DESCRIPTION:This month’s Writers Can Read series will feature two local writers – WV author Kathy Manley\, and artist and author Bonnie Proudfoot. The event is free and open to the public and will take place on Monday\, February 17 at 7 P.M. at The Inner Geek bookshop located at Pullman Square in downtown Huntington. \nKatherine Manley lives in southern West Virginia and has been an educator in Logan County schools for over 35 years. She’s the author of Don’t Tell’em You’re Cold: a Memoir of Poverty and Resilience and is a fellow of the 1995 West Virginia Writing Project. Her writing has been featured in Hamilton Stone Review\, Traditions: A Journal of West Virginia Folk Culture and Educational Awareness\, The Guyandot Observer\, and Fearless: Women’s Journeys to Self-Empowerment. \nBonnie Proudfoot moved to the Appalachian region in 1979 and has lived here since\, teaching for many years at Hocking College in Nelsonville\, Ohio. She is a fiction writer\, a poet\, and a glass artist. Goshen Road is her first novel. Set in the late 1960s through the early 1990s\, it tells the story of a West Virginia working-class family. \nThe “Writers Can Read” open mic night reading series takes place on the third Monday of each month (all year) from 7:00-8:30 at The Inner Geek at Pullman Square in Huntington\, West Virginia. The event features two award-winning\, published authors that serve as “featured readers” to begin the event each month. Previous featured readers have included: Marc Harshman\, Denise Giardina\, Crystal Wilkinson\, Jonathan Corcoran\, Doug Van Gundy\, Robert Gipe\, Nick White\, and others. DESCRIPTION:This Monday\, January 20 at 7 P.M\, The Inner Geek bookstore in Huntington\, WV will host the monthly Writers Can Read event. This month’s event features local author Matthew Wolfe and mystery novelist Robin Yocum reading selections from their work\, as well as an open mic session for anyone who would like to share their prose or poetry with the audience. \nMatthew Wolfe’s writing has appeared in Newsweek\, Writer’s Digest\, Yellow Medicine Review\, Animus\, Motif\, and The Chaucer Review\, to name a few. He was the recipient of the 2005 West Virginia Artist Fellowship for his memoir writing. That project resulted in his 2017 book\, The Way It Was. Wolfe\, a life-long Gemini\, has also published his screenplay\, HeartBeat\, a script based on his 2001 novel of the same name. His most recent books include Ms. Scrooge\, a 21st century retelling of A Christmas Carol\, and Gentle Snow\, a collection of short stories about mystics and mystical experiences. \nRobin Yocum\, whose latest novel is A Perfect Shot\, is a native of Brilliant\, Ohio\, a small town near Steubenville\, Ohio. His other mystery novels include Insured for Murder\, Dead before Deadline\, The Essay\, Favorite Sons\, A Brilliant Death\, and A Welcome Murder. In 2017\, he was nominated for the Mystery Writers of America’s Edgar Award for A Brilliant Death. Owner of Yocum Communications\, a public relations and marketing firm\, Robin was also a crime and investigative reporter with the Columbus Dispatch from 1980-1991 and has won more than thirty local\, state\, and national journalism awards in categories ranging from investigative reporting to feature writing. \nThe “Writers Can Read” open mic night reading series takes place on the third Monday of each month (all year) from 7:00-8:30 at The Inner Geek at Pullman Square in Huntington\, West Virginia. DESCRIPTION:This month’s Writers Can Read series will feature two Appalachian writers – novelist Jess Montgomery and poet Savannah Sipple. The event is free and open to the public and will take place on Monday\, November 18 at 7 P.M. at The Inner Geek bookshop located at Pullman Square in downtown Huntington. \nJess Montgomery is the author of the Kinship Historical Mysteries. Under her given name\, she is a newspaper columnist\, focusing on the literary life\, authors and events of her native Dayton\, Ohio for the Dayton Daily News. Her first novel in the Kinship Historical Mystery series garnered awards even before publication: Montgomery County (Ohio) Arts & Cultural District (MCAD) Artist Opportunity Grant (2018); Individual Excellence Award (2016) in Literary Arts from Ohio Arts Council; John E. Nance Writer in Residence at Thurber House (Columbus\, Ohio) in 2014. Her first novel\, The Widows\, is now available. Her second novel\, The Hollows\, will be released soon. \nSavannah Sipple is the author of WWJD & Other Poems (Sibling Rivalry Press\, 2019)\, which explores what it is to be a queer woman in Appalachia and is rooted in its culture and in her body. With a beer-drinking Jesus as her wingman\, she navigates this difficult terrain of stereotype\, conservative Evangelicalism\, and\, perhaps most\, shame. A writer from east Kentucky\, her writing has recently been published in Southern Cultures\, Split This Rock\, Salon\, Appalachian Heritage\, Waxwing\, and other places. Savannah is an Assistant Professor of English at Bluegrass Community and Technical College and a mentor in the low residency MFA program at West Virginia Wesleyan College. \nThe “Writers Can Read” open mic night reading series takes place on the third Monday of each month (all year) from 7:00-8:30 at The Inner Geek at Pullman Square in Huntington\, West Virginia. He graduated from Vanderbilt University Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature. He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He has been a practicing gastroenterologist in north Texas since 1991. \nHere’s a brief description of his newly released novel\, In The End: “…a thriller that opens along the lines of Robin Cook; but with more social and psychological issues\, which are explored in greater\, more satisfying detail. The event is free and open to the public.\nSydnee McElroy has a BS in biology (2005) and an MD (2009) from Marshall University. She currently is a practicing licensed family physician and an assistant professor of medical education with Marshall.\nJustin McElroy is a 15-year journalism veteran with two awards from the Ohio Associated Press for business writing. He has served as the managing editor of AOL’s Joystiq and Vox Media’s Polygon (of which he’s also a founder).

Her second short story collection\, Me and My Daddy Listen to Bob Marley\, was published by Counterpoint Press in February 2015.\nHer first novel\, Strange As This Weather Has Been (Counterpoint 2007)\, features a southern West Virginia family devastated by mountaintop removal mining. Based on interviews and real events\, the novel was one of Kirkus Review’s Top Ten Fiction Books of 2007\, won the 2007 Weatherford Award\, and was a finalist for the 2008 Orion Book Award.\nMatthew Ferrence lives and teaches in Northwestern Pennsylvania\, at the confluence of Appalachia and the Rust Belt. He is the author of the book All-American Redneck: Variations on an Icon\, from James Fenimore Cooper to the Dixie Chicks\, which was published by the University of Tennessee Press in 2014 and was a. Finalist for the Weatherford Award. He is also the author of the latest book Appalachia North\, which came about after a the diagnosis of a brain tumor\, setting Ferrence on a journey that is part memoir\, part exploration of geology and place.
