Appalachian Troll Project

Something Magical is Taking Root in Huntington

Deep in the mountains and along winding rivers, folklore has always lived in Appalachia. Now that story continues as West Virginia prepares to welcome its first troll sculpture by world-renowned artist Thomas Dambo.

Millions of travelers worldwide hunt for them in forests, along waterways, and across vast natural landscapes. Soon, this global phenomenon will arrive in Huntington.

Handcrafted from discarded pallets, salvaged lumber, and natural materials, each troll has its own distinct personality, poetic riddle, and environmental message. When installed, this interactive landmark will put Huntington on the international Trollmap. Our city will join more than two dozen states in “Trolls of America” as part of Dambo’s dream of a coast-to-coast public art trail of 50+ monumental sculptures – at least one in every state – crafted from recycled materials, built with community hands, and placed in nature to spark adventure, recycling, and civic pride. Our Appalachian Troll will connect West Virginia with this global outdoor scavenger hunt, inviting residents and visitors from around the world to explore the natural beauty and vibrant spirit of our region.

We are currently scouting and planning for this mythical creation to take root within the wooded nature trails of the Huntington Museum of Art, with the final location and creative scope to be determined in collaboration with the artist himself.

Bringing this gentle giant to life will take a community-wide effort over the next 12 to 18 months. We invite local businesses, civic leaders, and families to help us lay the groundwork today.
