to raise awareness and preserve this important part of our local history. This year\, for Veterans Day\, we’re hosting our second annual cemetery restoration event\, along with a formal ceremony to honor the veterans buried at Bethel.\n\nYou do not need to participate in the morning cleanup to attend the ceremony at noon; and this event is open to everyone. We are honored to have several guest speakers\, including Dr. Cicero M. Fain III\, Assistant Provost of Inclusive Excellence at Marshall University\, Dr. Josh Baker\, President of Mountwest CTC\, and Teresa Johnson\, Huntington City Councilwoman\, among others.\nDuring the cemetery restoration and cleanup from 10 AM to 12 PM\, we will clean headstones\, remove brush and trim weeds\, and reset veteran markers that are sinking or leaning. We will also honor each veteran buried at Bethel by placing an American flag at their grave. Students who participate can earn community service hours.\nWhat to Bring & Wear:• Wear fall-appropriate layers and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Closed-toe shoes are essential. Gloves are recommended.• If possible\, bring shovels\, rakes\, or weed eaters for the cleanup. We will have tools and supplies available on-site as well.• Refreshments and snacks will be available for all attendees.This is a rain or shine event\, and even an hour or two of your time can make a big difference. We encourage students\, families\, friends\, and community members to join us.\nPARKING: Please do NOT park inside the cemetery\, especially after 11:30. It’s recommended that if you’re attending the cemetery grounds cleaning\, to park close by with street parking. You can park along Perry Avenue and Bethel Road but be sure not to block any driveways. It a short walk into the cemetery.\nIf you’re attending the ceremony at noon\, please use the Crossroads Baptist Church parking lot.\nWe will be operating a 16-person passenger van between the Crossroads Baptist Church parking lot and the Bethel cemetery. You can park in the church parking lot between 11:30 – Noon and the passenger van will shuttle you in and out of the cemetery. It’s also close enough to walk over on foot\, but be cautious when crossing Norwood Road\, as cars turning from Norway Avenue do not have to stop and often drive quickly.\nFor questions or additional information\, contact Josh Keck at keck11@mctc.edu or call 304-654-0075.

SUMMARY:Bethel Memorial Park Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:On this Veteran’s Day\, we invite you to join us for a community service project at Bethel Memorial Park Cemetery.\n\nThe purpose of this project is to shed light on Bethel Memorial Park Cemetery\, an historical resting place that served Huntington’s Black community from 1927 to 1974. Unfortunately\, it has been left neglected for the past half-century. In recent years\, various community partners have joined hands in an effort to restore honor and reverence to Bethel Memorial Park.\n\nIn honor of the veterans resting within\, we are planning to clean the cemetery grounds\, meticulously locate and identify all veteran grave markers\, place American flags in front of these markers\, and\, where possible\, clean and restore headstones. This endeavor is a tribute to the rich history\, a call to raise awareness\, and an act of respect for the memory of those who served our nation.\nThis project is organized by our MK130 Principles of Marketing class. To gain a deeper understanding of Bethel Memorial Park’s background and significance\, we encourage you to watch and share the short documentary that this class produced to support this project https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuVBtEknOGA.\nProjects include Grounds Cleanup; Veteran Marker Identification; Flag Placement.\n\nWith the help of research by the Westmoreland NSDAR\, we have identified 63 veterans who rest at Bethel. We estimate that 35-40 have headstones. Many are in unmarked graves. To ensure each veteran is recognized\, a tag with their name and biography will be attached to each flagpole. For those veterans we cannot locate a headstone for\, a flag will be placed along the entrance of Bethel.\nFlags will remain up until Tuesday morning so that the members of the community can visit anytime over Veteran’s Day weekend. The gates to Bethel will be open from 8am to 8pm from Saturday to Monday. To our knowledge\, this is the first time Bethel will be open to the public in nearly 50 years.\nThis event is Rain or Shine. You don’t need to spend the entire day – even an hour or two can help. We encourage students\, friends\, family\, and colleagues to attend and lend a hand or visit over the weekend to pay respects.\nRefreshments and lunch will be available for all attendees. Make sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and closed-toes shoes. Shovels\, spades\, weed eaters\, and small garden tools are welcome.
