SUMMARY:Senses - An Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Can machines be taught to see\, hear\, speak? What is lost? What might be found? These questions coil in the roots of this exhibition by artists Christiana Caro and Kimberly Lyle. Caro was employed by Google to teach an intelligent camera about seeing. Lyle is reimagining old technology designed to gather auditory sensory data and question the logic within these systems. Both reflect on the interface of the body with technology to imagine forms that might allow us to uncover other ways of knowing. \nThe reception will be held Thursday\, October 13 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. \nBIRKE ART GALLERY\nLocated in Smith Hall on the corner of\nHal Greer Boulevard and Third Avenue\nHuntington\, WV 25755 | 304-696-4312\nFor gallery hours call or visit the website: marshall.edu/art-galleries \nAll events are free and open to the public

SUMMARY:Marshall University’s 36th Annual Juried Student Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University’s 36th Annual Juried Student Exhibition will be on view March 8-31 in the Birke Art Gallery\, located in Smith Hall on the Huntington campus. The exhibit features students’ best artworks from throughout the past two years\, as selected by an outside juror. \n“For students in the School of Art and Design\, (the Annual Juried Student Exhibition) is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year\,” Gallery Director Jamie Platt said. “This show is a unique opportunity for student artists. Testing their artwork in an arena of their peers outside of an assignment is something many of these students have not had a chance to do yet. It is exciting to watch them practicing the skill of public presentation that will be a big part of their professional lives.” \nEight of the artworks will be awarded cash prizes totaling $3\,000. This year’s juror is artist and educator Danielle Riede\, who grew up in the United States and Iceland\, received her Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University and studied with Daniel Buren at the Kunstakademie Duesseldorf. \nRiede’s international exhibition record includes galleries and museums in Mexico City\, Athens\, Berlin\, New York\, and many other cities. Riede is the recipient of numerous awards\, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship\, the Virginia Commission for the Arts Fellowship in Sculpture and a New Frontiers Grant from Indiana University. She is currently the Randolph H. Deer Professor of Painting at Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI (Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis). \nThe public is invited to a reception from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday\, March 23. Awards will be announced at 5:30 p.m. The awards presentation will be simulcast to Instagram @marshalluartanddesign. \nThe Birke Art Gallery is open to the public. For gallery hours\, please call 304-696-4312 or visit the website. https://www.marshall.edu/art-galleries/ \nAll events are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Shifting Sediments - Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:Shifting Sediments opens in the Birke Art Gallery in Smith Hall Aug. 30 and remains on view through Sept. 30. Shifting Sediments juxtaposes the artworks of Caroline Hatfield\, Andrew Needle and Kathleen Thum\, all of whom focus on the material qualities of the earth beneath our feet. \nHatfield has constructed a river of glistening coal slag that empties into the center of the gallery\, illuminated by the soft orange glow of an industrial beacon light. Nearby on surrounding walls\, Thum’s skillfully rendered drawings of coal make a powerful connection to the river of slag\, highlighting coal’s visual/material qualities amongst the myriad social/economic/political ones. Rounding out the exhibition\, Needle’s close-up paintings illuminate the colors and textures of natural forms as transformed by time and exposure to the elements. \nVisitors to this exhibition are invited into a conversation about time\, transformation\, and meaning in relation to the land. The public is invited to a closing reception at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday\, Sept. 29. \nAll School of Art and Design events are free and open to the public. For more information and to find out about the gallery hours\, navigate to the website https://www.marshall.edu/art-galleries/ or call the School of Art and Design at 304-696-7299. \nDue to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic\, all events are subject to change and visitors should call the School of Art and Design or check the website for up-to-date information.
