SUMMARY:HMA Trail Celebration and Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Tuesday\, November 4\, 2025\, at 5 p.m. when the Huntington Museum of Art dedicates the recently completed improvement project to its nature trail system. The public is invited to attend the outdoor ceremony. In case of inclement weather\, the program will move inside to HMA’s Virginia Van Zandt Great Hall. \nThe improvement project titled “This Land is Your Land” included extending the Teubert Foundation Sensory Trail at HMA\, which received a $143\,550 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services in August 2021. The grant was matched with a gift of $145\,000 from Brad and Alys Smith’s Wing 2 Wing Foundation in addition to a $15\,000 grant from The Teubert Foundation. \n“Anyone who has visited the Huntington Museum of Art in the past year or so has seen the work taking place on our Teubert Foundation Sensory Trail\, which offers those using wheelchairs or walkers and others a chance to enjoy a visit to the woods\,” said HMA Executive Director Elizabeth “Liz” Simmons. “Now\, that the project is complete\, we want to encourage members of the public to enjoy the improvements to the trail system.” \nGoals of the “This Land is Your Land” project included for HMA to expand and enhance its current nature trail system and provide opportunities for families and individuals to interact with and learn about nature. \n“HMA has a three-prong mission of supporting art\, education and nature\,” Simmons said. “This improvement to the nature trail system on HMA’s more than 50 acres certainly addresses our mission to foster appreciation of nature but also includes art and education elements through the beautiful and informative signage on the trails featuring the work of local artist Rosalie Haizlett.” \nThe Huntington Museum of Art is grateful to the IMLS\, The Teubert Foundation\, and the Wing 2 Wing Foundation for understanding the importance of the project\, Simmons said. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (grant number MA-249209-OMS-21). For more information on the Huntington Museum of Art\, visit hmoa.org or call (304) 529-2701. The Huntington Museum of Art is fully accessible

SUMMARY:“Seeds of Soul Food” Tasting Tour at HMA
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art will offer a “Seeds of Soul Food” tasting tour of the C. Fred Edwards Conservatory on Tuesday\, Oct. 28\, 2025\, from 6 to 8 p.m. as part of its 4th Tuesday Tour Series. Admission to this event is free.\nThis program is presented in conjunction with the exhibit titled “Joyful Spirits: Haitian Art from The Winslow Anderson Collection\,” which continues on view at HMA through Feb. 8\, 2026.\nDuring the tour\, guests will be able to sample foods that are produced by plants that are culturally important to Haiti and represented in the C. Fred Edwards Conservatory. Tasting Tour Stations for this event will include sugar cane candy\, fried plantain\, akra fritters\, mango\, and roselle. The event includes catered food samples from Soul Food Café and Nomada Bakery.\n“Our ‘Seeds of Soul Food’ theme was inspired by the colorful works on view in ‘Joyful Spirits’ and invites visitors to sample some of the tropical flavors found in Afro-Caribbean cuisine\,” said HMA Conservatory Director Josh Hamrick. “The title ‘Seeds of Soul Food’ references the seeds some enslaved people braided into their hair as an act of hope and resistance before the notorious Middle Passage across the Atlantic. The comfort of soul food was born out of hope and joy in the face of great atrocity. We invite you to take in ‘Joyful Spirits’ where community and resilience are common themes of the displayed works\, enjoy tasty bites\, and celebrate what community means to you.”\nThe event will include a free children’s art activity in the Education Gallery.

SUMMARY:Huntington Museum of Art Docent Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art is offering a free informational Docent Open House on Tuesday\, Sept. 2\, 2025\, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for those who are interested in becoming volunteer art and nature tour guides. Light refreshments will be served.\n\n“Docents are volunteers who share their appreciation for art and nature with visitors of all ages at the Huntington Museum of Art\, which has a nature trail system on its 52 acres\,” said HMA Director of Education Cindy Dearborn. “If giving tours of our exhibits or nature trails sounds like something that appeals to you\, then come to Docent Open House and learn more about being a volunteer docent. No previous experience in giving tours is necessary and all docents are thoroughly trained and supported by HMA staff members.”\n\nDocents gather on Monday mornings at the Huntington Museum of Art during the fall and spring for informal art training sessions with the staff members of HMA’s Education Department. “The Huntington Museum of Art is able to provide the number of tours that we do because of our docents\,” Dearborn said. “Many of our volunteers have formed lasting friendships as part of our docent program. Being part of our docent program is very rewarding when you see students and adults enjoying their visits to the Huntington Museum of Art.”\n\nFor questions about the docent program or other education programs at HMA\, call Dearborn at (304) 529-2701 or send her an email at cdearborn@hmoa.org.

SUMMARY:HMA to Present Joyful Spirits: Haitian Art from The Winslow Anderson Collection
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington Museum of Art will present the exhibit titled Joyful Spirits: Haitian Art from The Winslow Anderson Collection from Aug. 16 through Feb. 8\, 2026. The Opening Reception for this exhibit will take place at HMA on Aug. 26\, 2025\, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission to this 4th Tuesday Tour Series event is free.\n\nArtists with work featured in the exhibit include Gabriel Alix\, Montas Antoine\, Rigaud Benoit\, Préfète Duffaut\, and Hector Hyppolite\, among others.\n\nWinslow Anderson was a longtime supporter of the Huntington Museum of Art and the first full-time glass designer at Blenko Glass Company in Milton\, West Virginia.\n\n“Winslow Anderson was moved by the colorful\, joyous\, and expressive nature of Haitian art\, and from 1948 until about 1989\, he made annual trips to the Haitian capital city of Port-au-Prince\,” said HMA Curator John Farley. “In Port-au-Prince\, Winslow developed a lifelong friendship with DeWitt Peters\, who had helped establish Le Centre d’Art\, which is now among the oldest surviving cultural institutions in the Caribbean.”\n\nAnderson amassed an impressive collection of Haitian art that he bequeathed to the Huntington Museum of Art. “Winslow was a discerning collector. During these trips\, he purchased many Haitian artworks\, considering each an inspiration to his own creative spirit. Upon his passing in 2007\, the Museum received a bequest of 160 works of Haitian art and a generous endowment that primarily supports the expansion and conservation of this important Haitian art collection\,” Farley said.\n\nThis exhibit is presented with support from The Isabelle Gwynn and Robert Daine Exhibition Endowment.\n\nThis program is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
