SUMMARY:MU Winter Jazz Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University School of Music will present the 56th MU Winter Jazz Festival Wednesday through Friday\, Feb.26-28\, at Smith Recital Hall. The festival is among the longest-running collegiate jazz festivals in the country and features performances by 20 different ensembles from middle school to professional groups. All concerts are free and open to all. \nA hallmark of the annual festival is the featured guest artist. This year’s featured guest artist is David Smith\, a sought-after trumpet player based in New York City who has been recognized as a 2025 Joan C. Edwards Distinguished Professor in the Arts. Smith has released three albums featuring his original compositions and has appeared on the GRAMMY Award-winning albums Bianca Reimagined from the Dan Pugach Big Band (2025) and Four Questions from Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (2019). \nSmith has also performed and recorded with Harry Connick Jr.\, Tom Jones\, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and The Who. SUMMARY:Brass Band of the TriState Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Brass Band of the TriState will present a concert\, “World Tour\,” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday\, Oct. 22\, in Smith Recital Hall on Marshall’s campus. The concert will feature music from Hungary\, Bohemia\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Australia and New Zealand. \nThe Brass Band of the TriState is a British-style brass band made up of community members\, Marshall students\, and alumni and directed by Dr. Michael Stroeher\, professor of low brass at Marshall. The British brass band is a tradition extending back almost 200 years\, and the Brass Band of the TriState is the only such ensemble in West Virginia\, Stroeher said. \n“At this concert\, the audience will hear music from many cultures\, including Italian Renaissance Dances\, a Hungarian march\, and a piece based on a Maori folktale from New Zealand\,” Stroeher said. “It’s always great to open our ears to other people’s music. I think it helps us understand them more.” \nThe concert is free and open to all.

DESCRIPTION:. – The Marshall University School of Music presents the 55th MU Winter Jazz Festival Feb. 14-16 at Smith Recital Hall. The Marshall Winter Jazz Festival is among the longest-running collegiate jazz festivals in the country and features numerous free performances throughout the festival. This year’s featured guest artist is Canadian pianist and composer Earl MacDonald\, a Joan C. Edwards Distinguished Professor in the Arts. MacDonald has collaborated with such jazz luminaries as Steve Houghton\, Ingrid Jensen\, Dianne Schuur and Maynard Ferguson. SUMMARY:Enchanted Melodies of Korean Songs
DESCRIPTION:Marshall University’s School of Music will present “Enchanted Melodies of Korean Songs\,” a free concert which is open to the public\, featuring Korean art songs performed by a lineup of accomplished artists. It will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday\, Jan. 19\, in Smith Recital Hall. \nPerformers include Alexander Wook Lee\, tenor and associate professor of voice and opera director at Marshall\, and Elizabeth Reed Smith\, violinist and professor at Marshall\, along with Sun-Joo Oh\, a soprano and professor of voice at East Tennessee State University; Dr. Jiyeon Lee\, a pianist from Seoul\, South Korea\, a faculty member at John A. Logan College and at Southern Illinois University Carbondale ; and Dr. Anthony Gray\, collaborative pianist who is assistant professor of Practice at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. \n“This free\, public event promises an evening of traditional and contemporary Korean art songs\, beautifully rendered by a lineup of esteemed artists\,” Lee said. “We’ll take you on a journey through the heart of Korean music\, highlighting its rich tradition and modern evolutions. The program includes works by composers like Isang Yun\, Won-joo Lee\, Jisoo Lee\, Hyun Kook\, and Seungki Hong\, ensuring a diverse and enchanting musical experience.” \nAll are welcome. A reception will follow\, and the event is free and open to all. \n“This concert is an exciting\, heartfelt and moving vocal presentation of art songs and spirituals by African American composers\,” said Waugh\, an assistant professor of voice at Marshall. “While these works are sometimes overlooked within the canon\, they speak to audiences across the American landscape.” \nWashington also will present a vocal master class at 2 p.m. Tuesday\, March 28\, in Smith Recital Hall and will lead an artist talk at 6 p.m. Thursday\, March 30\, in Smith Recital Hall.

DESCRIPTION:The Pangean mountains are an extensive mountain range spanning the Scottish Highlands to the Appalachian Mountains. Once\, these mountains were one landmass (Pangean mountain)\, now they are divided and located on different continents.\nIn this recital\, Dr. Alexander Lee\, Dr. Henning Vauth\, and Dr. Júlio Alves\, will perform music from different regions. The program will include Benjamin Britten’s Folksong arrangements (Scottish\, Ireland\, and England)\, Kenneth Frazelle’s Appalachian Folksong arrangements\, Johannes Brahms’s Folksong arrangements\, Heitor Villa-Lobos’s art songs\, and Moses Hogan’s Spiritual arrangements.\nThis program came from Dr. Lee’s desire to express our need for unity through troubling times. Our world is divided politically\, ideologically\, religiously\, racially\, and ethnically. However\, like all continents and lands were once one\, it is essential to remember the root of all people and countries are identical.\nIt is Alexander Lee’s desire that this program reminds audiences that although everything seems divided\, we all share the same origin and root. SUMMARY:Marshall University Winter Jazz Fest
DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University Winter Jazz Festival is one of the oldest collegiate jazz festivals in North America. Founded in 1969 by Professor J.D. Folsom\, the festival is held in February of each year and features performances by various MU Jazz Ensembles\, the regions’ finest middle school and high school jazz bands\, along with clinics and performances by world-renown jazz artists and educators\, as well as members of the MU jazz faculty. High school & middle school jazz ensembles/combos of any size are invited to participate. \nA hallmark of the Winter Jazz Festival is the appearance of a guest artist who performs with Marshall University jazz ensemble members. This year’s guest artist is saxophonist Pete Mills. Mills’ group\, the Pete Mills B3 4tet\, is the featured ensemble during the Friday\, Feb. 11\, concert in Smith Recital Hall\, which kicks off at 6 p.m. Mills will perform again with MU Jazz Ensemble I at 6 p.m. Saturday\, Feb. 12\, also in Smith Recital Hall. \nThe festival also features performances by the Jewel City Jazz Orchestra\, MU Jazz Combo I\, and regional high school and middle school jazz ensembles who will perform throughout the day on Feb. 11-12. \nSponsored by the School of Music in the College of Arts and Media\, the festival performances are free and open to all. DESCRIPTION:The Marshall University School of Music presents Central City New Music Series #5 \nKUZU\n(brilliant sax-guitar-drums trio from Chicago/Asheville)\n(Dave Rempis / Tashi Dorji / Tyler Damon)\nhttps://www.daverempis.com/kuzu\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPAAue0L3Oo \nKUZU is a hard-charging but patient trio that came together in the fall of 2017\, after saxophonist Dave Rempis\, a stalwart of the Chicago improvised music scene\, worked with both Tashi Dorji (guitar) and Tyler Damon (drums) individually as part of a lengthy solo tour of the U.S. that he undertook in the spring of that year.  Dorji and Damon’s work as a guitar/percussion duo has become well-known\, a highly refined and specific language developed through relentless touring and recording over the last few years\, with a sound that straddles improvised music\, rock\, and any number of as-yet-undefined territories.  These two provide an incredibly fresh take on the possibilities inherent to spontaneous composition.  Superimposing Rempis into this mix was a logical next step after the relationships they’d forged individually.  The trio’s debut record Hiljaisuus (“silence” in Finnish…) was released on LP by the well-known label Astral Spirits in summer 2018\, and on cd by Aerophonic Records in January 2019. The band plans two new releases in early 2020 on the same labels\, using material recorded live on tour in October 2018. They also plan tours of the US and Europe in 2020. \nMusically\, these three create a highly focused pallet of sounds. At times\, spacious gestures carve up the canvas with the austerity of a calligrapher\, while at others those sparse gestures build into an unstoppable tsunami of energy. Those waves are never impulsive or impetuous though\, they ebb and flow logically and patiently out of simple and clearly defined sources. Rempis’ penchant for pentatonic melodies and rough and tumble timbres combines seamlessly with Dorji’s thick\, raw sound and singular approach to intonation\, buttressed by Damon’s rapid-fire yet powerful stickwork\, to produce a music that’s exquisitely detailed at any one point in time\, yet carries the narrative arc of their often set-length explorations without ever losing its coordinates. In this music you can hear the many hours together in a van roaming the hills of Tennessee and Pennsylvania\, the plains of Texas and Illinois\, and the forests of North Carolina and New England\, trading playlists ranging from jazz icons like Pharaoh Sanders and Yusef Lateef to Scandinavian black metal bands like Craft and Darkthrone. While this isn’t a new thing in creative music – broad ears are a trademark of musicians in this world – what makes the pairing so unique is the truly organic way in which they string these influences together into a coherent sound. This isn’t a Frankenstein pastiche of bits and pieces held together with duct tape and glue\, and a paper-thin conception. This is an emotionally deep and sincere effort to join genuinely disparate influences arrived at only through patient toil. When we ask if Rempis is channeling Coltrane\, or a Turkish clarinet player; does Dorji sound like a Delta bluesman\, or a southeast Asian rocker from the 70’s; is that Art Blakey or John Bonham rolling out through Damon’s toms; the answer is undoubtedly all of the above. And yet\, despite the breadth of the trio’s inspirations\, their music never collapses under the weight of its aspirations\, fearlessly carving out a new corner in the broader sonic landscape. \n

DESCRIPTION:Marshall University will host a concert by the U.S. Air Force Heritage Brass at 7:30 p.m. Friday\, Oct. 25\, in Smith Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public\, with sponsorship from the Marshall University School of Music. \nThe Heritage Brass highlights the Air Force’s crisp precision as it brings the military tradition of brass to the concert stage. Musicians include 10 brass players and percussion\, who perform throughout the eastern United States. Their repertoire includes patriotic favorites\, as well as jazz standards\, distinctive arrangements and new compositions. \n“As professional airman-musicians\, Heritage Brass is committed to inspiring our American public\, communicating our Air Force Core Values\, and honoring our nation’s veterans through the power of music\,” the U.S. Air Force website says. “They are proud to represent our nation’s airmen who fly\, fight and win in air\, space and cyberspace.” \nAll are welcome. \n“We are really excited to have a musical group of this caliber come to town\,” said Dr. Michael Stroeher\, a trombonist and faculty member in the Marshall University School of Music. “They are top-level musicians\, and I can guarantee a very exciting performance.”
