The weekend will include classes and experiences with glass\, exciting demonstrations from Blenko’s Guest Artists and Designers\, a vintage sale\, food trucks\, and a Saturday night concert from Huntington’s Grown Ass Folks.\n\nBlenko fans and collectors can enjoy a number of classes and experiences\, all available for purchase at noon Eastern\, Monday\, March 11th on the company website (http://www.blenko.com). The company will be offering hands-on experiences like Blow-Your-Own 384 Water Bottles\, as well as guided classes and experiences like Nightlight\, Kaleidoscope\, Dalle de Verre and Etching experiences. On Friday and Saturday\, we are also offering a Design-Your-Own experience\, where customers can choose the colors and styles of a piece made by an artist in front of their eyes.\n\nThe Festival of Glass was founded to preserve\, celebrate\, and communicate the rich glass heritage of West Virginia\, once home to more than four hundred glass factories. Surviving and thriving\, Blenko reproduces a historical piece each year to remark on and celebrate 20th century glass. This year\, Blenko is reproducing a design from one of its own cherished designers – Don Shepherd – from his glass studio and practice before joining Blenko. The DAS Glass America ‘Moonscape’ Vase is a 14-inch tall freeform\, triangular vase made with a unique\, three-piece open-air mould. The surface of the glass picks up Shepherd’s hand-sculpted and -crafted moon craters and ridges: it is a stunning piece of contemporary glass design and featured in Hay and Ice Blue.\n\nThe centerpiece of the Festival’s wares is certainly the Lift Off Decanter. Invoking classic midcentury motifs\, the Crystal decanter with a straight optic calls to mind the lift off cloud from the cheekily nostalgic Rocket stopper\, available in two colorways\, Ruby or Cobalt. The rocket decanter stopper is modeled on the V2 rocket and midcentury space age designs as much as by the toys that inspired a generation to dream of going into space.\nThe Festival will feature the debut fundraising event for the newly incorporated non-profit Blenko Glass Foundation\, whose purpose is to preserve and fortify West Virginia’s storied glassmaking heritage through conservation\, education\, and active community engagement. The Foundation will be hosting a Meet The Designers Evening\, with food and drink and a chance to talk to Blenko designers past and present. Blenko will be selling a new edition of designer emeritus Matt Carter’s 9711 Vase for exclusive purchase during the event weekend\, and guests will get a chance to meet him and other Blenko artists at this ticketed event.\n\nBlenko President John Blenko will be on hand for the Festival weekend\, available to sign purchased glass at the Visitor Center\, and meet with collectors and visitors. SUMMARY:Blenko's 2023 Festival of Glass
DESCRIPTION:Blenko Glass Company is set to resume its popular public summer event and festival\, The Festival of Glass\, the weekend of August 4-6\, 2023. After two hiatus years\, the Milton\, WV company is excited about a full return to the Festival’s programming in 2023\, under the banner “Be There or Be Square.” The festival times will run from 9am-5pm on Friday and Saturday and 12pm-5pm on Sunday.\nThe Festival of Glass was established as a way to celebrate the lost history and heritage of American glass manufacturing and design\, and in particular\, the once-booming art glass industry in West Virginia. The long weekend event offers glassworking classes and live demonstrations of technique from local and regional artists\, auctions for speciality and one-of-a-kind pieces\, a vintage glass sale\, food trucks\, local vendors and artists\, and live music.\nIn keeping with tradition\, Blenko Glass Company has designed a specialty decanter for the Festival. “Square Peg” is a sharply angled\, square-necked decanter and flared lip with a watercolor swirl across its midsection\, topped with a blown stopper. These pieces will be limited to sale at the Visitor Center.\nContinuing a tradition of honoring other iconic glassmakers and designs\, Blenko will pay homage to Whitefriars Glass\, a midcentury British glass manufacturer with a penchant for rich colors\, wild textures\, and groovy midcentury geometries. Blenko will be offering a limited edition piece inspired by trailblazing designer Geoffrey Baxter\, an organically geometric\, pinched flask decanter called “Square Wave\,” available in two colors.\nBlenko will also be releasing a commemorative event suncatcher in Topaz and t-shirts with the 2023 festival art will be available online and at the Visitor Center.\nAdditionally\, Blenko will be selling a limited edition poster for the event designed by Charleston\, WV’s own Basecamp Printing. This edition of 100 will sell out fast at $20\, and only available in the Visitor Center during the weekend of August 4-6th while supplies last. No phone orders will be accepted for this poster or Limited Edition Festival pieces! The Visitor Center will also feature square-shaped and groovy pieces from Blenko’s swinging sixties vault\, as well as the more recent Block vases and lamps.\nFriday\, August 4th\, will offer a full roster of experiences\, where visitors can work alongside our skilled craftsmen to blow their own iconic 384 water bottles in large or miniature versions\, make windchimes and nightlights\, or garden mosaic stepping stones. Other opportunities such as Dalle de Verre art and “Design Your Own” experiences will also be available.\nBlenko’s social media will be live much of the day for those unable to attend\, featuring glassworking demonstrations from both Blenko and visiting artists. Pieces blown during these demonstrations will be available for auction at a Saturday evening event benefiting the launch of Blenko Glass Company’s nonprofit foundation.\nClass tickets will be available Wednesday\, July 5th on Blenko’s website.\nAll glass produced during workshops and classes will be shipped to participants and will NOT be available for local pickup.\nMany of the public events are concentrated on the main festival day\, Saturday\, August 5th\, when Blenko’s factory campus will be opened to the public for a day full of classes\, demonstrations\, food\, drink\, and music. Local artisans\, vendors\, and food trucks will be set up on the factory campus. Glassblowing demonstrations can be watched from the Observation Deck of the factory floor\, as well as at sites around the factory campus\, thanks to visiting artists from Mobile Glassblowing Studios of Georgia and earth mould blowing by Blenko’s own Alex Burdette. We encourage visitors to bring blankets or chairs to picnic and listen to live music and watch live glassblowing.\nThe Visitor Center will feature a wide selection of current line items and one of a kind pieces\, including glass by Blenko’s weekend demonstrator James Woodson. A vintage Blenko Glass sale will be held on Saturday morning at the neighboring VFW Hall on Bill Blenko Drive\, organized by Lion’s Head Relics of Virginia.\nBlenko Glass Company President John W. Blenko will be on hand at the Visitor Center on Saturday and Sunday\, August 5-6\, 2023\, to sign the special Festival of Glass pieces and other purchases from our Visitor Center gift shop.

Unfortunately\, due to the ongoing COVID situation it is still not feasible for us to offer glassblowing classes this year. \nDespite the setback\, we have several fun things planned! \nTo celebrate this year\, beginning on Friday\, August 6\, we will introduce 2 Special Edition pieces that have been specifically designed for the festival. We will also offer a 15% off sale on most items in our Visitor Center Gift Shop on Friday\, August 6 through Sunday\, August 8 and as a way to virtually share the art of glassblowing we will broadcast a live video on our Facebook page on Friday\, August 6 around 9:30am EST showing our hot shops crafting this year’s Festival of Glass pieces. \nOur desire is to once again celebrate glass with you without putting you or our staff at risk. DESCRIPTION:Submit your entries for the Blenko Glass 5th Annual Water Bottle Art Contest! \nPhoto submissions must be sent to art@blenko.com with the subject line ‘2021 Water Bottle Art Contest Entry’. Submissions must be received by January 15\, 2021 to be considered. \nWe are hosting a small art contest with the sole award being one first place entry! That winning entry earns one piece of Blenko Glass and the winning piece will be used as a postcard showing proper artist credit with copies provided to the winning artist and $50 cash. \nThe rules are simple- the submission must be an original work. Photo\, sculpture\, painting\, any VISUAL art showing creative use or interpretation of our 80 plus year old design. Entries should be photos sent digitally but creativity will drive the winning entry. The subject matter must include Blenko’s iconic 384 Water Bottle as a part of the work in some recognizable way. \nPhoto submissions must be sent to art@blenko.com with the subject line ‘2021 Water Bottle Art Contest Entry’. Submissions must be received by January 15\, 2021 to be considered. Note please only three (3) entries per person max.
