“River of Silence” is about Anastasia, a woman who becomes severely depressed in the early days of her motherhood. Her family becomes worried when Anastasia begins to hear voices and, this being in the 1950’s, decide that the best place for Anastasia to get help is in an asylum. Instead of a cure, a horror story unfolds behind the walls of Salinger-Whiteside as shock treatments and talk of a lobotomy occur.

The story of Anastasia, sadly immersed in a river of silence, is told through family, work friends, other patients, and asylum staff. What unfolds is the reality of mental health care for women 70 years ago and little removed from our experiences today. Consider is your sanity came under question and decisions made for you became a true existential threat to your life?
